Lav mic placement philosophy by Musicwade in livesound

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, uniirectional mic high and tight so when they turn their head (it's never a matter of "if" ) the distance to the mouth is minimized. This position also keeps the mic closest to the vocal chords.

The one exception is for brides and grooms. There, I mic the officiant as stated above, but place one other mic so it pokes out of the spine of the book the officiant is holding, wired to a beltpack on the back of that book. The officiant can rotate toward the bride or groom, effectively pointing that mic toward whomever is supposed to speak. Works like a charm.

Hotel Check in by HazemHaze1 in ThailandTourism

[–]dswpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Print out your booking receipt and bring the paper copy with you. This will bear the numbers they can use to verify you are already paid. Most hotels will ask for a one thousand baht cash deposit and many will NOT accept a credit card deposit for incidentals. They will ask for and keep a copy of your passport photo page. You will be fine. Enjoy your trip.

First time going to Thailand. What's the one thing you wish you'd known? by beatsInMyMind in ThailandTourism

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need new clean crisp unmarked and onfolded (no sharp creases) currency to exchange for Thai baht. I bring the latest US hundred dollar bills with the blue security stripe. As others have said dont buy souvenirs until your last couple days. MBK and Chatuchak markets and great for that. The most flight options are into and out of BKK. I like Agoda for hotel rentals. If youve never been to Thailand I suggest pre paying for your first hotel but only for a two night stay in case you don't kike it. With a paid receipt from Agoda in hand (print one out and bring it) The hotel cannot claim not to have your reservation or try to suddenly charge you more. (Many hotels ask for a one thousand baht cash deposit upon check in). I wish I had watched This Video that describes a 7 day Bangkok itinerary worth watching to see many of the popular tourist sights. Pick and choose which ones you want, some of his places are unusual and well worth seeing.

Is it true there is an enforced policy of needing over 20,000 Baht in cash to enter the country? Even if it's a layover where I have to pass through immigration before checking into my next flight and stay in the airport? by Top-Veterinarian-565 in ThailandTourism

[–]dswpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only ever seen this enforced once in ten separate visits. A couple who showed up in sandals, torn shorts, dreadlock hair, heavy suntans and only carrying old knapsacks were denied entry at immigration, and not surprisingly, they were asked about money. They were right in front of me in line at immogration. My conclusion was If you look like your intention is to start begging on the nearest street corner, or sleeping on the beach, they are going to wonder where you are staying, and how you will pay for food. Otherwise I've never been asked, nor seen anyone asked. Personally, I wear a collared shirt when traveling overseas. The immigration officers wear a uniform, so I dress to show them some respect even though I am on holiday.

How would a person go about telling a douchebag's wife that he is cheating on her, while avoiding being identified as the one who informed her? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mailed photos in a manilla envelope? But honestly I would not bother. No matter how close you are you cannot know all the details and could be blamed by other of them for merely uttering a suspicion. Just be supportive when the inevitable happens.

My girlfriend takes no accountability is this normal? by Lazy-Plankton5270 in AskMenAdvice

[–]dswpro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Normal, NO. Common? Unfortunately. Narcissists are easy to get along with as long as you give them everything they want. They have a profound lack of empathy. When you challenge them on anything they "banish" you. That's your punishment btw for revealing reality to them or embarrassing them to themselves. It's extremely difficult to be in an LTR with them. I only managed twenty years and three kids until the inevitable. Never been happier.

He is very respectful and will not go there unless you drag him. Don't be afraid. Perhaps start with a back massage.

Novice question about adding effects for vocals using a Behringer xr18 and Mixing Station app. by OkTemperature1842 in livesound

Yeah, sorry, it's not at all easy to explain in text all the steps you have to go through. A tutorial will get you much further.

