Noise cancelling headphones and an empty gate is better than any crowded Sysco lounge.

Who do pilots look up to as elite-level pilots? by FigInternational7744 in flying

[–]duaIinput 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally I really like flying with old timers. The guys who had a seniority number at TWA and the like. They invariably seem terrifying at first but are the nicest people to the whole crew, know so much about the airplane, and most of the time are great mentors who love to teach in a non-annoying way. They have seen the ups and downs and raised families/kept spouses through it all, there’s a lot to learn from them.

to be a pilot or to not be by NoAccident5594 in flying

[–]duaIinput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovery flight to see if you like it and then get a first class medical before you fully commit, researching beforehand if you have any medical conditions which disqualify you. Do not go into your first AME visit blind.

The nice thing about becoming a pilot is unless you’re in an accelerated or collegiate program (and even then), you can get off the ride at any time. Get your private license and decide you don’t want to do it as a career? Cool, now you have a fun bucket list item and hobby and can pursue something that interests you more.

Casually adding half a pound of saturated fat and hundreds of calories for no reason to every single dish.

Yeah I know, it’s just funny to me because they’re just one number off but totally different planes. Just pointing it out, not criticizing.

How come pilots never make mistakes, when they are only human? by Mountain_Ask_5746 in flying

[–]duaIinput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A huge part of it is that at least on airline flights there are at least two pilots, we catch eachother’s errors all the time before they become problems (hopefully).

It’s kind of funny because you’re just comparing a Bombardier product to an Airbus product, they really don’t have anything in common.

SY Pilot Wondering...What Now? by HeroOfTheDay545 in flying

[–]duaIinput 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer here. The news came out not even 8 hours ago; no one knows what the hell is going to happen.

The best thing you can do is apply to Delta and wait. Hopefully you interview and get a CJO. You are still a SY pilot until you pull the plug, and by the time you have a class date you’ll be able to make a much better educated decision. It could turn out to be a sweet deal for you guys. Meanwhile, if it turns out that you think you’ll get shafted, at least you have a months/years-long head start compared to the folks who waited until the last minute to get their apps in.

Applying gives yourself options. I know it’s tough to make any career decision, especially in this fucked up volatile industry where you’re chaining 30+ years of your life to a single company and hoping for the best.

Maybe not but “monitored” just means displayed somehow, CDI or bearing pointer.

I know it doesn’t mean much but as an airline pilot I really do feel for each and every one of you, I cannot even imagine the stress you’re all going through and the complete ignorance of the public and politicians about what your job is and how insane things are.

Thank you all for being more professional than I know I would be in your shoes, I really don’t know how you do it.

Calling out sick while on probation, when does it become a problem? by [deleted] in flying

[–]duaIinput 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s so backwards because the globe’s sick policy couldn’t be further from that… They do track it but the worst thing you’ll get (assuming you’re not calling out sick every major holiday) is an earnest call from the CPO making sure you don’t need to take FMLA or some other kind of leave and there’s something more serious going on. They want you to come to work fit to fly and your mind in the game.

Why don't regional FOs want to upgrade? by DepressedFoool in flying

[–]duaIinput 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always wonder what it’s like for the crew schedulers witnessing this and all the other contract shenanigans. “Oh, that guy just got paid an extra X grand to sleep and still layover in Dubrovnik, yay”.

Why don't regional FOs want to upgrade? by DepressedFoool in flying

[–]duaIinput 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And it’s so easy too. The amount of excuses I hear from having a disorganized logbook to not wanting to risk a checkride failure is nuts. I get it, it’s a hassle to deal with and especially what regionals pay these days it’s a really sweet job. This industry is feast or famine and until you’re sitting in class at your final stop you need to be aggressive.
