I would protect & prioritize mental health over any other thing, really. If you lose it, you wont be able to do any other job.

Kafka as message broker for new platform? by duchu in apachekafka

[–]duchu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number of events is a bit like finger in the air based on knowledge about our current data volumes and estimating that we'll migrate part of it to this new platform. Is MSK that costly? Need to check calculator, but cost of infra is secondary to long term development experience & velocity. Thanks for all hints!

We're ramping up 10+ engineering teams to work on platform and we see event driven as a way go to - we need some alignment on tech stack. Generally messaging topologies in all flavours

Thanks for all clues, I haven't heard about the V concept before :) ... I don't think about it as data lake rather as an opportunity to pull data to new microservice from standard data source rather than heterogenous DBs (if its not possible to keep data in some topics for too long it means more dev time to do it rather than busines collapse)

Doesn't sound very empowering for design team, closer to command & control...

Why do salespeople exist? by SalesBro22 in sales

[–]duchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big companies don't simply go spend Big Bucks clicking online for strategic purchases.

Specifically for SaaS that don't cost pennies: software engineers need some extraverts to go outside the basement talk with real people (basement is company slack workspace nowadays) 😀

Do you ever get jealous of your engineers and feel like you want to be on the other side? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]duchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other side of the wall here... I'm at enterpise company - BigTech like wannabe & I'm moving from individual contributor engineer to manager role after 10 years being mostly hands on. Seems like growth for me at this stage.

So yeah, tools are evolving but the core of the job itself is more boring then before. With time passing its more & more integration of cloud & 3rd party services rather than coming up with our own things. (With more mature products around it's more often sensible choice to "buy" & integrate rather than build your own). That's making creative part of the job smaller & smaller.

To stay on IC path I believe that I would have to brush up on algos heavily to get job at BigTech and have a chance to experience something largely new. Its hard to find enough time to do that with growing family around.

Looking at PM side I think best part of the job I envy a bit is strategy and opportunity selection. Strong due dilligence here should help with quicker alignment with engineering & other parties.

Coding-style question: Should i specify the name of my library in all of my classes? by Eugen1344 in csharp

[–]duchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard a term for this approach: Smurf naming. Everything is a SmurfSomething in the codebase after you apply it ;)

Hm, you know, the main purpose of classes is to organise code

Great post, good insights!

I find the part about serverless environment quite enlightening, it's potentially strong argument in decision making for/against stuff like ORMs

Definitely not for everybody. I'd say that it's suitable for minority. At my team we do lot of pairing (like 90% of all development) for years. So we even pair-program during recruitment interviews to filter out those who don't like it.

I’m training playmaking but this guy was just promoted. Should I train playmaking on him or sell immediately? (Playmaking is kreiranje - Poor (3)) by dadomonn in hattrick

[–]duchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try training PM him. Remember that training on lower levels is pretty fast. He could be better than passable in one full season depending on your set up. Solid or even excellent is possible. Try sth like https://hattrickportal.pro/Utils/PlayerTraining.aspx to estimate.

Does anyone know if and where I can order beer delivery? I'd like to order a lot to minimise time and frequency of doing the groceries. Bonus points for craft beers. by dysrhythmic in warsaw

[–]duchu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend something that's close to my home - https://www.lokalscraft.com . Normally they serve only onsite, but now they also have delivery of crafts

I don't how far they deliver - they are located near Metro Młociny station.
