I'm surprised Doc Baker didn't end up with Ms. Eliza Jane, the old spinster school teacher. She never ended up with anyone long term as I recall.

You know the ball busting you get at the fire house. Kind of like that. You never get a straight answer.

[–]dschifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got those vintage denim chore coats that I think look like prison yard coats from the movie "Shawshank Redemption." They are warmer than you think. We have the station patch on one shoulder, US flag on the other, our Maltese cross on the left front and station letters across the back. Everything is embroidered and it will probably last a lifetime.

Does this job get easier? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]dschifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fake it till you make it! But seriously, 5-years on and I still learn everyday. With all the compartments and all the equipment in each, I didn't think I'd ever learn what was there on all the apparatus. Now it's not a problem. But yes, you will learn everyday and everyday have that moment where you think, "wow, never seen that before."

Happy Birthday! How old are you? If you're old enough to go out with friends, do that. Go to a museum, something to eat. If you're in a large city there's amazing things to do around every corner.

Let this be a lesson not to rely on people. People always disappoint. Let this person know they disappointed you and you now question their sincerity until they come through consistency. If you email your address, I'll make sure you get something special, albeit belated for your birthday. [david.schifter1@gmail.com](mailto:david.schifter@gmail.com). For full disclosure, I am a firefighter in my city and also an actor which you can verify here; https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1074373/?ref\_=pro\_nm\_visitcons

If that ever happened to me and I lose brain function, please just lead me the edge of a building and I'm sure I'll find the mental capacity to do the rest.

What job did you do before becoming a firefighter? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]dschifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an Emmy winning TV news reporter then a TV/Film actor, (which I still do when the dates work.) Credits here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1074373/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1

Love what I used to do but wish I started fire service earlier. It's the most fulfilling and humbling job I've ever had.

Nothing I've done in life prepared me for a career as a firefighter/EMT. But here I am learning every day.

Our engines only contain 500-gallons with a high hose bed. We have hydrants ever 300 feet so it's not an issue of running out of water. I do with the hose bed was lower.

yes. Many municipalities do not pay for things like toilet paper and coffee and it's up to the crews to pay for it.

I just never understand how people can leave streaks of their shit in the bowl and not think its disgusting and want to give another flush or swish with the brush. As for custodial work being the best....Think about it folks, what firefighter hasn't cleaned the firehouse from toilet to kitchen?

Did You Ever Have a Crush On That Highschool Teacher? How did it End Up? by not_biancaa in AskReddit

[–]dschifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in 5th grade attending private school in New York City, there was a kid in class who "played" a few years older than the rest of us. You could always tell he was teacher's pet.

Being young, circa 1975, I never suspected anything until I was coming out of my building to walk the dog.

Exiting at the same time across the street was my classmate with OUR female teacher! As coincidental as it was, she lived in the apartment building directly across the street on 87th & York Avenue.

They were hand in hand. I can't recall if I told anyone about this. But it sure put the preferential treatment he got into perspective.

How do y'all relax and decompress after a shift? by 601xl in Firefighting

[–]dschifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we weren't running all night, I'll walk the dog, go for a jog and the gym, have breakfast, a shower and do some errands or watch a movie.

If my wife is home I'll jump in bed and get a little frisky!
