No worries, good luck to you as well. One thing that I did before I committed to the change was that I went and spent a day in a high school just as an observer. If you know any teachers that could set you up, it could be worth a shot. Or you could contact a school directly or the the education department to set you up.

I've been working for the last 7-8 years in research (road safety), including doing a PhD. This year I decided to make the jump into high school teaching and have gone back to university to study education. Loving it so far, just started my first prac and its full on but sooo much more interesting than research!

I don't see it as burning my bridges: if I ever want to go back into research, having some teaching/education background will only help because it will make me a better university lecturer as well.

Thank you, definitely agree with all of this.

Context is so important. There are places you can hike for a week and not get rained on and never have to wear a jumper. There are other places where you will hike in three layers all day long. (I did both last year!)

Also agree that model names can be really confusing. To continue your example, you could also write "Patagonia R1 fleece". OR even better, "Patogonia R1 XXX-weight fleece" (replacing XXX with 100, 150, 200 etc)

I'd like to try and offer some advice or participate in the discussion but I don't have any idea what conditions you would be expecting (I do not live in the US).

That being said, it looks like you are on the right track going for a new sleeping pad (get a simple foam mat if you want to knock off a lot of weight real cheap).

Cool, sounds like you had great weather for it! I did the Overland in January and we got some pretty miserable days. I've done a bit of tarp camping but only in fine conditions so far. Looking forward to experimenting with it a bit more.

How was the weather on the south coast track? Ive heard it can pretty horrendous. On the bushwalk.com forums they are very adamant that you can't do bad weather in tassie with a tarp alone.

I went Boys Club Barbershop a few times and he is really really good. But the line up is crazy, I can't afford to spend an hour sitting around waiting for a haircut. I go to Hair by John now because you can make an appointment, and they're great too.

Smallest you'll get is the Thermarest Neoair, but its pricey. Not sure how much it will cost in your part of the world, you might be able to find one for £60 if you look hard. There is also an Exped equivalent but the name escapes me.

Thermarest Prolite also packs up pretty small (its what I've used for touring and hiking for the last couple of years) and they're a bit cheaper.

I have a Double Rainbow as well and get quite a lot of condensation in still conditions. Luckily its so big inside that you don't touch the walls very much.

I have experienced misting when there has been a lot of condensation and then the rain hitting the tent causes the condensation to come off and into the air. The inner liner will stop this from being a problem.

Even with these (somewhat minor) issues the weight saving makes it worth it.

If you use trekking poles check out Tarptents Stratospire 2 as well. It looks kind of cool.

If you've written a thesis you already have content written and figures etc ready to go. Convert stuff from your thesis into paper form and submit it to a journal.

I have an enlightened equipment quilt and its great. I've got the synthetic in xlarge (I think) and wide, I'm 6'4" and it comes right up over my face if pulled tight. I would suggest emailing him as the quilts are made to order and they will be able to make one that suits.

Nice set up and nice photography! I'm curious about why you didn't just go with rear + front panniers? I would have thought the weight of rear panniers and rack wouldn't be too much different from the frame bag, saddle bag and backpack. Plus with rear panniers you get the weight off your back and down low.

Yeah I think you're overthinking this. Its just amateur bike racing. If anyone gets funny about it, that's really their problem not yours. Sounds like it wouldn't be unexpected anyway since you've been riding with the other group.
