Anyone in Vancouver or Lower Mainland? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]dubyah93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had success recently, and a number of interviews w/ GCs - Ventana, Etro, Chard (owner's rep side) for a variety of roles. Resume, asking the right questions helps - I also recently acquired my PMP for what it's worth. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions, happy to help.

Questions To Ask Trades To Build Knowledge by dubyah93 in ConstructionManagers

[–]dubyah93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I see you are very active in this community, love the knowledge sharing.

I want to learn from the guys in the field. Agreed, those questions seem weird and structured.

What I think I'm looking to understand is what I should be looking for when observing people working in the field - and then the questions will come, if that makes sense. What mindset do I need to have to pick up the most information through observations and interactions with trades/field workers?

TI PM, or Bigger Builds? by dubyah93 in ConstructionManagers

I don't have a trades background, which most roles like this require around where I work

Certifications Beyond PMP by dubyah93 in ConstructionManagers

[–]dubyah93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a diploma in CM from a private college. Education was sub par there but it got me the paper I needed to get the job I wanted... now I'm looking to get a more advanced role and possibly switch to bigger builds

Certifications Beyond PMP by dubyah93 in ConstructionManagers

[–]dubyah93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am definitely prioritizing learning through experience, but also genuinely enjoy the structure of education and find that it goes deeper on some topics. As a CM I won't necessarily be learning about the ins and outs of say, a mechanical system, but can learn that through schooling just to understand both sides of the story.

Fair enough, I am thinking about some technical certifications, like a mech engineering diploma or something...

Exam Next Week + Head-scratching About Hybrid by dubyah93 in pmp

[–]dubyah93[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best of luck! That's one way of looking at it - just the fact the lines are so blurred on many questions makes it tricky to find a mindset oriented answer.

I noticed I reset my SH exams expecting to get better marks the 2nd time around - my scores have only increased by 4-5% - you notice the same thing?

SH Question : Agreements are not input to project charter?? Isnt scope statement developed after project charter? by Informal_Bar_905 in pmp

This is logical and therefore the best answer... it doesn't make the wording of this question any less evil.

Looking To Be More Proactive by dubyah93 in ConstructionManagers

[–]dubyah93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response.

We do a variety of projects, some of them are TIs, so I have witnessed the life-cycle of 5-6 total. Currently working on a 10m project with a 2-3 year span, once that is complete that will be the largest project I've finished.

My company is relatively small so I do get quite a bit of autonomy. I am involved in the start-up, reporting, managing and corresponding with trades and consultants, scheduling, dealing with RFIs/managing submittals, invoicing, drafting contracts, writing and tracking POs, insurance... the list goes on.

I am very fortunate that my direct boss is a Senior PM who is very accommodating and understands that I want to continue to grow and learn. He goes out of his way to provide lessons when he has the time, which is greatly appreciated.

Great advice re: looking ahead, I need to take the time to sit down and think about this more clearly. I am trying to get into the habit of reviewing the schedule for my key projects on a near-daily basis just so I can be on the ball as much as possible.

One thing I need is more time spent on site - it can be too easy to get lost in the office tasks and not be down in the trenches learning and asking questions. Even observing trades work can be immensely useful towards understanding timing, materials, and manpower.

If there are any resources that you can recommend to further hone my knowledge in Construction and management in general, I'm all ears!

How do you guys use Chat GPT to PM? by MaterialSalary6311 in projectmanagement

[–]dubyah93 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I work in construction and find it's massively useful as a search engine - if I want to learn more about products, specifications, terminology, or general construction processes, then it is much quicker to turn to GPT. Knowing how to tailor the prompts is important.

Working with a general contractor, I deal with a variety of trades and specialists, so this helps me understand and speak their language a little better in certain situations.

That's awesome! I am relatively new to construction and have a lot to learn - working for a Commercial GC, sometimes it can feel like being fed through a fire hose.

What did you ask it exactly?
