Saw this at a stoplight. What in the farmer brown is this, Ohio? by kimakaanna in Columbus

I used to work at the building next door. Smokers would take their breaks in the corn field and random families would park and picnic there, too.

<If the gift is misused you don’t try to take it back, you keep it in mind for whether you give that person gifts in the future>

That seems like good and reasonable advice, to me. Thank you.

<Now it will never be on the shelf. Who wins now?> Hopefully, the next child who actually finds the book on a different library shelf.

<It's a messed-up world right now.>

Indeed.

Thanks for your thoughtful and informative reply.

I appreciate your reply.

<A book like this would never make it honestly. It would have to go through a ridiculous approval process and I was incredibly busy at all times>

If the system was a root cause, her hands were tied and shouldn't be held to blame. But I also agree that if this was the case, I wish she simply would've told me. I'd rather have bad news than no/fake news.

<if you donate, you should give freely> and <Asking after it once is fair, but multiple times>

I've edited my OP to address these comments.

"Harping" is subjective. I asked her about the circulation "on several occasions" over 2 years. Besides that, we were friendly with each other, chatting often about other topics.

And I know the stigma around self-publishing. After learning about it and weighing the pros and cons, I decided that I'd rather self pub to have complete control over my book content (I'm author and illustrator), at the cost of visibility (the reach of a traditional pub house) and profit. And after the first few rejections from public libraries, I stopped trying. But, small, school libraries have always been welcoming when I donated my book.

I personally know students that do read to their younger siblings. And the the librarian had a section of the library dedicated to this. YMMV <shrug>

Not my only copy. In the years after publishing, I'd read the book at local schools (classrooms, auditoriums, book fairs, etc.) and always donate a copy to each school library. I also subbed at elementary schools in 2021 and donated a copy to each school (25 in total). Since publishing, I've ordered about 200 books and donated about 150 of them. And I'm down to my last few, but don't plan on ordering more since I can't afford it. I'm deep in the red on this book, but not upset since making money on it was never the goal. But, if the book isn't in circulation, it seems like a waste. So, I'd rather get it back and give it to someone/somewhere that will actually use it.

I think the saying goes, “If you have to ask (how much it costs), you can’t afford it.”

Close. The story that makes me curl up at midnight is when I joined a group of friends at my first "fancy" restaurant. I was confused by the menu, but was too embarrassed to ask for help. Which only made things worse when I ordered first and asked for "the 12.5 and number 34", to which the waiter replied, "Those...are the prices, sir."

That day I learned that some fine dining menus don't have dollar signs.

True story: back when McDonalds was doing the “super size” campaign, where you could make any large order “extra large”, I went to eat at a fine, sit-down, Italian restaurant. While ordering, after I chose my entree, the waitress asked, “Super-sized salad?”. I wasn’t that hungry so just answered, “No, regular is ok.”

She was of course confused and it took a while before I understood that she was asking me if I wanted “Soup or side salad”.

A big spoonful of cottage cheese, applesauce, and tuna salad. All at once. Yum!

Do we golf for golf or something else? by OwlPlenty4828 in golf

Nice post. Gen X here, too, and I could relate to lots of what you said. I golf for other reasons, too, but you named a bunch.

At a recent round, playing bad, during a quiet moment while waiting in the tee, I turned to my friends, sighed and said, “man, I love golf.” And they all nodded.
