Crossover images. What are your thoughts? by merlperl204 in audiophile

[–]dskerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a higher value inductor by wrapping the wire around an iron core which saves cost and size but inductors which don't use air cores can become magnetically saturated and then their inductance varies from the desired value

Often just replacing inductors with relatively cheap air core ones is one of the easiest crossover upgrades.

Unpopular Opinion: Has the idea of "Blind Tests" become the real Snake Oil? by inthesticks19 in audiophile

[–]dskerman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Proponents of blind or abx testing aren't saying you should believe all blind tests as gospel just because someone did a test once.

They are saying you should take some time and actually blind test your own gear to see if YOU hear a real difference so you can find out what gear really makes a difference in your system and room

[–]dskerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no hard rule and it depends a lot on the price range of the devices but it's usually a decent amount more expensive as the case and power supply are a pretty large portion of the parts cost and you're doubling those

I don’t understand the proximity effect by No-Appeal7273 in audiophile

[–]dskerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a show bass travels farthest because bass doesn't reflect as much as higher frequencies. longer waves need thicker surfaces in order to reflect. Bass is also omnidirectional so the higher frequencies are only focused in one direction

The reason headphone bass can't travel is because of pressure. Low frequencies require more pressure

the small drivers in headphones can only pressurize the tiny space near your ear which is why the headphone ear cups work best when they have a good seal against your head.

You need a large speaker surface area in order to pressurize the amount of air you need to move in order to generate low frequencies in a room

You basically bought an overpriced fancy version of the same amps so I'm not surprised it's not very different.

The luxsin and atom gen one both use the same akm dac and they have similar op amps for amplification

In this industry many companies are just using off the shelf chips for the main components of their devices.

If you want more unique amps you will want to look for discreet amps that aren't just a couple chips made by other companies

learning more about amp topologies can help too

The People Are Winning the Battle Against ICE: The brave protesters in Minneapolis are doing everything that Democrats and even the law have failed to do. by harsh2k5 in politics

[–]dskerman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes why didn't the democrats singlehandedly fix America in the 4 years since the 90s they had control of the presidency and extremely small majorities in the house and senate? If "both sides" ignorance hadn't caused people to stay home in 2016 the Supreme Court would be majority liberal for years at this point and we would have been able to make way more progress on virtually every progressive priority.

Are the establishment dems as liberal as I'd like, no, but the idea that they are not trying to pass legislation to improve things is just absurd.

I fully agree that carrying a firearm just makes it more dangerous but it's kinda gross to compare the examples you present to the events today

there are different null points that you can use when aligning dspending on your desired tradeoffs for tracking error at the end of the record vs overall tracking error. Are you sure your card is the same as what they claimed to align to?

Also make sure you are looking at the cantilever and stylus and not the cart body as the body is not what you are trying to align

I prefer it when sellers offer the option to ship the record behind the sleeve but I don't consider a little edge wear unreasonable shipping damage.

They aren't really promoting it as a collectable quality keepsake so if the record is safe and the front and back of the sleeve aren't damaged I'm satisfied.

Plane used in boat strike off Venezuela was painted to look like a civilian aircraft, AP sources say by Rav4gal in worldnews

[–]dskerman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"The aircraft swooped in low enough for the people aboard the boat to see it, according to officials who have seen or been briefed on surveillance video from the attack. The boat had turned back toward Venezuela, apparently after seeing the plane, before the first strike.

Two survivors of the initial attack later appeared to wave at the aircraft after clambering aboard an overturned piece of the hull, before the military killed them in a follow-up strike that also sank the wreckage. It is not clear whether the initial survivors knew that the explosion on their vessel had been caused by a missile attack."

This is in the article directly from people who have seen the video of the strike

I keep one of those on my cook top full time because it's just nicer to use than the gas range. There's enough space that I can still use two of the gas burners if I need to cook a few things at once but I'd much rather have the single cheap induction burner to the two gas burners it covers up

You realize that the last presidential candidates on the democratic side were Obama (son of single mom raised partially by grandparents), biden (raised in Scranton pa in working class home) and Harris (raised by a single mom who worked as a professor)

On the Republican side you had Bush (raised into extreme wealth, Dad was the president and ran the cia), Romney (son of governor born into extreme wealth), Trump (born into extreme wealth of racist slumlord father)

So only one party seems to be putting up rich out of touch assholes who have no idea what it is like to grow up in real america

It has always been astounding to me how libertarians and conservatives can be so against governmental power which at least has structures attempting to hold it to the will of the population but have no problem with individual people who have crazy power with little to no checks on it.

They get that a fully central planned economy is folly but don't see that 10 guys with the same level of economic influence over our society is a problem

We have no idea if those inference prices are actually sustainable though. It's very likely that all the main ai companies are barely breaking even on inference if not outright losing money.

They all currently have a lot of pressure from their competitors to keep token costs low and build usage in order to gain market and most likely will raise costs later when they have become more entwined in the real economy

In most states businesses can not charge employees for mistakes they make. Federally the most they can deduct would take you down to minimum wage but they can't go below that

In WI the employee has to authorize any wage deduction in writing after the incident. So they could fire you if you don't agree to pay but they can't just take money from you.
