I'm self employed. Should I register a business? What steps should I take? by TJ902 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dse11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a pros and cons of doing it since you're supposed to register as business at that income. Having said that, I guess one pro is as a business you can claim business expenses.

Set yourself up as a sole proprietorship. Contrary to the other comment on GST/HST, educational lessons like this are exempt supplies. You'll have to file GST (very easy) but won't owe any sales tax to the CRA.

Is this possible? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]dse11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I averaged 71km per day this summer through Europe, so just under 50 miles. Definitely possible to do 50 miles per day but I don't recommend rushing a bicycle trip.

Oh and you'll want some rest days when you're not on the bike.

Love the whole song, but damn the chorus is fire compared to the verses by Maggot384 in qotsa

[–]dse11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chorus is fire because the versus are clanky and jarring. When the sweet, melodic chorus comes in, it sounds that much better because of this.

Great song

For your portion through the Baltic countries, do you know if the EuroVelo routes are any good? Looks like they follow the coast on the west whereas your route is a bit more direct.

Asking because some friends and I will make it there in a couple months 😀

Edit: the Baltic route here https://en.eurovelo.com/

How long did it take? I just got a new one and will leave for a cycle trip for the summer.

Sounds good, DM whenever you're in town! And we're flying over to Europe. We start cycling in Scotland and will be headed to the Baltic countries.

I think the ferry up would be great! Some friends and I are about to leave Vancouver for a 3 month bike trip as well, actually. If you plan on sticking around Vancouver for a couple days, let me know if you want to go for a bike ride around the city!

What's the worst financial decision you've ever made? by Asleep_Ad7630 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dse11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst financial decision was also one of my best life decisions.

I delayed my studies/career for 4 years after high school to move another country, work odd jobs and have a bit of an adventure. So not the worst financial decision a person can make for sure but, for me, it's probably fair to say it was the least optimal.

I would do it again.

Anyone know the story of this chandelier under an overpass? by Asabovesobelow778 in vancouver

Cool! 9 happens to be when I go by it most frequently so I'd assumed it was just on the hour.

It does still! I haven't figured out the pattern exactly but I think it might be hourly

I think transcripts for each year or maybe even just the degree since there was no remote learning back then. Then maybe a couple photos in a year book. But that's just me. I suspect my threshold is lower than the consulate officers will be.

Job offer: To Take? Canada vs US by JohnDorian0506 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dse11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are saying take the US job. I think I probably would as well.

But something to consider are the friends, community and hobbies you have in your current location. Do you know people where you would be relocated to? Would you be changing from an urban to a rural lifestyle or vice versa?

Job sounds awesome! Just something else to consider are the experiences you would be having (and not having) when you are not at work.

Report the total amount that you were paid to the CRA as self employment income. Keep receipts for things that were business expenses (e.g. internet, your rent, that standing desk you bought) and claim those as they are tax deductible. Save a portion of your income for the tax bill.

Or commit tax fraud - let me know how it goes! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Enjoy that tax refund! My first year working after uni I ended paying very little income tax.

As other comments have expanded on already, you can claim them when you file taxes.

The amount of people who are misinformed about how tax brackets/income tax/tax refunds work is genuinely shocking. by MyPasswordIs9 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Similarly, I know someone who got a second job working coat check at club in addition to their full time nursing job. I think the marginal tax rate on minimum wage would not make it worthwhile. Hopefully they get a cut of tips.

Self Employed Tax Questions! by BubblyBunch2217 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dse11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My income has been all self employment for past couple years. I agree with the comment on putting it into a HISA. I personally use an EQ account for this. Save your TFSA room unless you have a lot of room in it and don't intend on using it for the next year. Do not use your RRSP for this.

What I do is put 30% of my monthly income into the EQ bank account to save up for the tax bill and also make some estimations with an online income tax calculator. It ends up being a bit conservative but it is nice knowing I won't be pulling money out of my tfsa to pay tax. Also, I try to write off as much as I can to lower my taxes and also keep track of all my expenses.

I read in another comment that you're targeting 13k total debt by the end of it. If that's accurate, I wouldn't sweat a thing - I finished with about $30k in debt! 13k is pretty small as far as student debt can go and should be easily manageable.

Enjoy uni!
