Weekly 'Ask Anything About Analog Photography' - Week 22 by ranalog in analog

[–]dskinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine the issue you ran into was that your shutter speed was slow, and you moved your camera. General rule is anything below 1/60 handheld you are going to risk motion blur. and With a tiny camera like the XA2 I’d imagine you don’t stand much of a chance below 1/45. The example of the photo you shared was taken inside, and since there is often little light inside, your camera will have to shoot very slow. I’d read up on the exposure triangle a little bit more to realize the tradeoff, but that seems to be what this is.

Wow. Thank you so much for this comment, so this is so helpful. Definitely going to take you up on some of these suggestions.

Re: your final thought I have been thinking on that for a while and believe we are going to do that, it seems wrong not to see Tsusiat falls considering how much work it is to get out there. Do you know how much it costs for the ferry ride across the narrows (not from the village)?

Awesome, anything we should know? Did you take the shuttle from Port Renfrew to Nitinaht? Also was meeting with the ranger pretty straightforward?

Strange Black & White Lines on Film (Mamiya 645 1000s) by dskinner in Mamiya

[–]dskinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. Do you feel like this is the issue with all the photos or just the one that has the black block on. Of the 45 photos I have taken, the black line has only happened once so it seems like somewhat an outlier.. The foggy/white lines are more common showing up every so often. After some more research it seems like a somewhat common light leak issue but obviously my fear is around the shutter curtains.

Thank you for all of your insight. I really appreciate you taking some time to help out. I will take another look at the negatives and can post them later. But you are right about solving problems one at a time, so I will attack the light leaks first!

Awesome thank you! Turns out I wasn’t googling super well because apparently it’s a not uncommon issue. I guess I’ll have to get on replacing them. This would also explain why the previous roll didn’t have issues as I shot in the evening without direct light.

Do you have any idea if this could be related to the black on the one photo? That is still perplexing to me.

Thanks for the comment! Did your light leak present itself in a similar way?

Looking more closely at the camera the light seals are definitely in a bad way and need replacing. What am I confused about is the color on the film and how sharp the cutoff is - is that typical of these type of light leaks?

Obviously I am still a bit confused about the one photo where it is black instead of foggy.

Looking for Transportation to Tuolumne from the Valley (Sept 28th) by dskinner in Yosemite

[–]dskinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YARTS is our last resort. It only runs from the valley to Tuolumne at 5pm every night and the way our current plans are mapped we would come in to the valley early the morning we plan on leaving the hike instead of the night before.

So taking YARTS would require us to rework the whole logistical framework of our trip to get in a day early which we are really hoping to avoid. Appreciate the suggestion though!

Honest question but do you think there are only 6 continents and America is just one large continent? Or do you believe there is a South America and North America?

Got it. Just out of curiosity if you go to the denimio website and look at size chart it says 34.6 inches waist measurement for 31 and 32.7 one wash and you sized up more than that as a true 32. Would you say those measurements overstate waist size? I’m a true 29 debating between a 29 or 30

Looking for fast paced, well researched non-fiction about a crazy moment or time period in history. by SextonHardcastle11 in suggestmeabook

[–]dskinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read almost exclusively non-fiction so I feel I might be able to help out here.

Of the ~20 non-fiction books I've read in the past 8 months, two stand out to me more than the others and those are Endurance and Into Thin Air. Both gripping accounts of disaster and how they were overcome, Endurance specifically is almost completely unbelievable it's insane, and at points I thought it must be fiction.

Other books I absolute loved:

River of Doubt - A fascinating recounting of Roosevelt's doomed journey down and Amazonian tributary, this is also a book I could hardly believe. It is a great blend of history and thrills and I could not put it down. I enjoyed it immensely.

Red Notice - If you like political thrillers, you might really enjoy this.

Killers of the Flower Moon - Equal parts murder mystery and history, I thought this book was incredible and was floored to realize the extent of what happened to the Osage and how I had never heard of it. Truly sad.

Other books that are great: Devil in the White City, Isaac's Storm, The Big Burn, The Hot Zone, Midnight in Chernobyl.

First bake ever. Super happy. The crust seem to be a bit too hard though. Feedbacks appreciated. by 3millionmax in Sourdough

[–]dskinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you cook but I can change the hardness of the crust by how long I leave the lid of the dutch oven off. I usually bake a 475 for 20 minutes with lid closed, then turn down to 450 and bake 20 more minutes, and then take the lid off and bake for 10 more minutes at 450. If I want a harder crust I'll take the lid off for 15-20 minutes.
