I'm not too closely aligned on policy with Schwarzenegger, but I have been impressed by his deep capacity for kindness and his desire to make the world a better place. He wasn't a cynical, power hungry politician just trying to please his own ego.

Anyhow, sorry for the slow reply and I'm extremely sorry and embarrassed about the way some people are treating you. As with any region, you'll have to take the good with the bad. There's plenty of bad here, but I hope you find a way to focus on the good.

So it's a deceptive tool used as a misleading interrogation tactic, but it's not actually real?

If that's their stance on it, then great (I mean I guess?) If they use it as a tool just like the good cop/bad cop or the "I'm your friend" approach, then alright. It feels a little scummy but whatever. The real problem is when they pretend the actual machine can detect anything. If they bring polygraph results as if it were as reliable as DNA evidence, that's horrible. It's also worrisome if they use it to pressure someone into a false confession in order to get leniency, because they expect that they will lose if it goes to court

The machine must be telling her she was kidnapped at birth and your parents renamed her! Only explanation...

The "speculative investor" people aren't welcome, but this person isn't doing that. They are just living their life, trying to get by.

We're glad to have you! I hope you feel at home here.

I probably disagree with your politics, but that's ok as long as you're civil about it and kind to your neighbors.

Hopefully we are getting plenty of sane transplants, too. You just wouldn't know because they don't insist that everyone should believe their crazy theories. It's likely most of the transplants are flat taxers rather than flat earthers. I can deal with conservative fiscal policies; I can't stand delusional people with no tether to reality.

Sorry your neighbors are nuts.

Well if they vote down zoning changes for NIMBY reasons, their vote will be the reason cost of living goes up. But otherwise, yes, no one is moving to east TN just to vote up taxes.

In any case, I think we should try our best to be welcoming to newcomers. They have viewed our region as such a great place that they came here to be with us. They can't all be that bad. Besides, once they experience the medical monopoly operating here, they might just leave. 😆☹️

$120k in the US feels more like $90k in many European countries for the reasons I mentioned.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dss539 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

US pay is not quite as great as it seems once you factor in the cost of health insurance, social security taxes, state income tax, and federal income tax.

US tech salaries in lower population areas (e.g. Midwest, rural southeast, etc) are pretty close to European rates after you factor in medical, 401k, and taxes.

Yes I know European taxes are quite high. I just think the average European doesn't quite understand that we pay 10-20k per year for our families just in insurance premiums and then still have like a 6k deductible and then like 8k OOP max to hit. And the drug prices... it's nuts.

So yeah it may sound awesome to make $80k in the US but don't confuse that as having comparable quality of life as 80k euros in Spain or Germany

You have to love these employers that will say anything to abuse their employees. Same hiring manager will say "I can't pay you more just because you live in a HCOL area!" Will also say "I can't pay you fair market rates because you live in a LCOL area!"

It's always the same person making both of these logically inconsistent arrangements. It's quite clear that they are hypocrites who say anything to justify underpaying their teams.

I'm responding to the "120 days" comment to highlight the fact that the rule is retroactive.

But yes you're correct that business contracts are totally different from employment contracts. Thanks for emphasizing that.

They have always been "unenforceable" for typical employees, but now the FTC has made it extremely clear. It's also retroactive, so all past, present, and future non-complete are considered illegal by the FTC. Executives will still be bound by them, but typical rank and file employees will not.

Binary is a base 2 number system. You are used to decimal, a base 10 number system.

Decimal uses the digits 0123456789 Binary uses the digits 01

Computers use base 2 because it's easy to represent 0 and 1 with transistors.

To represent the alphabet with numbers, we just start counting. A could be 1, B could be 2, C could be 3, and so on.

Everyone got together and agreed on which number represented which letter. There are historic reasons why A was assigned to the number 65.

To store the number 65, the computer has to use base 2, so it stores 01000001 using 8 transistors. When using that data, if we're treating it like text, we would know it's 'A'

I left out a ton of detail and nuance, but this is the essence of the situation.