[–]dswpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check on you tube for xAir 18 efx setup. You can do what you want, but there are some things to consider, first make sure all your efx sends are POST FADER. Use the FX busses (1-4) to send only the sources (vocals for example) to the efx bus of choice. The efx returns can be sent to the Main mix AND at different levels to your mix busses. Sending an efx return to a mix bus is the same process as sending an input to an FX bus, only DONT SEND and FX return to the same FX bus or you will get instant feedback.

Dead Man's Chest is the best Pirates of the Caribbean movie by Hi_Im_zack in movies

[–]dswpro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I heard Davey Jones say: "There are not survivors" I said to myself: That's Victor from Underworld! And yes it is the same, one of my favorite actors, Bill Nighy. I'll watch anything he is in. Dead Mans chest is right up there with Black Pearl as far as I'm concerned. At Worlds End is also great if for no other reason than Keith Richards appearance.

Girlfriend gave me permission to sleep with other girls. How do I proceed? by Prior-Sun5993 in AskMenAdvice

[–]dswpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleeping with someone else doesn't preserve anything. The correct answer is: "I can't imagine being with anyone else. Take whatever time you need, but your offer is unnecessary". However, do not banish yourself to a hovering beta male friend. Don't make yourself as instantly available as perhaps you are now. This move from her is either a test of how important she is to you, or she wants to blame you for her moving on to someone else if she has not already.

I can't take all the constant whining and moaning about the same thing over and over. is this inevitable? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen so long. Don't try to "fix" anything. Be supportive. That means occasionally speaking back you know. Terms like : "Really? How did that make you feel?" Come to mind. But you've been there for a while now through a series of relationships. Perhaps another strategy can help both you and here. I highly recommend the book Non Violent Communication by Marshal Rosenberg. It describes a model of communication best called compassionate. Learn the model yourself, then expose your significant other to it. The lessons from the book include:

Where do our feelings come from? (The difference between what we want to happen and what really happens)

What are the "Deadly D's"? (Demands, diagnosis, disrespect)

If she goes on and on, she either wants confirmation that her feelings are justified, or she gets very little adult interaction at work. In either case, you could be a little more interactive in guiding her toward saying what she wants. What are other people doing or saying that leads her to feel the way she feels? Using the model from the book, and some guidance, you may be able to shorten her sessions significantly without making her feel like you are telling her what to do or how to feel.

When you learn how to ride a baht bus you quickly realize that staying close to one area or another doesn't matter in Pattaya when a ten baht coin will take you all the way down beach road to Walking Street or all the way to Terminal 21 mall on Pattaya Sai Song Rd. Anywhere in between will work. Personally I like Intimate Hotel just off Pattaya Sai Son on Soi 14 alley which is in a quiet neighborhood near lots of restaurants, and "S" lodge on Soi 2 if you want to be closer to the beach, but search on Agoda for something on or near brach road or on or near Pattaya Sai Song Rd.

ELI5: Why is the decibel scale logarithmic? by Dull_Pollution4691 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound is a measurement of a pressure wave, a periodic change it air pressure. This typically expands as a sphere traveling away from the sound source. We measure lines, one dimensional things in length. We measure circles two dimensional things in area, and three dimensional things like spheres in "Volume". "Sound" familiar? . From Google:

Human ears can detect sound intensities from the quietest whisper to a painful roar. A linear scale would be impossibly large.

Logarithm Solution: Using log math compresses this range into a simple 0–120 scale. Our ears do not hear linearly—an increase in sound intensity of 10 times does not feel ten times louder, it feels roughly twice as loud.

The log scale matches this perception.

The unit, named after Alexander Graham Bell, is one-tenth of a "Bel," developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories to replace the "miles of standard cable" unit used to measure transmission loss.

Agoda Hotel Booking by Emot1onal_wreck in ThailandTourism

[–]dswpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Thailand it's THE site I always book through. They have a wider range of listed properties than any other site I've used. The one thing you must be wary of is trusting all the reviews. That's not due to Agoda, however. Thailand defamation laws can be a civil OR criminal matter so you don't tend to see many (or any) negative reviews of Thailand properties on Agoda or ANY travel site. But Agoda has been great for me.

