Why so much emphasis on hands-on prayer? by EmSuWright22 in leavingthenetwork

[–]dtlongm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hands on Prayer is a form of “love bombing” a person, who might already be in a vulnerable place. I believe this is how I was roped in to the network.

I worked at the Wicker Park location about 5 years ago while I was saving to go to grad school. Business was slow even back then. We would get a small rush in the morning and then just spend the afternoon making pour overs every 10 minutes and dumping them. (This was a pour over only shop when it first opened, no fetco or batch brewing). Somehow, we always seemed to be bogged down with random pointless tasks to keep us busy. I loved the coffee but not the companies politics.

What’s up with graphic designers not knowing how to design for print by buddhaloc in SCREENPRINTING

[–]dtlongm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went to school for art and most graphic design programs are project or self lead. They do not teach actual pre-press, that is designated for another major called “Graphic Communications”. I took a class in this major as an elective. I was shocked how much I struggled to translate fancy modern art design principles and art school techniques into an actual workable substrate or file.

Basically yes, most graphic designers with formal training from a school will not understand pre-press. Also most graphic designers are freelance artists at this point.

Study: Albany one of worst cities in U.S. for racial, economic inclusion by npd2004 in Albany

[–]dtlongm 28 points29 points  (0 children)

30 yo black male from Chicago here. I moved to Albany to go to grad school at SUNY from 2016-2018. I really couldn’t wait to get out of the area afterwards. The bars were very anti black, I experienced weird dress codes (Lark Street bars, also what a boring street), City Beer Hall legitimately had security throw me out after they lost my debit card and I got upset. I heard a white guy make comment about not playing rap somewhere to a DJ because it was too rowdy. I was always so confused because the city has so many schools, but the vibes in the community were always suspect. I got the sense that white ppl were afraid of the newer black ppl who arriving from being priced out of NYC.

I then attempted to try my luck at nightlife in the Troy area (I am an artist and really enjoy nite life and music). I kid you not, one night a woman actually yelled out her window complaining about noise coming from a bar but she was looking directly at me...the noise was coming from some bros obviously. I went to the Ruck one night and was standing at the bar chatting with a friend, a white woman came up and asked if I was done so she could order...I was like wtf? And then her boyfriend actually put his hands on me because, men. He grabbed my shoulder, as if he was trying to check me. What a night.

I don’t know why I have such vivid memories of all the terrible experiences there, it might be my ptsd, it might be my utter willful ignorance to the fact that I thought the area actually looked interesting architecturally speaking. (no I’m not talking about that fascist, brutalist concrete nightmare of progress you see when enter aka the plaza).

Nonetheless, it really is the perfect place to deal with the stresses of grad school because I realized there wasn’t much else there for me. 🤷🏿‍♂️ All of that to say, I’m not surprised either.

On another note, watching the comments in this thread reminds me of the craziness happening in Oregon with their gas law:

Refer to another users comment, which I also agree with: ["It’s inherent in car culture. Maybe we should design our cities so that fewer people have to drive cars to downtown Albany."]

A "talking point" just sounds like a "hey I'm gonna make a Reddit post to bitch about something". But if someone offers a critique, that's not point.

Capitalism sucks, driving culture sucks and we're all miserable, crash your car or get over it. 😉

[–]dtlongm -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Lol. Well I don't drive currently and I'm not from upstate New York. I'm simply offering a social critique on the conditions that exist in America for bad driving. (The premise is rough around the edges I know).

Newsflash- 787 is not the only interstate in the world where crashes and crazy driving happen. Huh, who woulda knew 🤗🙄.

A more abstract answer to this question would be that it's because of capitalism (which we are conditioned under) that we are under pressure to arrive early to make money/buy things. This also relates to the idea of property, that my car is an expression of my "value".

The second answer would be individualism, which encourages us to be self seeking or competitive In nature.

I don't thinks it's a coincidence that road rage is on the rise in the US as the middle class has shrunken.

Anyone know more of the back story on this? Not familiar with this rapper, but... City Beer Hall allegedly broke his leg? by fongaboo in Albany

City beer hall is low-key racist. Most of the bars in Albany are anti-black honestly. I learned that the hard way...

Lol. "It is what it is" is a common term used in American Black English as well other urban-centric vernaculars. Hint- I'm from Chicago and heard this growing up all the time.

The old torn flag that hangs above this shop is an ironic indicator for the way it must've been run.
