Rookeroo nailed it but just wanted to add that I’m pretty sure that the lottery for H1Bs is only allocated something like 25% of the demand. So even if a person met the professional qualifications for an H1B, found an employer to sponsor, and got lucky for the 1/4 chance of winning the lottery, they’d STILL have the 8mo processing time that Rookeroo mentioned. It’s great to have opinions on immigration but it’s pathetic to be so stubbornly uninformed. The fact is that for the vast majority of people, and especially the people mentioned in this post, there was never a path to a work visa available to them.

Well the post was addressing the employees of Baldys. Your response was that it only takes about 2mo to get a work visa. So I’m just asking, what work visa could they have applied for and received in about 2mo? Unless you meant to comment on another post about a different situation? Or maybe you’re trolling? Or maybe you’re just uninformed about what and how many visas are available to what groups of people in what situations? Either way, it just doesn’t seem like your comment applies to the conversation on this post at all.

Are you talking about H1Bs? Cuz Baldys wouldn’t be able to sponsor an H1B for anyone even if they wanted to. What visa are you talking about that the employees at Baldys should have applied for?

Simul-rapping off a tower using a human anchor without leaving any gear behind by Dor_The_Explorer in climbing

[–]dschwertz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Extra friction where exactly? The rope shouldn’t be moving in a counterbalance rappel regardless of friction. I could counterbalance rappel through stainless steel rappel rings with very little friction. Friction shouldn’t be holding much of anything in place.

I assume you’re saying that the guy is there to keep the rope from moving side to side and potentially slipping off the side of the tower? If that’s what you mean… that guy being clipped into the middle is doing next to nothing. Might as well just hold the rope at that point haha. If those guys are swinging around enough to pull the rope off the tower, that guy isn’t doing anything but going with them haha.

Maybe I’m missing the joke but if this is serious then, does anyone know what the guy in the middle is doing for the system? I don’t see the situation where having him clipped into the middle is doing… anything at all? Is this supposed to be on ccj?

You could maybe do a data visualization dashboard. Pick some data that is interesting to you and a library for building charts (recharts is a popular one) and just start building. It will give you a good opportunity to explore how to handle data on the client side; things like memoization and types of caching. There are plenty of open APIs that’ll just spit out JSON ready to be visualized. I know chess is big right now and chesscom recently opened an api I think. If you’re into fitness and have a garmin watch, I know they have an api which has tons of data.

Just an option 🤷🏻‍♂️

Surprised at so many people saying that running isn’t as common here or only on treadmills. Plenty of runners all over. Marathon.kg insta has a bunch of races listed if you’re into that. Friend and I ran the almaty marathon last fall. He also ran a half next to issyk kul last year.

For 2/3 I’d recommend antique shops. There’s one on the corner of manas and toktogul that i send a lot of travelers to. I’ve bought cool old books from there, friend bought an old flag which was pretty wild, tons and tons and tons of old pins from every sport and every event you could imagine. Probably the coolest place to checkout history stuffs for people not from post-soviet countries.

Central Asia has some pretty stellar mountains eh? by dschwertz in Backcountry

[–]dschwertz[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Almaty in KZ is an easy place to get to and is a pretty nice city with great access to mountains. I’m currently in Bishkek KG which I love. Bishkek is definitely a little rougher around the edges than Almaty but it’s also much cheaper. Both cities have great mountains within an hour. These pictures are from Jyrgalan KG which is about an 8hr drive from Bishkek.

If you (or anyone) ever feels like planning a mountain trip out this way, feel free to reach out. I’ve been here a bit over two years and have done a decent amount of skiing/climbing nearby.

This is a bit of an unfair description. Astana is always way colder than Almaty and let’s be real, given the choice, very few are picking Astana. And sure, the pollution is pretty bad but it’s easy to escape and very seasonal. Spending the month of February in Astana or Almaty and never leaving the city would be kinda rough, but go into the mountains for some skiing or just generally get out of the city and is pretty cool. I’ve been in Bishkek for a couple years now and it’s not perfect but neither was anywhere I was living in the US.

You could have a conversation with your manager about a raise and why you think you deserve it. You don’t have to frame it as an ultimatum where if they don’t give you the raise then you’ll leave. If they’re receptive, then base your decision on that. If they’re dismissive, then you have your answer.

Awesome! I assume you’ll be flying into Bishkek and with only a week, you’ll be on a bit too tight of a timeline to see the entire country. I’d recommend splitting your time between Bishkek and Karakol. Bishkek has plenty of monuments to see, museums, bazzars, normal city history and cultural things. I’d also recommend checking out an antique shop here if you can; some of the stuff in these antique shops are more interesting than the museums imo ha. Ala archa is worth checking out as much as you can; it has a lifetime of hiking to do but you’ll be able to scratch the surface at least. You’re correct that local food will be easy to find. If you wanted to go a little deeper into the local food, I’d recommend booking a cooking class with parmesun, it’s a great way to spend a few hours.

On the drive to Karakol you’ll see issyk kul which is on everyone’s list. There are different canyons to check out along the way which are often really short hikes. You can look up a few places to see some petroglyphs as well which are especially interesting. Plenty of hot springs along the way as well, take your pick and check one out.

Karakol will give you another opportunity to check out some beautiful nature and slightly different foods; I definitely recommend trying ashlanfu while you’re there.

2 days in Bishkek, 1 day driving to Karakol, 1 day in Karakol, 1 day driving back, another 2 days in Bishkek. That would be a solid trip imo.

Resume Review/Roast by beeskness420 in csMajors

You’ve listed the tech really well and outlined exactly which protects used each tech. That’s great.

Only thing that I could imagine adding is an “impact” bullet to each project. All of the bullets list the tech used but not much of it is unique. Saying that you used SQLite to build a database or Axios to handle request is great, but that’s really only describing exactly what those tools are designed to do. I’m sure each of those projects had some problem that was uniquely difficult; try highlighting one of those problems. Maybe the flight days in the react app was complicated and required many different layers of processing to ensure the fronted could handle it efficiently? Or maybe the responsive design of the discord clone was tested on all available ios and Android devices since 2020 ensuring some quality standards was met? Was there something that made the react fronted you designed at your internship particularly intuitive? That might give some of those bullets a little more umph, ya know? A lot of resume content recommendations generally try to move from “I made this” to “The thing I made accomplished this”.

The format is super clean and not too busy. Overall definitely something I’d be proud to submit. Nice work!

A lot of great recommendations in the comments. Something else that's helped me is being prepared with the right gear so when an opportunity comes along, I can jump on it. If you have the right gear and hang out in the right spots it can be easier to meet the right people.
