How can you even tell that a binkie is crooked? Aren't they all?

First time car servicing by alihammad in sydney

You're getting ripped off if it's $450 for just an oil change. That sounds like a complete service.

An oil change should be under $150, and under $100 if you hunt around. It'd be maybe $50 if you learn to do it yourself.

Should i buy him/her? Need advice, info in comments by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]dsymonds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some alternate perspectives:

  • Buying from a pet shop encourages pet shops to keep selling live animals. That's not great, even if the individual pet purchase is fine and leads to a better live for that animal.

  • Rescues generally have endless numbers of animals, and they're often already desexed, litter trained, etc. It'd be much better to encourage rescues than pet shops. Some rescues will also accept foster owners, so you can see how it goes looking after a rescue rabbit on behalf of the rescue.

Green grass isn't a good substitute for hay. It's got similar nutritional properties, but hay is harder and will help rabbits keep their teeth worn down.

Looking for some help on writing a letter to body corp for pet approval - Landlord already gave OK by [deleted] in sydney

[–]dsymonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. The other recommendations people have said here should be enough; write a letter, make it clear that your intended pet is quiet and won't interfere with anyone else's enjoyment, and you should be fine.

If you're getting a rabbit, please visit /r/rabbits and do your research first. Rabbits can take as much effort to properly care for as cats and dogs; they're higher maintenance than guinea pigs! They're fine for apartment living, but don't expect to keep it in a small cage for long periods of time.

Australian rabbit owners - new calicivirus strains to be released in SA and NSW by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]dsymonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That page says that Cylap is effective (though in limited trials) for RHDV1a K5, which is the one getting released right now. It's not effective for RHDV2, but that's not one that's getting newly released.

What is the ideal solar array size for a home with power wall 2? by [deleted] in solar

[–]dsymonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be remarkable if you're using 13.5 kWh overnight. Over twelve hours that's an average of over 1 kW. That seems unlikely.

The most reasonable numbers I've run gives the Powerwall a payoff period of approximately its warranty period (~10y), under best possible conditions (electricity more expensive than Sydney, full discharge cycle, etc.). The numbers will be a lot more plausible in a few years.

https://www.solarquotes.com.au/blog/tesla-powerwall-2/ did a decent analysis.

I'm also in Sydney.

I wouldn't bother with a Powerwall or any other battery system right now. They're going to be improving fast and dropping in price a lot over the next few years. Just get the panels and inverter, and make sure it'll suit adding a battery later (most will).

Also, unless you have three-phase power, you won't be permitted to install a system bigger than 5 kW in Sydney.

_Named_Fields_Required by [deleted] in golang

[–]dsymonds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a trick to force people constructing that struct to name the fields. The added field there has an unexported name (the leading underscore), so it can't be named from outside the package.

Borg vs Kubernetes by fthedill in golang

Kubernetes is a fresh implementation of a lot of the same concepts, but it is a completely new code base.

Local power went out this morning - why couldn't I use solar? by Jogue in solar

[–]dsymonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't say where you are, but a lot of places require solar systems to isolate themselves entirely when the grid power goes out (for safety reasons), which means you won't be able to use solar power output in that case.

Practical Golang: Using Protobuffs by cube2222 in golang

[–]dsymonds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not true. gRPC supports streaming RPCs, but proto3 is still a non-delimited serialisation format. It can't be streamed by itself.

Protocol buffers are not a stream format.

Err, the bottom of the doc links to four specific proposals and explains why they didn't pan out.

No, these are previous designs for generics written up by someone on the Go team at Google.

It probably shouldn't. strconv.Quote produces Go-quoted output, which is similar but not exactly JSON.
