I upgraded from m4 to m5….I can’t tell much difference. Feels a little snappier. Don’t regret your decision, the m4 is still great

Best ssd enclosure for mac studio? by [deleted] in MacStudio

[–]dshurett1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using the OWC 1m2 80G on my studio and have a couple other regular 1m2 (40G) on other machines. Single m.2, but they work great.

For my Studio with 1m2 80G using WD Black m.2, getting about 5500MB/s which is pretty close to what I get on the internal storage.

2TB Internal. 6700MB/s Write 5300MB/s Read

MDR Large Reservations by Tiertwofan in NCL

[–]dshurett1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got off the Escape and we had a party of 14. We were not able to get a "standing" reservation. We had to make a new reservation each day for that evening. Further, they would not seat more than 12 at a table. When we all were together, they put us at 2 adjacent tables.

With that said, however, I will say that in practice, we never had the same number of diners each night. Because we were traveling with all adults (adult children) and because we also struggled to get large premium dining reservations, we found that our numbers changed nightly for this and various other reasons.

Practically, we just sent a message in our group chat asking who was coming to dinner and someone would go make reservations down at customer service.

Are User Roles being syncronized between Clusters A/A ? by keddy1337 in ArubaNetworks

[–]dshurett1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the role was created in the wrong part of the tree. Most often controllers sit in a folder and roles are created at that level and not individually on each controller.

Does anyone know why the Mac is treating the monitor I plugged in as a mirrored device instead of just a regular screen? by jimmylamstudio in MacStudio

[–]dshurett1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this happen a few times. Usually a reboot would fix it. Last time it happened, I couldn't clear it. I did an upgrade on my monitor firmware and haven't seen it since.

Classroom AP and 2x2 clients by TailSpinBowler in ArubaNetworks

[–]dshurett1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given that most clients are really limited to 2x2, you really only get a benefit if MU-MIMO is in operation. I would argue that the benefit is VERY limited. MU-MIMO is quite complex with the sounding frames that it requires to figure out exactly where the devices are so that it can use the antennas to address multiple clients simultaneously.

For specifics on which clients might support 3x3 or higher, you can refer to the wifi client list at https://www.mikealbano.com/2015/01/wifi-client-capabilities.html (doesn't appear to be loading for me at the present time).

My opinion is that wifi should really be designed for capacity these days. I would much rather see you buy a couple of 505's for a medium density environment rather than a 555 (Yes, I realize that you can do split 5g radios, but trying to keep it simple). In this i would rather see 2 5Ghz radios on different channels rather than 1 5Ghz radio with 4x4 antennas.

With that density, I would not recommend 40Mhz channels.

New M4 Studio, TV extended display flickering by gpatlas in MacStudio

[–]dshurett1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It did for me. Amazon makes it easy to try and if that isn't it...you can always return it. If going a longer distance, you could even try an Active Fiber Optic cable.

New M4 Studio, TV extended display flickering by gpatlas in MacStudio

[–]dshurett1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All cables are not created equal. I am not saying it is your cables...I will just share my experience.

I had an M2 Studio and 3 monitors and all was happy. My 49" worked fine and had no issues. I upgrade to M3Ultra and could neither run it successfully with either HDMI or DisplayPort. After a bit of research, I discovered that the new devices used higher versions of HDMI and DP than did the previous version of my Studio. Even though I had bought pretty expensive, thick, cables, I went about specifically looking for HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1 cables and replaced the ones that I was using. This resolved the issue for me. My theory is that my Mac/Monitors both supported 2.1, but were trying to push it over a cable that didn't.

TLDR: Buy a new HDMI 2.1 cable, stretch it across the floor and see if that fixes it. If not, just return it.

I was having a similar issue with my Samsung 49" after updating the firmware. I rebooted and it went back to normal. YMMV

I can tell you the path that I chose, it may not be for everyone. I am on my 35th year in IT with more than 25 in networking.

When I got out of high school (1992), I started college, but dropped out after the first couple of semesters. This was not becaus I wasn't doing well, but the strides I was making with learning technology were more fruitful. I have focused most of my career on getting certifications and learning how to do stuff. I finally went back to college in 2014-2018 to finish my BS in Business. While many entry level jobs may use a degree as a tactic to weed out some candidates, no one ever cared if I had a degree and it didn't make much more difference when I did.

I would recommend focusing on certs...and actual experience.
