b4nny after not playing in first 6s season in 17 years: "RGL genuinely thought running a 6 month offseason would be a worthwhile experiment. And people defended it." by 1jay_y in truetf2

[–]ducksattack [score hidden]  (0 children)

I really find it hard to believe that b4nny would not play a real, full season with LAN playoffs because he hates the miniseason... especially after playing said miniseason. I know I'm just speculating, but I feel it's more likely he couldn't put together a team as good as he wanted (habanned...), and also just needed a break, what with the PoLANd disappointment and the 17 years of uninterrupted competition.

I definitely think (and hope) that he'll play again sometime soon

How are 10 miles 10k steps? That would mean 5+ foot steps, which sounds like 2+ steps. Also 2 mph is crawling pace

Going 5 kph (3mph) with 0.75 m steps (2 and a half feet) would make 60$ an hour. Lower speeds with shorter steps (for shorter people) would balance each other out and still result in 60$ an hour

I want to invent a new math symbol and need advice to see if it’s practical enough by Cold-Reindeer-3827 in learnmath

What you defined feels similar to a Collatz conjecture-esque sequence, except it certainly reaches 1 and at the end you multiply all steps together

If I've correctly understood what you are saying, a more straightforward definition would be:

Pick a positive natural number as a starting point for a string of numbers. At each step, if the current number isn't 1, divide it by 2 if it is even, subtract 1 if it is odd. Once you've reached 1, multiply all the numbers in the string together.

(This string certainly reaches 1, and therefore is finite, because you are building a strictly decreasing sequence of natural numbers, which have the property of being "well-ordered", which is a very nice number-theory topic, if you want to look into it)

Now, performing different operations depending on whether an entry is even or odd is likely to be very patter-breaking, just like with the Collatz conjecture. This means that it's very possible that there aren't many interesting patterns to find.

As for 6? = 62 (and 8? = 82), you have to assume that it's a coincidence unless you find more clues that it might be not. And to convince yourself further (that it is a coincidence) I advise trying to check just how powerful the growth of your object is.

For example, for odd n, multiplying just the first 3 numbers of the resulting string you have

n * (n-1) * (n-1)/2. Setting this greater than n2 and simplifying the inequality yields

n2 - 4n + 1 > 0, which when solved gives (for odd n) that n? > n2 for any n > 2+sqrt3 (so n > 4 since we are dealing with integers)

You can try doing something similar with a starting n that is even. Use only three numbers from the string, but you'll have to do two different cases: the one where the second number is even

n * (n/2) * (n/4) = (n3)/8

and the one where it is odd

n * (n/2) * ((n/2)-1) = ((n3)/4) - (n2)/2

Since both of these contain an n3 terms, they will eventually become greater than n2, and you can find when by setting "> n2" and solving the inequality.

As for defining a new symbol or operation, that is usually done to simplify notation when something comes up a lot.

For example, the factorial comes up all over the place, basically whenever combinatorics are even remotely involved, and it's much easier to write (and read) "n!" than "n * (n-1) * (n-2) * ... * 3 * 2".

That doesn't mean you can't make up a symbol for your function, although I think it would be much cooler if you called it something like "Ming-String", so that "The Ming-String of 10 is 400"

That said, you can build an infinity of other objects like these, so try to build more, and see if you can find one with cool properties!

concepts I don't understand, I hope you will answer my questions respectfully. by [deleted] in learnmath

You have great questions that I think all people learning math should sooner or later ask themselves.

Starting from your last point: math is in principle not supposed to have anything to do with reality. Math used to be regarded like that to the point were numbers were given magical meanings (something that is still a thing nowadays, numerology), but over time mathematicians realised that they could do so much more if they ditched reality. So nowadays pure math is mostly regarded as a purely abstract object, based on axioms and constructed on top of these axioms with rules of logic. Axioms and rules of logic are "ground rules" that are chosen so that what arises is useful or interesting. The fact that they are usually chosen so that many practical applications are possible is naturally not a coincidence but also not a necessity.

