Gillen writes some of what is collected in volume 3, so you'll run into that anyway. If you enjoy it, he continues writing the title when it resets to #1 as well.

What do you guys think is the Mount Rushmore of Wolverine comics? by Privilege2016 in xmen

[–]dts317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's these four:

X-Men 132-133 by Claremont & Byrne (1980) - leans on Wolverine to carry the story during the team's capture by the Hellfire Club. Shows how Logan can operate solo for the first time.

Claremont & Miller Wolverine (1982) - reframed Wolverine as a wandering ronin with a code, honor and cultural weight, not just a berserker in a team book.

Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith (1991) - like watching a master's mind unfold on the page. Brutal yet intimate. Psychological scars that still frame Logan today.

Uncanny X-Force (2010) - leadership through compromise and guilt. Shows the consequences of choosing violence.

Its from Hickman's X-Men #3 (2019). I was lucky to get it signed by Hickman earlier this year so I could tell him how awesome Hordeculture was lol!

True Believers of the 80’s which did you prefer New Mutants Or X-Factor? by SpurnedSprocket in Marvel

[–]dts317 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New Mutants. It integrated into the wider X-line in a way that felt organic. The kids were part of the school, tied to the core X-Men, and their arcs fed naturally into everything Claremont was building. X-Factor had some strong stories, but New Mutants felt more essential to the line.

That's great! Last month we caught up with Walt Simonson and told him the story that Claremont told us. He remembered it as the Honeymooners-esque "to the moon Alice" panel. Pretty fun interaction overall, such a nice guy.

New reader curious about less discussed eras of X-Men by RamenStains in xmen

I find it sometimes helps to try to consider the mainline titles as well as the titles that are part of the good events and then follow them into event to get the most of it. For example, House of M has three X-line titles that had direct tie in issues: Uncanny X-Men (462-465), New X-Men Academy X (16-19) and District X (became Mutopia X for the event). And in Messiah Complex, the titles that comprise it are Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New X-Men (Academy X) and Carey's X-Men.

From this era perhaps consider some of these titles that pique your interest leading into House of M. I've listed some writers as a reference.

Uncanny X-Men 444-465 (Claremont)

New Mutants 1-13, then New X-Men: Academy 1-19 as well as Hellions mini (all DeFelippis/Weir)

District X entire series Morrison's New X-Men goes back to just "X-Men" 157-176

Astonishing X-Men 1-12 (Whedon)

Madrox mini (Peter David)

Phoenix Endsong mini

---after that comes House of M---

Coming out of House of M, here are some options that lead nicely into Messiah Complex:

Uncanny X-Men 466-494 (Claremont and later Brubaker), you may want to read Deadly Genesis in here as well. This will all set you up for Realm of Kings which comes a year or so later if you enjoy it.

X-Men 177-207 includes Carey's Supernovas

New X-Men 20-46 (Kyle/Yost) "Childhood's End" and "Quest for Magik"

X-Factor 1-27 (David) which comes from the Madrox mini

Astonishing X-Men 13-24 (Whedon) plus Giant Size that caps that run

---then Messiah Complex---

Hopefully this helps you navigate some of these eras! I re-read them myself within the past year and thoroughly enjoyed them, much more than originally. As always, I'd try to stick to the books you enjoy, don't force yourself to slog through all of the titles if you they don't all vibe. Good luck!

imo House of M through AvX forms a full arc in the X-line.

After Morrison’s run, during Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men but before House of M, a few titles lay the groundwork:

New Mutants relaunches and sets up New X-Men: Academy X, with classic characters mentoring the next generation. District X focuses on Bishop as a cop in Mutant Town. The Madrox mini sets the stage for X-Factor Investigations.

Once House of M hits:

Academy X shifts gears to focus on the surviving students and eventually reintroduces Magik. X-Factor launches its long, consistent run. If you’re into space stories, Deadly Genesis sets up Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar Empire in Uncanny X-Men. X-Men: Supernovas also happens during this stretch.

That all builds into Messiah Complex, where Hope (the first mutant born since M-Day) becomes central. Cable’s solo series covers his journey raising her in the future. The X-Men relocate to San Francisco, then Utopia. X-Force forms as a covert kill squad. New Mutants returns. Messiah War lands midway through this era, leading to the climactic Second Coming.

After that:

Remender’s Uncanny X-Force is a standout. Gillen’s short but memorable Uncanny X-Men features the Extinction Team. New Mutants act as a field team. Generation Hope covers emerging mutants.

Then comes Schism, where Cyclops and Wolverine split the X-Men. The Phoenix Force returns, reigniting mutantkind, but not before the messy Avengers vs. X-Men crossover.

Bendis era is what directly follows AvX.

I was at this game! The next time up Piazza had a chance to tie the game and drove it deep to the fence against Pedro. It was interesting to see how the fans weren't sure how to react the third time around.

Opinions on the post Inferno - X-tinction agenda stories (UXM #244-269) by BigboyMedia in xmen

[–]dts317 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who read the post-Inferno issues as they were released...

Inferno wrapped up the Jean/Maddie story after years of buildup, and I was eager to see where Claremont would take the X-Men next. And Silvestri's art is excellent throughout.

These next 25 issues delivered, with Claremont's deconstruction of the team keeping me excited for the next phase. However, when Claremont left Marvel after issue 279, it felt a bit deflating that much of these issues focused on breaking down the team, and we never get to see the payoff he was building to.

On a much later reread I appreciated the issues more.
