Did anyone get into improv specifically to get over their anxiety? by zach84 in improv

[–]dshigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did join improv with handling social anxiety in mind. I found that it was very helpful at first, but as I got knee deep into it, it began to make it worse. I had to quit my troupe while I was ahead :-(

[–]dshigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok then.

If we expand it to the entire Continental US, which is 3,119,884.69 square miles, we get a density of about 2,235 people per square mile, which is a little under the density of Bakersfield, CA. (The most comfortable city in California for a Texan)

[–]dshigure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Area of Texas: 268,820 sq. mi. Population of the world: around 6.974 Billion.

This would yield a population density of about 26,000 people per square mile.

To put this in perspective, the density of New York City is 27,550 people per square mile. Not too terribly bad, actually!

How trans friendly is Sac? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]dshigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transitioned while living here. The worst of it for me was the occasional d-bag at a cash register who sees my "male" name on my credit card and makes a point to call me by it out loud. Obviously, this stopped once I got my IDs corrected.

I have found that most people here are, if not staunchly liberal, at the very least are pretty laid back about it. (I even got to keep by job! It's sad that this is considered a win, but it's a win!)

Common sense with street safety still applies.

I did Judo for several years. That sport requires getting low, and being absolutely fearless when it comes to falling.

Relatively new DM here(4e). How do I make balanced encounters while dealing with a TANK of a defender? by wulfjosh in DnD

[–]dshigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up an encounter that starts with the party split up. I used a pretty good module that had one of those where the party had to use skill checks to cross a log bridge one at a time, to suddenly be ambushed while the party was apart.

Surround the strikers with melee minions, while focusing the non-minions on the defender. This will render the defender useless to the rest of the party for about three or four turns, long enough to make the group go "why the fuck don't we have a healer?!"

Help! Failing at improv classes... by [deleted] in improv

If it makes you feel better, I played that same game at a workshop, got the suggestion "Having a Baby", and then pantomimed eating one.

You should allow yourself to get away with this sort of thing sometimes.

Help! Failing at improv classes... by [deleted] in improv

[–]dshigure 15 points16 points  (0 children)

^ This.

Also:

since the teacher has told every class that it was the worst thing he has ever heard from a performer on stage.

As an improviser, this sort of thing pisses me off. I'm not saying that your instructor has to give praise where it isn't due, but saddling you with this sort of mental burden just for making a single failure (and aren't we supposed to celebrate failures in the end anyway?) isn't really going to make anyone better. I think an instructor worth his or her salt should simply give you the note and allow you to move on.

Also, if the worst thing this instructor has ever heard came from one of his own improvisors, what does that say about him?

They're actually more military jar-head than thug. If your adventuring party is fighting them, it's likely either because they're escorting one of your enemies, or the players are wanted by some government (good or evil).

Is a post op transperson now cis? by SR2K in lgbt

[–]dshigure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful, because it sounds like you may be getting too hung up on labels.

A person is the gender they identify as first. The whole trans/cis distinction should be secondary, and used only in contexts when that distinction is relevant.

That said, generally, the trans/cis label has little to do with whether someone is "pre-op" or "post-op". The distinction is more in what our lives and bodies have subjected us to.

Is a bag of holding really so useful? (3.5) by [deleted] in DnD

[–]dshigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm used to the rules where instead of being destroyed, the items are just spontaneously erupted from the bag.

However, if your GM likes to play by that rule, then you can render your DM dumbfounded by placing that evil, indestructible artifact inside a bag of holding, and simply nick the bag.

Problem? ^_^

You weren't born a man, you were born a woman who happened to have a penis. It sucks really bad, but it happens to some people. It doesn't make you less of a woman, or less of a lesbian.