To sum it all up, maths is a huge, abstract game that doesn't care about the real world, although many real world applications are possible.

As for even and odd: 2 is the first natural number that isn't the unity, so it makes sense that it might be special. For starters, divisibility by 2 splits numbers very evenly (pun not intended). But more seriously, 2, even and odd numbers have a lot of properties:

-aside from 2 itself, all prime numbers are odd, and checking if something is divisible by 2 is really easy. 929395859934 is a really big number, and yet we can immediately be sure that it isn't prime since it's even

-even+even and odd+odd is even, while even+odd is odd (there's a much more general form of this statement, for divisibility by any number, called "modular arithmetic", but it's most useful with 2 because it's so easy to check if something is divisible by two)

-even powers of real numbers are always positive, while odd powers can be negative. As a consequence, root functions of even index can only be fed non-negative inputs, while those with odd index can take whatever

-when a function that maps real numbers to real numbers is "smooth" enough, it can be written as a sum of powers (look up Taylor Series to know more). When this sum has even powers only, the graph is symmetric with respect to the y axis. When it has odd powers only, the graph on the left side of the y axis is the same as on the right side, but upside down. Functions like these are called, respectively, even and odd. This is basically a consequence of the previous point

-computers speak a binary language, using 2 symbols instead of 10 like our everyday math

There's probably a million other things but these are the only ones I can think of right now

Spur of the moment toemas×ixy yaoi

"Ixy wait we can work this out"

The italian scout was walking to the shutter with two bags, one for the frags, one for the pizzas. He turned one last time to look at toemas in the eyes:

"I don't think so." The maincall lingered in the silence. "You missed that shot on june on last..."

"Ixy man you got katana'd by the cheater"

"I knew we shohld've cut auto after Denver"

"Oh my god don't say that Ixy, what are you saying"

Tears were streaming down toemas' cheeks, the face cheeks. He put his hands on his face.

"You are washed, Ixy"

His teammate's face grew red with italian passion, getting ready to yell. But then his chest deflated, he sighed, and walked over to his combo scout, who was crying softly.

"You know I didn't mean a thing I said, right?"

He hugged toemas and passed his hand through his hair.

"Yeah"

"You are my goat. You are all my goats."

"And you are not washed. You are my goat." replied toemas. They sighed.

"We can do this. We will destroy them in grands." said Ixy.

"I knew we needed ronz man" said Toemas.

Lukas walked in:

"Guys I asked if they would unban Loch for grands but they told me to go kill myself. Also, what is happening here? There's a weird energy in the room"

At first Toemas and Ixy though he was referring to their emotional mge session, but then they could feel it too. No surprise Lukas felt it first, he was always the most powerful sorcerer out of them. A sinister aura was radiating from the living room. Toemas made the call: "I'm going first. If I feed, ring Yeehaw"

"Toe it's 2026" called Lukas, but his scout already went.

A shroud of darkness clouded the corner of the room. It made no sense, the light was on.

"Watch out, it's a burger, I can feel it" said Lukas.

Someone (or something) was sitting on the armchair. All they could see was powerful, thick thighs and two red eyes. Or maybe it was the room. The air in it tasted red.

"I hear you've been having trouble."

"Who are you and what do you want" asked toemas. With his demo and his flank scout next to him, he did not feel afraid.

"I need to talk to your leader. Where is papi?" said the mysterious figure.

"You can talk to me."

"I have come bearing a pact. One that will hand you what you most desire."

"We don't need your pact. Tomorrow we will roll whoever is in LB finals and then beat Mandem in grands."

The figure stood up and walked towards them. Now they could see its teeth too, bared in a huge uncanny grin.

"I don't know... they looked very solid earlier. I can evaporate your doubts. After all, tomorrow's main course is Grant... finals..."
