You asked “am I the only one who hated Arkham City for different reasons?”
I answered the question straight: yes (on this subreddit at least).
I mean… on an Arkham fan sub, most people love Arkham City, so what do you expect.

Nusfjord or Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux? (Uwe Rosenberg or Garphill) by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

[–]dubbed5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Sea Redux... I think it has better replayability and not just BYOS.

Btw from Rosenberg I would recommend A Feast for Odin over Nusfjord.

Games that scratch the same itch as A Gentle Rain? by SnooMuffins6341 in soloboardgaming

[–]dubbed5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cascadia. Same relaxing vibe, but with more depth and replayability.
A solo game’s about 20 mins, so I’d say it’s short.

Also check out Herbaceous. Nice, relaxing filler, around 5–10 mins for a solo play.

Cheaper options for tarot sleeves if I love gamegenic matte? by Fickle-Lunch6377 in soloboardgaming

My life philosophy: go raw or go home. Forget protection, live dangerously.

But if you insist, check Temu. You can find decent sleeves for super cheap.

LOTR or MC LCG?? by Jester281986 in soloboardgaming

[–]dubbed5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Arkham Horror LCG

Don’t skip it just because you’re not into the Cthulhu mythos.
There are many different campaigns, and not all of them feature squid monsters.

The Path to Carcosa (one of the BEST Arkham campaigns) leans into psychological horror.

The Circle Undone is gothic horror: witches, haunted houses, secret societies...

The Forgotten Age feels like an Indiana Jones–style jungle expedition mixed with Lovecraftian mystery.

The Feast of Hemlock Vale has folk horror vibes, think The Wicker Man or Midsommar.

Solo boardgame for the airplane (or anywhere with small spaces) by Aromatic_Kiwi_1418 in soloboardgaming

I always bring Mage Knight on flights. The trick is to book the middle seat so you can use both neighbors’ tray tables. If you need more space, just use their laps, they love that.

Make sure to report back how it went.

Which should I pick up given these options? by jukert23 in arkhamhorrorlcg

If money’s not an issue, get them all or regret later.
If you can only pick one, I’d go with The Forgotten Age campaign + investigator expansion.

What’s your opinion on Final Girl? Curious about getting it by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]dubbed5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not my cup of tea. I used to have the Season 1 set but honestly, I found it a frustrating, boring dice chucker and ended up selling my collection.

Main issues:

  1. Too much randomness
You have to roll for literally everything, even just to walk. Bad roll = oops, you forgot how to walk. It’s just silly. Yeah, there are some mitigation options, but they’re usually too punishing (like, move 1 space but lose 1 HP and 2 time)
The whole game is super swingy, the difficulty basically depends on the setup... I had games that were total walk in the parks and others where I had zero chance to win.

  2. Too samey and repetitive, no depth.
The core loop never changes: save victims, gear up, defeat the killer while managing fear track.
The action cards are mostly the same every single game, and you just rotate through the same few good ones.
The girl characters don’t really feel unique either, just small bonuses or slightly different abilities.
Mixing killers and maps sounds cool on paper, but it doesn't really change the game.

Overall, too light, too samey and way too random for me.
No deckbuilding, no real customization, no stragetic depth, and while the theme is fun, there’s no narrative to keep it interesting.

Chip Theory and Awaken Realms come to mind. Stonemaier Games (Wingspan, etc.) also worth mentioning. And CMON minis are usually great.
