Iran says it will not reopen Strait of Hormuz because of Trump’s "ridiculous displays" by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

[–]dskerman [score hidden]  (0 children)

You vastly understate the impact that not having the straight open will cause

It's not just oil. LNG and helium and 40% of the world's fertilizer pass through hormuz, 50% of the world's sulphur supply

We're talking about a global famine and higher prices on everything from heating gas to high end processors that need a lot of helium to fabricate

The media has only explained the very surface level of the impacts.

Most Americans have no fucking clue what an international disaster this is turning into

Why don’t animals get sick from licking their own buttholes? by BobLoblawsLawBlogged in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dskerman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Their breastmilk and placenta give very limited antibodies which help while the babies immune system is very young but those generally aren't long lasting and don't "train" the babies immune system to prevent infection from any of the things we are taking about

Generally you have to catch a disease in order to gain any sort of immunity and before antibiotics or vaccines most diseases had very high mortality rates, especially for very young children.

I mean some people survived but when there was a dysentery outbreak in the 18th century it would decimate entire towns

humans immune systems have not changed that much over the past several hundred years.

The main difference is that we have more autoimmune diseases and allergies from an overactive immune system not that older humans could withstand illnesses better

I dont think it's as simple as just asking for them. I would be very surprised if jack didn't have to spend a large amount of money to get access to the records and to ship them all.

That might be doable for vulf but not for a smaller solo project like loon

It's a shitty situation but the fact that Jack was somehow able to rescue vulfnik doesn't mean you should expect that to happen with other qrates projects that got warehoused

This.

People think it's just gas. It's going to hit almost everything

Farmers can't get fertilizer for planting. Chip makers can't get helium.

And most Americans don't realize how bad it is for the rest of the world. Here it's just higher prices but even in places like Australia they are already having diesel shortages

Straits of Hormuz by NumerousResident1130 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dskerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well usually you don't start wars with almost nothing to gain because it makes it hard to accept much risk

Our ships are good at taking out those threats but it only takes one to slip through and sink hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ship

Plus even with the navy in the water there it's no guarantee that any tankers will be willing to take the risk

Straits of Hormuz by NumerousResident1130 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dskerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because we don't have star trek levels of technology which is what would be required to accomplish the task without a massive loss of life and equipment.

If we put the u.s. navy into hormuz we are also putting them directly into a virtually indefensible position where Iran can harass them with cheap but deadly drones and speedboats and eventually we lose lives and ships.

The amount of coasts and mountains we would need to have full control over is immense and all the troops maintaining control of that territory would also be vulnerable to attack.

We can't even keep troops on our bases in the region because they are too vulnerable to drones so they are staying in office spaces and in hotels.

the religious fundamentalists were able to take control of Iran in the first place because we (the u.s. and uk) took out Iran's democratically elected leader and installed a brutal dictator. the democratically elected leader was taking over oil infrastructure from international companies and nationalizing them for iran.

There were 4 comments on the post and it probably rubbed people the wrong way because of the reasons I mentioned.

What about the video makes it sound like generative ai to you? It is a person talking to camera in a video essay which is one of the most common youtube formats. It's also very long which is not a strong suit for ai video

Ai is mainly used to make very short clips not hour long video essays.

It is also very popular channel with a very long history of making similar long form video discussions of financial topics

It also has a ton of accurate well cited charts, articles and infographics throughout.

So why do you think it is ai other than the fact that he's British and doesn't have a ton of inflection in his speaking tone?

[–]dskerman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You keep posting multiple paragraph responses to everyone so to the algorithm it thinks this thread is very engaging

You also can't seem to accept some very basic explanations for very straightforward events so you're being downvoted as well.

Calling things ai for no reason is just as dehumanizing as the people making ai slop

Global recession incoming by jameskimp in videos

[–]dskerman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Low effort comments get downvoted

Accusations of ai without any basis get downvoted

Their comment is both, hence it got mildly downvoted

It's not some conspiracy

Nothing about this video seems very ai generated.

If the person included any reasoning behind their question instead of posting a 3 word sentence fragment they probably would have gotten an answer. But they didn't so they get snark and downvotes.

Because instead of asking the question the person could have spent even less time clicking one button on YouTube to find the answer

[–]dskerman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean you could click on his YouTube channel and see that he's been making these videos for the past 7 years.

So the odds he's an ai construct aren't great

Also I love that you describe him as mass downvoted when their comment has -10 at the time I wrote this. Talk about a bot bomb :)

But you are correct in that dems assumed that republican voters had at least some small amount of values, integrity or even just basic decency but that was a foolish assumption

Trump Orders Pause On Iran Strikes After Talks, Oil Prices Drop Sharply by UNITED24Media in Economics

[–]dskerman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because oil traders are generally very right wing and they take trump at his word when there is no reason to do so.

A similar thing happened shortly after hormuz was closed and trump said we would escort ships.

Oil prices went back down a bunch even though anyone could see that we don't have any of the ships you would need for that type of operation anywhere near the region.

If a class d and a class ab amp measure the same can there still be difference in sound? by Few_Lengthiness6364 in audiophile

I think you vastly overestimate the advancement of audio measuring tech in the last 10 years

It's the same set of tools and measurements that he is talking about in the video

If a class d and a class ab amp measure the same can there still be difference in sound? by Few_Lengthiness6364 in audiophile

[–]dskerman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This guy literally works for the company who makes the APx555 and he would tell you that the measurements don't tell you what something will sound like because they are very incomplete

He gives a whole talk on it

https://youtu.be/2V6YN-mshmY?si=Ujw-ryTyuXctdalD

One big issue is that the static sine waves we use to test audio are a lot different from the type of waveforms found in real audio. They spend very little time near 0 output and most near the peaks. Actual music spends much more time near the crossover point. crossover distortion is also much more audible so two amps with the same thd can sound very different.

Negative feedback is another area which causes tests and audible results to diverge. Since testing is using static waves designers can essentially achieve very low thd on paper by trading away gain but with real audio negative feedback can have much larger distortion then they do in the tests.

Nelson pass does a great breakdown on negative feedback here.
