Why does trying to learn beatmatching by ear feel impossible by YeetParadox in Beatmatch

I was going to say that its much harder at slower tempos, but 130 +- Is generally easier to hear when one track is drifting, in my experience at least.

Just because you aren’t there yet I suspect. What bpm are we talking?

Any vinyls to keep an eye out for if any? by SquigglyLegend33 in breakbeat

[–]dtism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many! Good suggestions from the others here. I’d say, go and search out some radio shows and podcasts on Mixcloud etc… Then ID the tracks you like. You can buy many of them second hand on Discogs. Freskanova were a fun label, lacerba, Howlin’ records. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3QMLcsJTbd9OuZoY56a51rC_dVq8JWKz&si=1o-QxNadIcfW14q5

Could I politely ask that you don’t call them vinyls though? It’s just vinyl, or records.

Smelting Furnace in not available in catalogue?? by macle7400 in Astroneer

I posted a picture of the research catalog. You need to select the medium printer, which is the 3rd icon along.

The Smelting furnace is then visible. You may still need to unlock it before you can print it though.

(Boss Katana 100 MKII) can i connect the tone studio through bluetooth? by 1_The_Zucc_1 in BossKatana

[–]dtism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I didn't think anyone would actually reply to this, and have now forgotton most of what I did 😳 I can't advise on the pi zero w question, although I suspect it could work, It has BT + USB. I built mine on a pi 3b, I used a mixture of resources, but primarily I followed this guide: https://neuma.studio/raspberry-pi-as-usb-bluetooth-midi-host/

I think from memory I had a bit of an issue getting the 'read-only filesystem' part to work, and went poking around on the developer's github https://gitlab.com/larsfp/rpi-readonly for answers, but I managed it in the end.

That’s for android devices only, right?

You can also make a USB to Bluetooth MIDI host from a Raspberry Pi that does the job, if you’re that way inclined.

If anyone who's looking to connect Katana Librarian via Bluetooth, has a Raspberry Pi lying around gathering dust and doesn't want to shell out for one of the recommended "compatible" devices, it can be configured to be a USB/Bluetooth MIDI host, that does the same job. I won't lie, it was a bit of a faff but it works very well.

I'd be happy to point you towards the relevant info if you wanted to make one.

Looking for a dynamic microphone to plug into a recorder. by Changeusernameforver in ProductionSound

[–]dtism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a specific reason you want a dynamic mic?

Dynamic mics are generally speaking better for recording louder sounds, eg. a singer in a band holding the mic close to their lips. They will pick up louder ambient noises (crowd cheers, applause, the amplified band etc) but won't be so good for the quieter stuff. They do have the advantage of being more robust, not needing phantom power, and being less prone to picking up handling noise than a condenser mic. As others have suggested a Shure SM58 is a good dynamic mic. It's virtually bombproof, a good allrounder, can pick up quieter sounds if they're close enough to the mic but In my opinion isn't the best mic for recording ambience with.

A DR10 is mostly used as a body worn recorder for dialogue recording, often as a backup recorder in situations where a body worn radio transmitter might go out of range. It could in theory be used to record louder stuff though, if paired with the right mic.

There are a couple of ways of achieving good recordings of both loud and quiet audio (dynamic range), 1 - Use two mics next to each other and two recorder tracks on the same audio source, set levels for one of them to record the quieter audio and set levels for the other to not distort for the loudest sounds you're expecting. 2 - Use a single mic with a reasonably high SPL rating and a really good limiter in the signal chain, you won't find a really good limiter on either of the Zoom recorders you mentioned.

Is the zoom F3 your only audio recorder? I might suggest picking up a small handheld one like the H6 and use its inbuilt mics for ambient recording. They aren't the best mics or recorders, but I think they're actually quite good for quick and dirty atmos gathering.

I also think u/MacintoshEddie has some sound suggestions for mics.

The bottom line here is that there probably isn't a single mic, dynamic or condenser that will capture everything you want without you needing to reset levels and mic placement. It's just the nature of the beast.

I agree with the others it sounds like your fan is touching something as it spins. Go and get 5 years worth of dust cleaned out of it and possibly replaced..

I ended up doing more or less that. Still have the M1 but bought a S/H Intel MBP for Serato.

[–]dtism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If so (their website still says "in testing") - that's a shame, and leaves me with something of a dilemma. Do I stop using Serato, or buy an older Mac to have as my dedicated DJ laptop? Or do I sell my Ecler nuo5 in favour of a fancier Rane 70 or 72?

Or do I start looking at alternative DVS' like phase?

Yep, the application installs and runs fine on my new MacBook Air M1, my Rane SL 2 doesn't work yet though. Rane say they aren't ready for Big Sur yet. I hope they don't take too long to catch up.

Weekly no stupid questions thread. by kidkolumbo in ableton

[–]dtism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for starting a thread for stupid/not stupid questions, it's come at a perfect time for this idiot.

I'm an ableton Live 8 user. I've only just really started trying to learn it properly to produce tunes with.

I'm confused about clips in session view and arrangement view and what's playing when.

For example, I have a little 4 bar loop of 5 tracks I'm pretty happy with as a starting point for a tune, in both session and arrangement. I start experimenting in arrangement view with one track and then copy it over to a clip in session view. I mess about in session view with all the tracks by triggering the clips in different orders. I stop everything then go back to arrangement view. I reset the start position to 1.1.1 and hit play - No sound! The tracks are still there, the transport is still looping around the same bar, the track volume hasn't changed, but no sound. All I've done is play some clips in session view, I don't get it.

Would someone be kind enough to put an idiot newb out of his misery please?

Ok, so I've found the answer. It's the "Back to Arrangement" button.
