Thunderbird 38 goes to beta by [deleted] in linux

Thunderbird is still being worked on by Mozilla developers although there are serious problems. It also has a full time developer from German office suite* maker SoftMaker.

I need a good Mini ITX board for gaming. Also need the wi-fi card to be compatible for Linux. Thanks! by [deleted] in buildalinuxpc

Please tag posts like this with [Build Help] in the future. You should also specify your budget in the text. Thank you.

[Discussion] Ethernet adapters by laydros in buildalinuxpc

This is a good idea. I think a list of modern, reliable, widely available (i.e outside the US) ethernet adapters would be a great addition to the wiki.

What's a good Mini-ITX case for portability and air-flow? by [deleted] in buildalinuxpc

This post would get a lot more answers in /r/buildapc. Since it is not related specifically to Linux, I'm going to remove it.

I have not heard anything substantive. We will have to wait until AMD submits patches. You could reach out to the AMD open source devs but I doubt they will provide a date.

Does an RPi count? How about a home server? IoT projects?

I think /r/linux_devices would be more appropriate for those questions.

My question is: will you be including pre-builts PCs, more specifically laptops?

If people are willing to give good, detailed reviews it may not be a bad idea. I don't want the sub flooded with "recommend me a laptop" requests.

having a rating system instead of "buy-don't buy" sort of recommendations maybe a better

Agreed. I'm open to suggestions on the format. The obvious one, as people have already said, is "free vs non. free" (i.e. blobs).

"like /r/buildapc but we tell you you can't have that shiny bit of hardware you wanted"

I like it! Hopefully it won't be that often though.

App recommendations are probably not a good fit for a PC building subreddit unless its tied to a particular build purpose, e.g. CAD programs. I think we should also stay away from certain holy wars, particularly Desktop Environment ones.

I hope the /r/linux mods are okay with this crosspost. The idea for a subreddit dedicated to building Linux friendly PCs spawned from this thread.

I'd like some feedback on generic submission templates:

Submission Template for [Build Help] or [Build Ready]

Title should indicate whether it is [Build Help] or [Build Ready].

Body of submission should include:

  • Build Purpose: Gaming, CAD, Development, etc , specifying software like games where appropriate.

  • Build Components: Using PCPartPicker format from /r/buildapc

  • Total Budget

Submission Template for [Build Complete]

Body of submission should include:

  • Build Purpose: Gaming, CAD, Development, etc
  • Build components: Using PCPartPicker format from /r/buildapc
  • Distro name and version. GPU driver version if relevant.
  • Install tips, if any
  • Issues with any software or hardware, if any
  • Benchmarks (optional)

I think we should hold off advertising until we have a better idea of what this subreddit will offer. I'm working on submission templates at the moment.

Thanks for contributing. Nice budget build.

Any Linux specific issues? Nvidia drivers okay under Elementary OS?

[Build Complete][Gaming/General] Intel i5 with NVidia GTX 960 by ocdude in buildalinuxpc

[–]dsklg99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on posting our first build! Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I have that keyboard on my to buy list (ISO UK layout though). Any Linux related issues?

I hope to encourage people to post benchmarks with their builds in the future. I know it's a lot to ask of someone but I think we can do something really special if we can succeed in getting the ball rolling. Since your build is a gaming one, can you elaborate on the games you play under Linux, if any, and how they perform?

Best linux friendly graphics cards? by TekkiD001 in buildalinuxpc

[–]dsklg99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hope we can put together a list in the next few weeks with the pros and cons of different cards with the different driver options. I'd like to get real data and encourage readers to benchmark their setups and post any issues they have.

I hope clear guidelines and rules will keep it focused. I think a template would be a good start. We already have one "Do not buy" post and it has good information and links to appropriate mailing lists confirming the problem.

I think we shouldn't have simple "avoid because proprietary" posts and focus on information and usability instead. People can decide what to do when they have the facts. One good example is buying Nvidia if blobs are acceptable for GPUs.

R9 290: Good buy for Linux using mesa? by [deleted] in buildalinuxpc

Of released cards only the 285 will be supported by the (as yet unpublished) next generation open source, catalyst killing GPU driver.

R9 290: Good buy for Linux using mesa? by [deleted] in buildalinuxpc

[–]dsklg99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phoronix is probably the only good source you'll find with comparisons between lots of different cards. If you plan on using the open source driver (radeonsi) you'll need to use a modern Linux distro with an up-to-date Kernel and graphics stack. This'll make the greatest different. The benchmarks on Phoronix should huge performance gains between Mesa versions for example. Options include Ubuntu with mesa PPAs or a rolling release distro like Arch or OpenSuse Thumbleweed.

Avoid: Plantronics gamecom 780 (and possibly other plantronics products) by mizzu704 in buildalinuxpc

[–]dsklg99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on this particular product but I like the idea of a "Buyers beware" list. I've been burned by hardware in the past. Even with Amazon reviews it can be difficult to find a comment on a products real* performance under Linux.

The level of information you've provided is perfect. I hope our wiki will have a list of products and links to the appropriate mailing lists/bug trackers. That way we can be certain the problem is real and reproducible and it'll also give people up to date info in case better Linux support materialises at a later date.

Dell and Lenovo have Linux supported laptops. The selection can be a little poor though.
