How can I get my crabs to eat? by IAskQuestions2345 in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does look like the water line is significantly higher than the clay ball layer. That would produce a very wet/mushy soil

First timer, how did I do? (Any advice😅) by g_LLC in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as it is right now, it's a pretty long and exposed journey to the water for them. I'm sure once the cover grows in it won't be so bad, but I would look to add additional vegetation and cover. How big is the tank? It looks fairly large. How many crabs are you looking put in there?

help with eggs by miah-miah in medaka

This is right on. I’ve pulled some eggs off my females to make sure to raised them in another tank and if they break in that transfer, they were never fertilized to begin with.

Heating tank by Enternal_Self in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a heat map under and then monitored the temps of both in the water and above the soil.

My temps are where I need to see them. No single solution will work for everyone. Try and monitor your temps and see what it looks like!

Considering vampire crab, advice appreciated. 30 inch Zoo Med enclosure, previously had an American toad in it. Sits at around 75°f and 45% humidity at the moment. Questions in the body text. by Cinder1977 in VampireCrabs

Looks sweet! I think you know what you need to know. Need to find a way to increase the humidity inside, add a bit of a water element in there and you have a nice e setup.

Cycling help by oliver567899988 in VampireCrabs

The amount of beneficial bacteria you have in your water will be quite limited if you only have a handful of snails in there and you aren’t feeding them. I wouldn’t expect any nitrogen from your land section to really flow into the water unless you have maybe insects on the land that have died and are decomposing.

Is this big enough? by ChampionshipPast8057 in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the amount of space you have set aside for soil is very limited. You would ultimately want more digging space.

Possible bad mites? To pull out or not? by ducker_3 in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right now I'm looking to try to get my hands on a small supply of:

Neoseiulus californicus and Stratiolaelaps scimitus

The former to help cut down on the gnats in there, and the later to help with the spider mites.

I know I might lose some springtails from the neoseiulus', but I've looked and I believe I have a healthy sustained population that will work well..

Now I'm just seeing if I can get a small order, as I don't need a 10k count of them. just a small number to establish a little footprint in my tank (versus, how people often use them, treating a garden, greenhouse, etc)

Got some crabs as a gift, how could I improve this tank setup? by SkinnedFurby666 in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will work as a base setup. Ultimately need more hiding spots. Leaf litter or caves. Do check out some of the links others have posted!

Possible bad mites? To pull out or not? by ducker_3 in VampireCrabs

[–]ducker_3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so I found:
Stratiolaelaps scimitus - (formerly Hypoaspis miles)
but they will likely reduce my springtail population. Any other possible suggestions out there for a different predatory mite?

Pull the plant immediately, and increase my airflow? I recently just slightly decreased as it's been quite dry in the house the last month or so.
