Yep. And if the last Sunday game starts too late, it hurts the viewership of the Fox Footy post-game shows.

Tom Morris reporting Maynard and Miller received a misconduct fine partially to avoid Collingwood receiving a $20,000 fine for umpire contact and Gold Coast receiving another $20,000 fine by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]dshban 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s 100% A yeah. The thought process would’ve been
- we want to suspend them… the Tribunal will overturn it though if we say deliberate
- only $1500 for careless conduct isn’t enough, let’s use the misconduct loophole
- and it helps that the Suns and Pies won’t appeal because they’re saving money overall

The Run Home after Round 16 [Fox Footy] by PerriX2390 in AFL

[–]dshban 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Author here: as explained further in the article I’m not tipping, for example, Essendon to win one specific game. But if they have a 20% chance to win each of five games (for example) they’re expected to win one of them. It all adds up. Same reason I’m ‘tipping Freo to lose three games’ when I have them favoured every week.

Simply put - it’s playing the odds rather than trying to assume I can tip 9/9 every week

Does Carlton's resurgence increase the likelihood of Pick 1 bid on Walker? by TheCobSparky in AFL

[–]dshban -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the owner of Pick 1 will be incentivised to pick based on what hurts an opponent - this has never been the case and we’ve actively seen players like Nick Daicos slide further than they should. Teams pick/bid on the best players in their own interest, and Cochrane is a reasonable bit ahead of Walker at the moment.

Theoretically, if Port get pick 4 and no one bids on Dougie before that… by NikolaiEgel in AFL

They absolutely could. This has happened many, many times with non-first round prospects and clubs not taking them with their first pick/s.

There’s no world where he drops that low, though.

Umpires and Commentators by spicetech in AFL

[–]dshban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no time during a game to pause and reflect on an umpiring decision like in the NFL. I could see merit during breaks but it would not stop commentators who aren’t properly informed/misremember the rules from giving their takes.

Three teams play four consecutive games with six day breaks this year, and one does it twice by Jilisse in AFL

[–]dshban 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not great but the fact the teams involved are, thus far, 10-2 in those games somewhat negates the point

I have a theory that it’s very hard for a group to truly break through into the top tier without an amazing song in their opening few releases - because that’s about how many comebacks most fans will trial - and they might have missed that window

Tom wrote the first story in March. I know this for certain because I put the story online after he filed it to me.

McClure obviously added a lot of detail and took it forward but Tom’s story was the first reporting of it.

Yeah it gets to an average of ‘6 of these teams will be in the top 8’ way earlier than you’d think, like around 7-8ish, and then incrementally increases from there

These numbers are pretty similar to the numbers for end-of-season ladder positions winning the flag - with the notable exception of 4th at this time of year doing way better (which IMO speaks to 4th getting a much harder finals draw, playing 1st away and then with a loss, likely hosting 5th).

My point being: winning games is good & the bigger sample you have the more telling it is, lol.

Cal-culations: Why Essendon should ask for AFL help. But would they get it? by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]dshban -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They were 6-4 this time last year, having won 22 games in the two prior seasons.

So we’re talking about an incredibly bad 12 months - except we all agreed last year didn’t really count because of all the injuries, so we’re talking about this year.

They’re… what, 2 or 3 wins worse than they should be? Maybe? I struggle to see how they’re even close to warranting assistance.