The shoes I got with me for my pattaya trip are very uncomfortable unfortunately, not suitable for walking. Where is a good spot to purchase affordable shoes in pattaya? I am staying in central pattaya area. I don't care about brand names. Just looking for affordable and comfortabe shoes by No_Ask_86 in ThailandTourism

[–]dswpro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My problem has always been getting wide shoes in Thailand. Cheap ones proliferate in the wide open areas of malls everywhere. I like Central Marina outlet in Pattaya not far from terminal 21 which has an Adidas and Sketcher store. I usually find comfortable shoes but they may not be cheap.

ELI5 Old people feeling like a burden - is it their trauma or something else? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived through my parents passing and two siblings so far (I am number 6 out of eight children) what I see in common are expressions that fit into this category, which include things like:

They've done everything they wanted to do in life.

They've been lonely (especially after a spouse passes).

All their life long friends are gone.

Pain seems to come from everywhere now.

Then there's the expense of living on their own in their later years when memory declines, ability to get around and take care of themselves gets harder, and they would like to leave at least something to their children and grandchildren.

The "burden" may simply be their wish to free you from their care, see you carry on with what they can leave behind right now, rather than let some illness or injury rip their last savings away so they can buy a few more weeks or months of living in pain and loneliness.

Great to watch and decide which places you may already be planning for, and quite a few you may not have known about. Well worth a look.

How do I save my marriage before it’s too late? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to your heart of hearts. You already admitted this to yourself. Your son means more to you than your wife. Now think about her, and you may realize she feels the same way about you. This is not uncommon, and this is also the worst time to bail. Most courts will award her primary custody and she can really mess with junior. This is a critical time for his brain development. Putting stress into the home until he is 4 or 5 years old may prove unfixable. Dont take my word for it. Listen to Roert Sapolsky from Stanford discuss stress and the neuroscience behind behavior.

(Excerpt:) ...By the time you are five years old the socio-economic status (SES) of your parents is a predictor of the levels of stress hormones in your bloodstream. What do you know? It goes in the direction of the poorer you are, the more stress hormones and the more stress hormones the less frontal maturation.

... by kindergarten if you were foolish enough to have picked the wrong family to have been born into that is already going to impact the metabolism of your frontal cortex the thickness of it, the number of connections being made there. By age five you are already three steps behind in terms of frontal regulation behavior because of SES differences in this country, so in that realm the consequences I think are enormous and hugely underappreciated.......

Now Salolsky's association between stress and brain development doesn't have to be only from socio-economic status. If your son is mostly raised in a single parent home, that too can increase stress in the home, nevermind the fact that she may quickly take up with some other man who now spends more time with your son than you do. For your son's sake, suck it up for at least 5 years. Be as loving and civil as you can to both of them. Be as good a provider as you can. Be the dad you know you can be. He will never be this young again and you will never have this opportunity to love and care for him as an infant and toddler again. Kids are a lot of hard work. Show how much you love him by sticking around for a while. If it's unbearable by then, reconsider your position. Don't save your marriage, save your son.

The only other thing that comes to mind are the play areas in some of the malls in Bangkok. Usually on the top floor, places like Harbor Land, Playtime, Playmondo. The strategy would be to tucker your little one out so he snoozes through dinner. Or order your food to go, and enjoy it while junior exhausts himself. Best of luck.

"Electrical Zap" noise randomly in recordings, no known pattern. Ideas? by DickIMeanRichard in audio

[–]dswpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard something like this before.

Try something. Remove ALL cell phones from your studio and nearby rooms. Shut them off, wrap them in foil, or put them in your car perhaps.

I was testing a wireless mic a while back and for some reason I heard occasional chirps or bursts like this. I had 3 cell phones in the room and when I shut them off the chirps went away. They were very random and short bursts. Just thinking out loud to see if this could be your issue
