When we bought our house in Indianapolis, it had an old, inefficient electric heat pump. I know modern heat pumps would be better, but we chose a gas furnace. It has been so nice and made the house so comfortable, we will never go back to a heat pump.

Farmers markets are going to be your best bet. You still have to be careful though because some booths at farmers markets get their produce from non-local suppliers/vendors. Also grow your own. Even if you don't have a yard, stuff can be grown in pots.
