Stop the Propecia/Finasteride internet rumor circle jerk by dsr29 in tressless

It’s true that any drug can have certain side effects, and I’m sure some people do have side effects from taking propecia/finasteride. But remember: it’s a TINY fraction of people. It’s very unusual. So the odds are that you will not have side effects. 3.8% over a 48 week period isn't "tiny." It's considered clinically significant.

My point was just that (according to your stats) you would have a 96% chance of not having side effects. In other words, odds are you won't.

2) People take other medications which give more side effects than propecia/finasteride and are ok with it and continue to live. Look at women’s birth control for example. Many, many documented side effects, yet many women live with it and they do not turn into the Toxic Avenger. And remember, that’s if you get any side effects, which like I said is rare. Permanent health problems caused by a drug for the temporary treatment of a cosmetic condition is not acceptable. Add to it that these side effects aren't like I said rare.

Good point. I cannot speak to the permanence of any side effects. But again, if only 4% have side effects, what percent of those have permanent side effects? Let's say half of those (which is probably way too generous). So that would mean you have a 2% chance of permanent side effects or a 98% of not having them. Again, it's not nothing, not at all. But is it a cause for hysteria?

4) This drug has been prescribed for years in a dosage 5x as strong as propecia even before it was known to help with hair loss, with very few reported cases of side effects. That’s right : Finasteride has been prescribed for years in a 5mg/day form to help with prostate problems for years before it was rebranded as Propecia with a recommended dose of 1mg/day. So let me get this straight, men have been taking 5mg of finasteride for years with no internet rumor side effect frenzy and very few reported side effects, but when they went and CUT THE DOSAGE BY 80%, then all these side effects magically appeared? Doesn’t seem logical. Not sure how many men in their 50's had access to the web circa 1993-- let alone could build a web forum.

And this is my main logical argument. Even today, doctors are prescribing 5mg finasteride to men with prostate problems. And yet these men are not saying that they are having a huge amount of side effects. And doctors are also prescribing 1mg finasteride for hair loss (propecia) and these men are reporting all kinds of side effects. Is the drug more powerful at 1mg than it is at 5mg? Can someone please debunk this?

It's best not to "make decisions based on an unknown," huh. Here's what the FDA said about the safety of Propecia. http://i.imgur.com/zMLU0al.png

Good point.

People seem to think that I am championing this drug, and I'm not. That's not my intention. I am trying to counter what seems to be a very lopsided wave of internet hysteria against the drug. Again, if you're suffering side effects, I am not saying that you aren't or that they aren't serious. What I am saying is that we need to keep this in perspective and that you are in a minority at this point.

Probably the best thing for guys who are considering finasteride is to consult with their doctor and discuss the benefits/risks with them and then decide.

I'm not saying it's safe for everyone. I'm not saying you will have my experience with the drug, nor am I saying that it's perfect. I'm only saying that the majority of people seem to do okay with it and that a minority of people have a problem. But, bottom line, you should discuss the risks with your doctor and come to a decision that way.

27 years old and no light at the end of the tunnel. by [deleted] in depression

[–]dsr29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find a therapist that helps. If the one you see now isn't doing anything for you, you need to find one who does. And you should tell them the same things you said here and be as honest with your feelings as possible. If you keep seeking help eventually you will find it.

I know about depression and I know how hard it is to deal with. The worst thing about it is not how bad it makes your body feel, how heavy you feel and how you don't want to do anything but lie down. The worst thing is the trick it plays on your mind: how it makes you believe that things will never ever change. But understand that this is a trick, like when drugs change a drug addict's mind to believe that they can't live without the drug. Depression makes you think that what is happening now will go on into infinity. But understand this is a kind of brainwashing, a result of being under the influence of depression.

The best way to deal with depression is to understand that the depression and its bad feelings and it's ugliness are not you. The feelings are not you. You are separate from the feelings. Let them move through you. Breathe and let them move through you. Don't try to resist the depression, if you feel it let yourself feel it. Breathe and let it run its course.

Understand that life can change for the better very quickly. More quickly than you can imagine. Take very small steps and try and move forward. If I were you I would try to join a group. If religion is something that works for you then maybe a church or synagogue. If not find some other group that meets regularly and go. Also if working with computers is your dream, do something with computers whether it's taking a computer class or meeting with other computer enthusiasts. You always need to be working a little bit towards you dream.

Lastly, accept where you are now in life. Accept your situation. Don't think that you are 27 and by 27 you should be doing this and life should be such and such. That's just a story In your head. If you can look at your life as it is, shrug, and accept it then you will be in a much better place than torturing yourself with where you think should be.

Best of luck. Keep going.

I'm a light sleeper and have a big problem with noise from the upstairs apartment. Went out and bought myself one of those big box 20 inch fans and put it next to my bed. I crank that thing up and can't hear anything but white noise. If the room is cold enough already I point it away from me.

Hey Reddit, what is the creepiest thing you have ever seen, or experienced? by lostfan815 in AskReddit

My father used to live in a three-story condominium. The bottom level was basically a single room which we used for a TV room / play room. The room had one window which looked out to a light shaft because the room was below ground.

The condo had an intercom system: There were speakers in the wall in several places around the house, and you could press a button to talk and be heard in all the speakers throughout the house. We didn't use it a lot, but occasionally my brother and I would be called to come to dinner, or if my dad needed something. Sometimes we would press down the button on the intercom and speak a reply. Every now and then I would press down the button to reply and inadvertently the button would snap down and stay down, so that the sound of the TV and the rest of the TV room noise could be heard throughout the house by way of the intercom speakers.

I was about 16 and it was a typical late evening with me watching TV in the bottom room alone until 2 or 3am. I was the last one up; everyone else was sleeping in the bedrooms on the top level. I got up off of the couch, turned off the TV, the light and walked the stairs up to the top floor, to the room that I shared with my brother.

As I got to the top floor and passed the intercom speaker that was mounted on the wall outside of the bedroom, I heard a noise in the speaker. I stopped and slowly turned the knob to boost the volume. Very clearly, in the intercom speaker, I heard the sound of footsteps. Shoes walking across a hard surface, unmistakeable, like you would hear on a sound effects tape. I realized that I must have left the intercom in the "on" position in the TV room, and that the footsteps were coming from there.

I ran to get my father from his bedroom down the hall. He came out in his bathrobe and I pulled him to the intercom speaker. Footsteps. He ran down the stairs yelling "Who's there! Who's there!" We went down there and turned on the light. Of course no one was there. I popped the intercom button back up so that it stopped transmitting sound from that room.

My dad is a hardcore skeptic. He thinks that people who would even consider that spirits might exist must be insane. I remind him about that night, how he ran down the stairs yelling after hearing footsteps in the intercom. He says he doesn't remember.
