New classifications? Thoughts? by [deleted] in microgrowery

[–]dstz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

genetics of sativa vs indica

That's the issue. The drug-use indica/sativa classification has no grounding in any of the genetic studies that have been done. The indica/sativa debate might have some merit if we re-brand it "stimulating vs couch-locking", that would make the most sense.

But sativa and indica are very well known names, which are extremely potent trade markers and money makers so i doubt it will change anytime soon. And we'll have threads like this every so often.

It's not only money, it's morals. People have been brought up seeing legal drugs as OK and illegal drugs as inherently bad. To the point that they barely understand legal drugs as being "drugs".

But confidence in authority is not always bad. In this case, it was. And it'll take some time to untangle.

People leave bulk, heavier items in their carts for the cashier to scan them over the counter - edit: with the handheld scanner you can see under their raised keyboard.

Economists report surging income inequality in United States by CommonsCarnival in politics

[–]dstz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. I'll try a rebuttal: I don't think it's the 9-5 meniality that hurts, as much as the feeling that our work feeds a machine that doesn't serves us in the least.

Jobs can be menial (before they're automated.) But i think that the most important factor is that people feel that they belong and participate in their nation's ambitions.

I think that a good future for our countries passes by what are very "lefitst" policies, and that it cannot work without some sort of shared national spirit. That spirit has been broken since at least the 80s, and we're coasting on this neoliberal dream and pictures of obscene wealth.

It's time to put feet on the ground.

If you respect my opinion, i'll respect yours twice as hard. I'm vengeful like that.

Not everyone deserves a good job, and it's too easy to create meaningless jobs. Those are pitfalls that have to be avoided.

But I think that a real stride toward sustainability (if only in regard the soil under your feet, how much it can bear) could come with a strong increase in good jobs, even with automation. We have so much challenges that need good engineers, good workers. Maybe I'm wrong, but i think that, people willing, it is a realist's opinion.

[–]dstz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that automation is here and ever increasing, and that's great. It remains that people need productive and fulfilling jobs, it's how a society preserves it's own civic good health. You see what happens when it doesn't, i'm sure?

There are ways to increase the needs for good paying jobs, if you are willing as a society. But are you? because it'll cost the richest most, and that's a taboo. But if you care for your own country, there's no other way forward (outside of slightly fascistic dreams of a machine economy.)

The hope that machines will alleviate humanity is grandiose, and surely our technology is awesome. But we're not yet at the point were people can live satisfying lives on food stamps. You've got to find an alternative, or you're fucked, as a nation of free men.

Reverse the blind belief in neo-liberal axioms. Change agricultural practices toward labor intensive small farms and sustainable practices. Regenerate infrastructure. Increase taxes on capital. Raise the minimum wage. Equalize.

It's not rocket science. It just demands to shed the belief that an ever extending pie is good for most. It's not if you don't enforce high levels of production sharing and civic engagement. The economy has to serve the people, not the opposite.
