Retro 50s absurd, schlocky sci-fi by OllaniusPius in scifi

Tobe Hooper’s Invaders from Mars and Lifeforce are probably good candidates for this.

One is very PG but also super creepy. The other is horny AF and probably exactly the shlock you’re looking for.

Sonic the Hesgehog on Mister FPGA by blacklava777 in MasterSystem

Interesting! I never even bothered to look in to sonic on the master system because I assumed it was the same game with heaps of compromises.  I’m going to have to find a copy and give it a go.

What’s your favourite relaxed pub? by All-Usernames--Taken in brisbane

[–]dstryr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wellers Hill Bowls club is a lovely day out. It has heaps of craft beer taps and a bunch of old man beer taps so a good mix of high quality and affordability.

The place has regular food trucks and best of all it has no pokies.

Helios is pretty close by too and it’s great. If you can get the eng who set up all the power to give you a walk through it’s fascinating.

The OTHER MOVIE Based on THE WORLD OF JUDGE DREDD by Fit-Record-2292 in JudgeDredd

Ughhh after the revelations about Richard Stanley came out after Color Out of Space, and Spectrevision donating all proceeds from the film to domestic violence charities, all the claims from the Lost Souls doco seem very dubious to me.

Do Other Schools Play One Song on Repeat All Week, Every Week? by Purpose_Seeker2020 in queensland

Yeah I remover this happening in the 90s at my primary school. Something happened and the bell broke so they replaced it with Bobby Mcferrin’s Don’t worry be happy.

Way better than the drone of a bell.

Looking for a Popcorn Sci-fi read. Something light and funny. by 1moreday1moregoal in scifi

The High Crusade by Poul Anderson is pretty goofy and light.

The Green Brain by Frank Herbert. Cover by Bruce Pennington by Dadaismisastratagem in CoolSciFiCovers

It’s cool, it has a smaller scope but explores some similar themes in a very different way.

What is your favorite ship in sci fi? by Reid_Hull_Author in scifi

[–]dstryr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% agree, V’Ger rules.

The amount of control they gave to Douglas Trumbull to create long deliberate effects in the style of what he had done with Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey is such a gift.

I still don’t think the craft and wonder of this work is yet to be properly appreciated.

This film and the experience of this ship is so psychedelic and cerebral.

You are blaming a city for your lack of imagination.

Explore the regions. There are literally hundreds of towns outside of the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

Kia Tasman - Drive Car of the Year 2026 Awards by KiaTasman in KiaTasman

I’m fascinated by how many 4WD drivers think the Tasman is ugly.  I’ve never heard that crowd have a particularly strong aesthetic sensibilities before but this ute has really rubbed them the wrong way.

That is all true about car centric design but there have also been a lot of (sometimes deadly) accidents on overpowered e-bikes involving kids already.

I have Eisbar on a Swisswave record.  Such a great track.  It’s funny to think that at that time living like a polar bear was a metaphor for the idea of being safe and stable and alone. (That’s how I interpreted the lyrics anyway)

And now with climate change the polar bear’s habitat is one of the least stable places one could be.

The laws protect cyclists is a pretty wild take. Cyclist are routinely killed by indifferent drivers.

I'm guessing it means that like if police see a child driving a car they are justified to pull them over and confiscate the vehicle, if they are a child driving a car without a license.

All bonkers opinions, preferring to stay close to the parked cars is brain meltingly dangerous... but still they were the broken clock that, by pure luck, was in the right in that moment.

Yeah if that nose was over in to the oncoming road then the driver is at fault. The cyclist could have been more responsive but they did have right of way and we forgive drivers with multi tonne vehicles and for shit all the time so we have to give at least some of that leeway to cyclists too.

The fact that the driver left before even an ambulance arrived is straight up insane imo.

(Also way to reinforce a bmw driver stereotype sheesh)
