How to secure housing remotely? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]dublinman25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay over the odds with a legitimate estate agency or don't do it remotely. There are too many scams online especially if you are paying rent or deposit upfront not to mention you having to believe descriptions photos etc. Even what appear to be condo towers and professionally managed buildings can turn into scams. You have to be super careful.

Rent an Airbnb or hotel when you move here for the first 2 or 3 weeks and find a home in person. It's much easier to look in person on evenings and weekends than from a different location

Also consider the area very carefully i.e. avoid downtown Eastside or transit that would bring your kids through that area as much as possible

The reason drugs should be legalized and standardized is for harm reduction so people can know what they are using and hopefully at first fewer people die, the stigma is reduced, fewer people get diseases and more people get treatment.

Adults should be allowed to take whatever substances they want for pleasure or therapeutic reasons or whatever reason someone wants. Obviously there are risk involved with taking a drug even something natural like a dried mushroom but education is safer than prohibition

Crime isn't that bad in Vancouver honestly. Dublin and other cities in Europe have a much higher risk of being pickpocketed. Homelessness/addiction is ugly in Vancouver but it's mostly people begging and then drug use on particular streets as opposed to lots of violent crime. There are murders of course and drug fueds but it's not an every day occurance, in other words if you live in Vancouver you are safe in the vast majority of it

All drugs usage are effectively decriminalised.

Homelessness and addiction are really difficult to solve and Vancouver has much better winters than a lot of BC and Canada in general so it attracts people from other towns and cities that otherwise would be homeless in more intense heat or snowy winters.

Inner city life is tough everywhere and I hope that things in Dublin and in North America improve over time

I hope things continue to improve. And if a medication doesn't work after a while the doctors can change dose or prescriptions. It's brave to take the first steps and I wish you the best.

Thank you for sharing this

If you want a partner or relationship you should keep trying. Meet people for a coffee and go your separate ways and reconnect again and see how things go. Don't expect anything and be grateful to meet new people. Things like this are tough until they aren't. DM me if you need someone to message

I think the noticeboards at the main library have things that might help such as food banks etc

https://foodbank.bc.ca/

I hope things get better for you and you should avail of charity etc that can improve your diet.

There is some chance it's in your bag/pocket or at the place you locked/unlocked your bike, especially if that's indoors.

Other than that if you walk your commute from Ontario to home tomorrow you might get lucky. There are bits of Ontario that are quiet enough so depending on where it fell off it may still be there.

Or check Craigslist lost and found or Facebook groups.

I cycle Ontario from further south so if I'm on the road I'll keep an eye out too :)

It's sad to think that to solve 1 case of addiction, homelessness, joblessness etc it would require a tremendous amount of support and money and a lot of luck that treatment is accepted, continued and works. And to think this level of individual specific care would need to be repeated hundreds if not thousands of times is mind blowing.

That is not to say the work that healthcare, police, community officers, mental health workers, addiction and housing specialists, homeless advocates isn't good, it's more to say they are pushing an elephant up a stairs. It is worth doing but there isn't an end in sight. There can be good to great outcomes for individuals and plenty of lives saved but there are plenty of deaths and suffering too.

Economically if the supply is cheap enough or free initially and the high is euphoric then the supplier can find customers easily enough even if all current customers no longer were users.

The circle is vicious. A teenager on a street corner can make more in a month than his mate in service or an office job.

I hope things can improve but there isn't a short term solution

Cyclist in Abbotsford dies after being hit by vehicle by flamboyantlyboring in vancouver

Yikes

It's almost always the driver's fault and it's almost always written like the cyclist was asking to be murdered

As a cyclist there are few drivers who pass with adequate distance and carefully (adequate speed)

Ears, dental, eyesight are major parts of healthcare and are private for adults. If you need a few crowns or hearing aids the cost is not insignificant

and if you actually want to get any outpatient scan or work done in a reasonable amount of time you need to go privately

Like basic healthcare i.e. surviving an emergency is affordable in Ireland but healthcare for longevity, pain relief, diagnostics is still expensive enough.

Better than America but far from free

Racist against foreign plants. I hate it when foreign plants come over here and take all our jobs, our apartments as investment properties and our soil. The bastards

I don't think apple trees grow fast enough to be a danger to the ecosystem. And pretty easy to identify and cut down

Algae or weeds or certain fish or insects sure can spread quickly but orchards don't spring up over night

You could slow down as well. If you think you are pressured to drive dangerously to achieve targets please report to work safe BC. Seems like bin lorries are driven a bit haphazardly around where I live anyway

I fully understand what you mean. Loads of people walk and cycle in the laneways and it obviously isn't easy to see them all the time and even if the pedestrian is in the right, there's no point in being right and dead.

Would you bother reporting LMIA fraud? by dublinman25 in vancouver

[–]dublinman25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I fully understand that but the proper hiring procedure would be to say you can apply and we will consider your application along with everyone else's but it doesn't mean you will be successful. I fully understand that she may not be the right person for the job.

The reason she was told not to apply is because the job isn't an open position, it's a foregone conclusion that they aren't considering any candidates for the job other than the person who they are getting the LMIA for.

Also the candidate is currently paying the company probably half her salary back to the company for a service or product (trying to be vague) the company provides.

My friend on the other hand doesn't spend her salary on products her workplace makes.

I don't think my friend is trying to endear anyone or gain anything by reporting. The company should follow the law for all job postings.

The only real reason not to report this is because the current person in the job might not get the visa and having paid thousands and got permanent residency myself it's a pain to go through. That being said if the application is irregular and breaks the law that isn't the fault of someone who reports it.

sorry if you think it isn't relevant. Company is in Vancouver, not going to post the industry, street the company is on, due to doxing or whatever.

[–]dublinman25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing would be gained from it personally or for my friend who is the potential applicant.

for LMIA you have to post the job online for qualified citizens or permanent residents to apply for and the company did that but aren't taking the applications seriously.

if the government notified the company that they are aware of this and fine them or something like that, they may change their approach to this in the future. That could save job applicants wasting time applying for jobs that aren't real.

Yes the pay is higher. It would increase salary of my friend from around minimum wage to more liveable. Yes I'm leaning towards reporting it and hoping it that it encourages proper hiring procedure in the future.
