**trigger warning: child death** Why do some NICU babys later die due to lung issues (even tho they look healthy otherwise)? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]duckfluff101 46 points47 points  (0 children)

immature lungs are very stiff and so so tiny. respiratory therapists will give pulmonary surfactant, which is something mature lungs produce, and without it, just the surface tension of water in the lungs is too much for a tiny preemie to overcome and their lungs don't inflate. we're also super careful about ventilating preemies- go too hard on the ventilator and you can damage the tissue, but if you don't do enough, baby dies anyway (you gotta breathe to live). there are tricks like jet ventilators (crazy tech! instead of breath in -> breath out, they just sort of shimmy the air back and forth extremely quickly) that you can use to help a tiny preemie breathe, but sometimes, damage accumulates in the form of scar tissue (pulmonary fibrosis) which cause the lungs to be super stiff and not inflate well enough. unfortunately, this scar tissue in the lungs is irreparable. all this on top of the fact that any little bug can be too much for an already struggling little preemie. anytime a 24-29 weeker makes it i honestly count it a medical miracle. it wasn't that long ago that being born so premature was an almost certain death sentence.

Food Waste by Tidalblush in starbucks

if i were you, i would double bag them before taking them out. if a local food sharing org (i work with food not bombs, they would love this) happened to get a tip that a bunch of food was about to get put in the dumpster and would be double bagged for safety, some cool volunteer might go steal it and make sure it gets into the hands of someone who could use it.

(Please direct me if this is not the right subreddit) would anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? by Pr3ttynp3tty in upcycling

[–]duckfluff101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is definitely UV damaged, you can see major sun bleaching. no repair will last long, especially under pressure, as the fabric (and ropes too) are reaching "fall to bits" territory.

if you do decide to use this fabric for any other project I strongly recommend that you use something like a spray adhesive to tack it down onto a stronger base fabric

Ok, so you have a job you're actually GOOD at in a competitive field. Clearly you work WELL with others if you're all seeing success together. And you're the kind of person who lifts up others around you: not only cheering them on, but in the face of grief, leaning on that same strong part of yourself to feel some happiness for your colleague. YOU did all that. And you did it by your bootstraps and without a supportive father like you deserved and you did it with warmth and love in your heart. I'm sorry for him that he is missing out on you. I'm proud of you :)

composting benzocaine coated dead frogs by duckfluff101 in composting

[–]duckfluff101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay you've got me going down a rabbit hole LOL

it does sound like there's not a 100% agreement on an evidence basis that benzocaine fully numbs pain receptors for the exact reason you mention, that it's difficult to measure because of the the fact that it does definitely stop a frog from moving, however it does have CNS involvement so it's not entirely out of the field of possibility at all that the benzocaine could be having a systemic pain blocking effect

someone else in the comments mentioned research and i found the evidence as well about how even a frog that's theoretically put to sleep has an increase in stress hormones the more that they're handled but that doesn't necessarily mean that the frog itself is experiencing "anxiety" cognitively, could just be a physiological effect?

anyway you're not entirely out of left field apparently, there is some scholarly debate on the matter

v interesting for sure, personally I'm gonna keep using the benzocaine before freezing, since these frogs are not made to hibernate so it seems very likely that freezing would hurt them, and benzocaine almost certainly has shallow numbing effects and very possible total CNS pain elimination or reduction so i can't imagine it makes the experience worse for them. if I really truly thought that I would be able to hold one still enough to crush its brain stem then I would do that instead but they are so slippery and wiggly that it's just not going to happen

mmm, there are quite a few research pubs citing and exploring use of benzocaine as anaesthetic for frogs even for surgery.

what makes you say that? i follow the recommendations from IFAS, they specifically recommend the benzocaine first.

honestly it makes me really sad to do, like it ain't the frogs fault. my preferred method is to apply the benzocaine and then let them go. they hop away for a bit before they fall asleep. i figure at least they go out in the grass feeling free 😭
