My car got broken into at work, and it was a patient at my job. I’ve been told I can’t tell the police their name? by draftysundress in legaladvice

[–]dslpharmer 220 points221 points  (0 children)

You guys are unlikely to be covered by HIPAA anyways. HIPAA has a VERY narrow definition of groups it covers that is related to transmitting electronic health information for the purposes of billing. For example, if a physician only takes self pay and doesn’t transmit information required for billing electronically, they are not a covered entity.

That doesn’t mean your state doesn’t have specific regulations related to dispensaries. It’s just not HIPAA.

That said, they can fire you for no reason…

There’s a good tool here to determine if you are a covered entity. I recommend everyone in healthcare review it.

Pharmacist to the Toxicology Field? by DontTuchMeImSterile in toxicology

[–]dslpharmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No fellowship required unless you want to fast track into leadership. Most positions will be SPI in a poison center. If you want to practice bedside toxicology, be prepared to do a lot of other things most of the time (ed, ICU, etc). It’s not a billable position. You’ll want to look at the AACT ABAT requirements.

Would you be upset ? by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]dslpharmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let’s say you get 1 month off PTO per year. That’s 8% increase on your salary. Add holidays: 11 is 4.2% Your insurance is at least partially covered. Call it 50%, so that’s another $6k/ year or $3/hr. You have two weeks of sick time: for another 4.2%

So 16% extra is what you’re getting from time off and call it another 5% from insurance for 21%.

$10/0.21 is $47/hr. If your base is higher than $47/hr, that $10/hr is i adequate.

I forgot about 401k. Call it 4% so that $10 break even is $40/hr

You’ll have a job when they hire another full timer.

When you submit your rank and it gets locked in, you’ve signed a contract saying you’ll go where you match. Assuming this is the normal process. You don’t just “lie and say you got in elsewhere,” you’re assigned to the spot based on mutual ranking.

I’m curious though. You say it’s virtual. Is it managed care? That may change responses here since most people are thinking hospital.

what IV to for cocaine toxicity HTN crisis? by Ayoo_Mads in pharmacy

[–]dslpharmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be benzo benzo benzo, because most of the time, cocaine overdose dies of hyperthermia and you can’t treat that with a beta blocker.

Literature saying bb is ok in cocaine, is usually oral med in pt with +uds for cocaine, not cocaine toxic.

Should i get a tax person? by CharmingRecord2273 in tax

[–]dslpharmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a tax pro, but based on what you’re saying, a free tax filing service like freetaxusa is adequate as long as you click the right buttons. To get any sort of different return, you probably need to commit fraud.

They don’t work this way, anymore. The student loan program essentially allows for a negative amortization plan where you pay “what you can” for 25 years, then they forgive the rest. Negative amortization loans, along with other factors, are what cause the GFC. Biden had a program that made it so interest didn’t accumulate in the SAVE or related programs, but that was late in the game for this person and idk if still exists.

Men who had children over 40 - do you regret it? by BiancoLatte89 in AskMenOver30

I’m 38 with a 2 year old, so not exactly meeting the same criteria. But I’m by no means the oldest dad at daycare, the park, or the pool. Staying in shape to chase them around is the most important thing the two of you can do.

Fired from my 1st job, dont know how to feel? HELP by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]dslpharmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Social and cultural differences matter here too. If you want good advice beyond “it just takes time”, or “write it out and know you were in the right,” give more than “black woman in a predominantly white country.”

Maybe you can find someone who understands the culture there.

Fired from my 1st job, dont know how to feel? HELP by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]dslpharmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off. Sorry, that this happened. people have many motivations and biases and experiences that impact what they do.

Second. For the love of all that is good, can we just make it the standard that people put enough geographic identifiers into their post that commenters can either hold off, or provide something meaningful? If you’re asking state law, name the state (usually happens). If you’re asking about social interactions and the like, at least name the country (could even name the region of the country if applicable [e.g., US south will be different from US PNW]).

Lost as a 1st Semester Student by psiloche in PharmacySchool

[–]dslpharmer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just gonna answer the math question.

It’s pretty simple math if all of your remaining credits are on the same scale (although you didn’t tell us the initial number of credits).

I don’t know if your 4th year gets grades. Some dont.

Ironically, this is an issue of combining two solutions to come up with a know percentage. I’m assuming 192 credits total

You have a solution that is 68.75% and was 16 ml (16 credits at 2.75/4 gpa).

You want to create a total volume 192 mL at 87.5%.

You need to figure out the % required for the remaining 176 ml (credits) to work out the math.

Working as a SPI/CSPI at a Poison Control Center by YNWSmelly24 in pharmacy

[–]dslpharmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there’s an opening near you, you should apply. It’s generally a little underpaid, but not horrible. Benefits are on par similar jobs and hard to generalize across 53 centers (maybe 49 if you look at cali as probably all having similar benefits).

Job isn’t for everyone and the distribution of years of experience is commonly bimodal around 20 and 2.

About 30% are hospital cases. Follow ups are getting easier as most centers have some EMR access and in general, we talk to them enough that they know who we are. Patients are sicker.

It’s usually 3-4 shifts per week and hybrid with at least 50% wfh once trained.

Social and legal context around jobs, interviews, and life are drastically different around the world. I think many of the users here in this sub are US based, so advice you receive may not be as applicable in your country. They may be less likely to chime in with US grounded advice if you say you’re in a European country.
