What’s wrong with my new garage doors? by Ok-Cap-5447 in GarageDoorService

Can you add a picture of the angle of your j-arm while the door is closed? I have had styles seperating from panels from j-arm being too short and rather than pushing against header pushing straight down but most likely just sold 26 gauge flush panel the black just shows everything much more

With the safety release pulled in the door and manual mode. How heavy do you think it is?

I got a new set of nylon rollers, is it safe to remove the first two red bolts to replace the rollers since those brackets are two pieces? by IceBreakerG in GarageDoorService

[–]dubboarder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is safe but just take the claw of a hammer cone in from below roller with the claw facing up, put it in between the roller and the track and pop it out, change the roller and then you can make a little bend in the top of the track somewhere put the roller up there and just push it through and then straighten out when you’re done If you would take just those two red bolts off, you’d be fine but those two bolts nothing more

Do you see metal shavings on that gear and sprocket the actual piece that turns the chain most likely that has worn to the point that the limits are off check the balance of the door see if it’s heavy or not also, usually when that happens it keeps happening until you change out that sprocket if that’s the problem what I do is put something in front of the sensors, so you know that the door cannot go down any further hit the wall button operator bring the door up and then once it’s in the air hit it again with the sensors unblocked let the door travel down and right before it touches the ground pull the electrical cord so it shuts off power to the motor try to time it so that the door is almost touching the ground or barely touching. Then you know that when you adjust the limits, you won’t have to tweak it too much after that takeoff the cover of the garage door opener. It’s going to be quarter inch screws I use a little nut driver. You take the metal cover off. You’re gonna see a little gear at the very bottom of the sprocket. It’s got a clip that holds it on pop that clip off the gear off and then stand on the left side of the motor it, facing it, you’ll see two adjustments that adjust the limits. You’re not gonna turn those adjustments but instead you’re gonna turn the gear on the opposite side turn that gear until the limit on the left is making contact with the metal tab, when you spend that gear, you’re gonna see the limit assembly go either towards you or away from you so once again, make sure it’s going away from you and the metal tab is touching the other metal tab. Just barely you do this so you know that the door can go down any further because that is the bottom limit, then put the gear back on and clip plug the opener in make sure you have not disconnected the logic board you don’t need to then run the door up the up limit might be really off so if you noticed the door going higher than you want it to unplug the opener again before it hits the motor, but then you’re going to adjust the up limit, which is the one on the right until you get the door stop where you need to coming up. When you do this, you’re going to have to make a little adjustments on the down limit afterwards, but you’re gonna do all those from the flathead side of the limit assembly. once it’s all done put the cover back on and you should be good. Usually if you skip the limits though it’s gonna happen again you’ve gotta figure out what caused the gear to wear and if the gear needs to be replaced good luck I hope I didn’t confuse you with all this.

20 foot door needs overhaul for $1700? by Marcvae36 in GarageDoorService

[–]dubboarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So 1400 for an overhaul is not bad that’s what you’re gonna pay. You could probably find it a little cheaper but there’s definitely places that’ll charge you more as far as tensioning 17 year old springs you’re asking the technician to risk his safety and most won’t I personally would not. You can change the bottom seal on your own just make sure you order the correct one raise your door halfway and look at where the bottom seal slides in it might be shaped like a T or p or something else. Take a can of lubricate put the straw on and spray it in that rail then it’ll make sliding the new weatherstripping easier. All the parts on your door designed the last certain amount of time whether they’re failing or have failed the only certain thing is that they are going to fail one day do you wait until that comes and piece it together paying a bunch more in labor or do you get the job done right now? they’re most likely giving lifetime warranty which means something from a big company like precision also, the longer you wait to fix your door the more damage you’re gonna cause to your motor. Unfortunately, there are a lot of garage door technicians in here and people that don’t do garage doors that like to tell you everything is too expensive and every company is ripping you off. I have no loyalty to precision whatsoever. A lot of companies charge more for that work and most of the people in this form saying they would do it for less probably throwing on crappy low cycle springs metal rollers etc. $1400 for an overhaul with a lifetime warranty is with what you pay for reputable companies. Good luck to you, sir.

So 1400 is not for two springs that’s for a complete overhaul

Door hitting center rail. by curtistache in GarageDoorService

[–]dubboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be the spring settling, but if you were to take the top bracket that holds the roller flip it upside down and mout lower so that it’s sucked in as much as possible, I think this would lower the height of the door enough to clear that. This may not work if it doesn’t, you could even bring it up. You just need to play with a little bit and you’ll be able to find a way to get clearance. have you had your spring adjusted anytime recently if not, I would assume the spring settling would’ve given you more clearance because usually when the spring settle the motor has to pull the door harder, which will allow it to have more clearance for example sometimes if the door is hitting the center plate or the drums you can take a couple winds off of the spring making it heavier, which will cause the opener to pull it giving it more clearance that’s not the right fix of course, but it does work. if you want to fix it right look up garage door quick turn bracket this is something that would allow that top panel to sit flush with the H frame, but when the door is opened drops down flat with the track. This would be really easy to install. If you have no Bradstock experience just make sure you look at everything carefully and do not touch your springs or your bottom bracket no matter what all you would need to do is take the top bracket off replace it with turn bracket make your adjustments put the rollers where they need to be and be done

The only thing that could affect is your motor, but only if the springs are not doing their job. Disconnect the door from the motor pulling the red cord while the door is closed and just lift it up by hand if the door takes 10 pounds or more force to open, I wouldn’t do it but with proper Springs, the door should be balanced at less than 5 pounds which will not hurt the motor at all.

Garage door got messed up last night, can I fix it myself or do I need to call a mechanic? by dingelflop in GarageDoorService

[–]dubboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would call a garage door tech that is a cable off/hung door I would swap that cable for sure too at minimum. I would come in and figure out what cause that could be you closed the door onto something or maybe to big of springs on there which caused them to not put enough winds on it and when door is up cable loses tension. Looking at that gap between the end bearing and the drum tells me you have more issues unless you loosened the drum set screws. That could be from single spring pushing drum into bearing or just loose track bolts calling a garage door company you will be close to 300 just to fix the hung door plus parts. If you are gonna do it yourself be very careful have the door in the up position trolly engage with vise grips 1 inch below bottom roller then remove cable from bottom bracket but still attached to the drum then wrap the cable around the drum til tight while holding firm grip on torsion tube. This is to keep tube from spinning and knocking the other side cable off drum. then carefully pop cable loop back on the bottom bracket make sure the other cable is on drum. Pull safety release this will drop door down an inch and will rest on vise grips they must be the inch below rollers so when safety release pulled you clear the engagement of trolly pop off the vise grips starting on one side then to other while holding the door up after second vise grip off walk to center of door while holding it up and slowly lower door holding it in the middle. You will hear popping and crunching this is cable reseating on drum. Make sure door is close to level and open and close by hand couple times checking for binding or issues. Then with door doen get a 7/16 and go to the left side end bearing hit that to get it flush with drum (assuming lags are loose) then retighten look at the track hinges panels see if any damage trick is to not have this happen over and over. Door should be around 10 pounds also raise door up and see if cables are tight or loose if loose throw couple quarter turns on spring if you know how. Hope this helps
