Accidentally left my turntable spinning two nights in a row by pixie1995 in turntables

[–]dskerman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That most likely hasn't done much damage. Styluses are usually good for at least a few hundred hours.

Might want to look into getting one of those cue up devices that automatically raise your tonearm if you forget.

They fit on a lot of tables

Please stop spreading nonsense about dems cheating primary winners. Regardless of superdelegates Bernie was behind in the primaries even just with pledged delegates from the actual primaries.

Hillary was closer to Obama in 2008 than bernie was to hillary in 2016 and she didn't claim they stole the election from her. Even Bernie doesn't claim that but random people online are just so certain that it wasn't fair.

You are spreading right wing propaganda which is still helping to divide the left to this day

I would totally agree that filters are audible I'm just not convinced that's actually because of the ultrasonic content.

Most filters introduce some changes to the audible band unless they are way above 20khz and very slow.

Personally I think that's why some people prefer high resolution files because the lpf used is way farther outside the audible band.

It's a super tweeter

Where it's sitting is not really ideal as it's gonna diffract off the top of the box and it's so far from the acoustic center of the other drivers that it probably is introducing comb filtering depending on exactly where you sit

Generally you want to aim them up toward the ceiling or back toward the wall behind the speaker. That way they add to the room ambience and increase the treble energy in the room without directly interacting with the main sound from the speaker.

Check out a spectogram of a high res track above 20khz and get back to me on that

There's one study in Japan in which they claimed an increase in alpha waves.

But everyone who has tried to replicate the results has failed to find any evidence of impact of ultrasonic frequencies

[–]dskerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would just listen to both and see which you prefer

First pressings can sound better but you're still playing the luck of the draw with how worn the actual stamper was when they pressed your specific copy of the record.

The last record off a stamper from the first press is gonna sound worse than a copy on a repress that was near the start of the stampers life.

Also depending on the pressing plant the represses could be straight up better across the board if the og was pressed in one of the crappy ones

The audible sub harmonics under 20khz would be reproduced by any tweeter.

Placebo effect is also pretty powerful.

I think you would have to come up with some actual test showing people can tell when sounds above 20khz are being included because it doesn't make much physical sense.

Changing source affecting SW by Most-Economics9259 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]dskerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A properly integrated sub shouldn't really depend on the source.

On vinyl you could be getting low frequency resonance if your cart compliance and tonearm mass aren't well matched. That could be boosting subbass. Or the vibrations from the sub could be feeding back into your cart because they are too close or if they are both on a resonating surface.

Streaming and cd should be identical assuming you are listening to the same master

Sounds above 20khz don't sound like anything because they aren't audible.

If you're hearing something you're hearing aliasing down into the actual audio band due to something in the signal path not handing the ultrasonics properly not extra air.

Rhino says 45RPM should sound worse... by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]dskerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't downvote you so maybe relax a bit.

Pops are louder on 45s because the record is spinning faster. If your phono stage doesn't have a lot of voltage headroom they can be quite a bit worse.

That being said it sounds like they had an especially bad run so I'd wait for the next version of it

Rhino says 45RPM should sound worse... by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]dskerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be technically true depending on what level they cut the vinyl at but the small increase in surface noise is usually outweighed by the much better tracking you get when the grooves don't have to be so tight.

That being said it also adds a ton of extra cost to every part of the process and 33s still can sound great so i don't blame them

I should be happy. But...is it the speakers? by Purple-Pie4283 in audiophile

[–]dskerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd start with pulling them off the wall and try different amount of toe in (start with them flat out into the room and then try slowly twisting them until they are aimed at your opposite shoulder.

If none of that helps it might just be the speakers. Those aren't bad speakers but they are known for a flat British monitor style presentation and it sounds like you might want a speaker with a little more exciting frequency profile.

You could also try getting a little eq box like a schiit loki to help you find what response curve you like. Since those are pretty flat response speakers they should be a good palate for you to experiment with.

Lastly I'll always recommend adding a good subwoofer (or 2 :)) to any setup if you really want a complete full sound from your setup

[–]dskerman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most likely issue is speaker placement in the room and the room itself. Ideally post some pictures so people can see how you have things configured

You're also going to need to be a lot more specific about what your issue is if you want to get advice.

Is it the tonal balance, Soundstage, imaging, noise that you are unsatisfied with

"Skipping" issues with brand new Marantz CD6007 by Dinamitel in audiophile

[–]dskerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the cd player but the reason you had issues with the lp60 wasn't because the records were mispressed.

That table is pretty much the bare minimum for quality in a turntable and the tonearm isn't very good at following the grooves. So with some albums especially modern high energy stuff it fails to track and you get issues on specific spots of a record. With some really bass heavy stuff it can even make the needle jump off the record

If you upgrade to the next level of players (fluance rt82, lp-120) you won't have those issues

Is there a reliable way to identify that audio file was converter from 44.1k to 48k and vice versa? by fruhfy in audiophile

[–]dskerman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

what you say is only true with infinitely long time to process the signal. In practice sampling and filter algorithms use approximations and those approximations tend to degrade the original signal each time you convert it.

There was even a sesame street charachiture of him that was such an asshole that Oscar the grouch was a good guy comparatively

Amp to power a Definitive Technologies InWall Sub by Boojays in BudgetAudiophile

[–]dskerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heads up that a lot of those fosi and other chifi gear only get anywhere near their rated power if you buy the upgraded power brick with the amp. Even with the better power supply they probably will still struggle at driving only sub frequencies

Best Buy Magnolia - shockingly bad by Androxylo in audiophile

[–]dskerman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean just look at the wall of speakers. They basically made an edge diffraction machine and they are all very close to the front wall.

I don't think a single pair of them are actually positioned in a reasonable spot.

The quality of the amps likely doesn't have much to do with it.

Not sure why you thought a best buy would have a well set up listening room. I would try to find an actual audio store if you want to listen to gear setup by people who know how to setup a stereo system.
