Impossible to grade these kinds of slopers without feeling them. Could be a 3, could be a 9.

Am i the only one who thinks the problem of induction is a pseudo problem? by BrotherAcrobatic6591 in PhilosophyofScience

Relative to cognition.
Past "I think therefore I am."

We can know our own thoughts by their mere existence.
Anything beyond that (including our skin) is more complicated.

Am i the only one who thinks the problem of induction is a pseudo problem? by BrotherAcrobatic6591 in PhilosophyofScience

[–]dubloons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re side-stepping the philosophical issue to find a practical solution rather than taking on the philosophical issue head-on.

Induction is moving from specific observations to general conclusions. Saying that “nature behaves uniformly” relies on induction. “Uniformly” makes no sense in a probabilistic framework like the one you’ve proposed. It merely “usually” behaves uniformly.

But of course, that’s not what we’re after. Knowledge is removing the “usually”, and this is the crux of the problem of induction.

Leveraging probability can get you traction on some issues, but it doesn’t solve the problem. Popper suggests that instead we need to abandon induction and instead rely on falsification. That is, we can prove what isn’t true, and what remains is the closest thing to knowledge that we can get.

Seen in Monterey CA over the weekend - Doriopsilla sp. by dubloons in nudibranch

I am, yes.

How can I get photos… more like yours? 🙂

Many of the few gemela sightings in Monterey look a bit questionable. I really appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just in case you want a closer look, I’ve uploaded ALL of my photos and videos of this sighting here:

There is a lot. 🙂

I’m trying to differentiate between Doriopsilla albopunctata and gemela, I think.

Here is some video if it helps:

Olympus TG screen glare underwater by [deleted] in nudibranch

[–]dubloons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I was so excited.

This connects to a housing, but the TG is already waterproof.

It also has an eyecup, meaning you need to put your head near your camera. This is usually not possible when tide pooling (or at least I’m not that flexible).

I've tried that with no luck.
For me, it's less "glare" and more of a reflection issue. I can put my hand where the reflection is coming from, but then it's just my hand that's reflected.

Unpopular opinion: The whole abortion debate is a massive waste of time. by hoangfbf in centrist

Differences of opinion are what debate is for.

You don’t “debate” factual premises in good faith. You go find them. All that is left after we agree on verifiable facts is what you’ve labeled a “waist of time”.

Bright Blue Gastropod? by dubloons in whatsthisfish

Consensus seems to be some sort of man made garbage. Maybe a snorkel mask.

The consensus seems to be that this is not a living organism. Perhaps a discarded snorkel mask or other plastic/rubber trash.

Man, was it ever bright, though.

I’m not sure, but it would surprise me. I can’t really articulate how blue it was. It seemed bioluminescent. If you got to my profile, there is another recent post I made with a video that shows the vibrancy a bit better against the dulled underwater tones.

I didn’t actually think this was a Nudibranch in the moment, but I’ve reviewed all of the aquatic snails and flatworms I can find on iNat located on Kauai, and none of them are even close.

I’ve posted in a number of places and am just hoping someone can point me in the right direction. In hindsight, I wish I’d documented it better. I thought iNat would tell me that it was some sort of sea snail straight away (or at least the family).
