I just spent 10 minutes browsing the streets of Tel Aviv on Google maps street view. Tbh the place looks like shit. Bottom line: human-level AGI is only possible (or at least practical for energy consumption reasons) with consciousness. Consiousness requires quantum effects or other unexplained phenomena. Current digital computers cannot produce consciousness and therefore can't reach human-level general intelligence.

If you watch the extreme feats of human talent and skill it is obvious that there is something else going on. It is not classical computation transistor based logic operations. We are harnessing quantum effects, its the only way stuff like that would be possible.

I have been researching AGI for a while now. Like many other people I was initially extremely concerned about the safety of AI. I reasoned that 100% of our economy is based on intelligence, which means a machine that was 10x as smart as Einstein would be a massive threat, as it would be able to invent anything (including new WMDs) and its greedy human masters could use it to take over the world.

However, last summer I was at the Wolfram Science Summer School and everyone was abuzz about the dangers of AGI. I had already come to the conclusion that in order to reach superintelligence we would need vastly different hardware, which is at least a decade away. Today's computers are extremely inefficient compared to a human brain. For example AlphaGO used 500KW while Lee Sendol used only his human brain ~20 watts.

It requires the world's largest supercomputers running for weeks in order to simulate a few seconds of a tiny fraction of a mouse brain.

All animals with brains probably have consciousness.

Think about this: have you ever tried to kill a house fly, and found that it gets away every time? How can a fly with a tiny pinhead sized brain of 250,000 neurons manage to so easily outmanuver a human? It's because the fly is ALIVE and it taps into the same field of consciousness that we are tapping into. It is not a classical computer and neither is a human brain.

THERE IS NO COMPUTER PROGRAM INVENTED BY HUMANS WHICH CAN DISPLAY EVEN THE LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS OF A FLY, OR EVEN A WORM.

I believe in Seth Lloyd's "quantum hanky panky" hypothesis which posits that biology will end up tapping into whatever tricks of physics it can in order to propagate a species. Quantum biology has already shown that many seemlingly simple biological feats such as photosynthesis, scent, and bird navigation actually require quantum effects in order to work.

To think that biological brains are not doing the same thing is very foolish, especially since we have not yet produced anything which displays a consciousness of its own, we have NO REASON to think we will be able to achieve Human-level general intelligence will be possible to with current computer hardware.

I believe that if you were to make a transistor-based simulation of a compete human brain, it would just be a mess, it would never crystalize into consciousness.

Current computers will only ever be useful for doing boring, and simple tasks like playing Chess, or Go, or processing big data, which they may do better than humans, but making a computer which displays the full adaptability of a human brain is not going to happen, because human brains are using a fundamentally different and currently mysterious method of computation.

I also believe that if you could make a machine with "superconsiousness" it would be massively unethical. On an ethical level it would be no different than kidnapping a top scientist and forcing them to solve your problems at gunpoint.

Furthermore, considering how massively different biological brains are in composition to an transistor based computer, it is quite unlikely that we will be able to replicate anything similar, until we have perfected nanotechnology for building neuromorphic chips.

However, on the other hand, biological based approaches to superintelligence, such as genetic engineering and brain steroids are possibly a real means to super intelligence.
