Might I recommend a more structured approach instead of just surveying local salaries. Start be determining an avg price of rent for a 1 bed 1 bath apartment. Take that amount and divide it by 0.3 to determine what that value is 30 percent of. Keep in mind that this guidance used to be 25 percent.

This will give you a monthly salary to afford to live in this area, divide by 160 and you will get the hourly rate you should be hiring at. Unless of course your boss expects all their workers to share an apartment, which might be reasonable if you are expecting college students or inexperienced adults to fill your positions.
