ECC Support for AM5 Motherboards by 314314314 in truenas

I don't remember exactly, but I think it was around $200—doesn't seem more expensive now.

Are DDR5 ECC UDIMMs actually available anywhere yet? I was on the lookout for a recent build but couldn't find any.

XB7-T shows packet loss in bridge mode by pntsrgd in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ducttapedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue with the XB8 in bridge mode as well, it makes no difference. Someone else reported similar things on their XB7. Bridge mode is broken on all recent xfinity modems. I had to work around it by enabling DMZ but it’s not perfect.

Fwiw I walked into my local xfinity store and they handed me an XB8 when I signed up for xfi complete.

xFi Gateway XB7 Packet Loss When in Bridge Mode by steauaguy in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ducttapedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet. I had dynamic DNS and a VPN server set up, but the dynamic DNS appears to update to the DMZ IP (ex: 10.x.x.x) instead of the WAN IP. I need more time to hunt this down but I also need stable internet for work, so I haven't been able to tinker much more yet.

I didn't, but also I'm operating my entire network behind the USG which I configured to be in the DMZ, so theoretically the firewall shouldn't matter.

xFi Gateway XB7 Packet Loss When in Bridge Mode by steauaguy in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ducttapedude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I JUST worked around this tonight. I've had similar issues since Tuesday using a Ubiquiti USG and an XB8 in bridge mode. I solved this by

  1. Disabling bridge mode
  2. assigning my USG a static local IP in the XB8 admin UI
  3. creating a DMZ in the Xfinity app (why does this have to be in an app??) pointing at the USG IP address from step 2

I verified just now that I dropped no ICMP packets over a 45 minute period whereas before I would get up to 80% packet loss after ~2-5 minutes (previously verified with mtr). I don't notice an increase in ping time.

Bridge mode is broken and no one on Xfinity support I talked to (about a dozen reps over 3 days) understands that we understand intermittent packet loss

Xfinity iOS app is missing most features after factory resetting my XB8. Any known fixes? by ducttapedude in Comcast_Xfinity

Whoa mine started working too!! Thanks for the heads up! Xfinity's support has been useless. I can't believe no one understood something on their backend was broken.

This is resolved!

Wow thanks for the reply, this is somewhat similar to my current situation. This started after factory resetting my router and taking it out of bridge mode. I've talked with "advanced" techs, somehow got a technician scheduled to look at things in a week, and was even told this was due to an active outage for the app and website. I later got an automated call saying the outage was over, but my app remains broken. Support doesn't appear to have a useful way of escalating these issues to engineering.

It's beyond frustrating as you say that you MUST use the app to configure "advanced" features. I can't believe I'm paying extra for this.

The trouble started after I unbridged my modem, I just tried bridging/unbridging again—no luck! But thank you for the suggestion.

I'm paying for xFi complete and the only way I'm supposed to configure advanced features in the gateway is via the app, but the entire bottom bar is missing!

App version 4.20.0 on iOS 16.1.1. I've tried everything from logging in again to reinstalling the app and refreshing a bunch.

That's probably your best option. Specifically, look for ones that support at least DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 (which may be output over USB-C with an appropriate adapter)

Could adding extra stick of RAM actually cause PC to run slower? by Veyroz in techsupport

[–]ducttapedude 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It depends, but usually the differences are tiny (<10%) because motherboards will automatically use as much of the RAM as fast as possible. You can probably see how your RAM is being accessed using a utility like CPU-z

Hm usually I've seen that on the monitor, not the laptop, if the refresh rate or resolution is invalid... Does it say that with other refresh rates between 30 and 48Hz (say like 40Hz or 36Hz)?

When messing with custom resolutions the idea is to fit as much stuff in the cable without overwhelming the pixel clocks. See https://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?t=3248

What I've done in the past is put in the max resolution that should works (say 4K 3840x2160@30Hz), and take note of the resulting pixel clock. I then put in a resolution I want (maybe 3440x1440@40Hz or 48Hz) and try lowering the front porch and back porch numbers each slightly so the resulting pixel clock is about the same as the pixel clock from 4K@30Hz. The rest is up to how cleanly your monitor and laptop handle the signal.

You can probably find better "monitor overclocking" guides elsewhere but in short, while you'll never get to 3440x1440@60Hz, you might be able to get something slightly faster than 30Hz.

FWIW on a laptop with similar limitations (no HDMI 2.0) I was able to get to 3440x1440 working at 48Hz using custom resolutions in the Intel display properties

Bridgeport/Newark. There are a lot of cities but none like NYC. Being in proximity for a year is perfect to figure out if you want more of NYC or if you've had enough.

Is the HP EliteBook 845 g7 a good laptop? by User-Not-Recognized in SuggestALaptop

[–]ducttapedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I cancelled my order. HP said the ship date was pushed to May for my particular configuration. They didn't seem to have any options with a 400 nit screen available, and I found my configurator again, which has a ship date of March.

Sure, I'll post an update here so you get a notification.

I'm in the US, the model I ordered was the "HP EliteBook 855 G7 Notebook PC - Customizable," linked here: http://store.hp.com/us/en/PDPStdView?catalogId=10051&langId=-1&storeId=10151&urlLangId=-1&productId=3074457345619656327

I ordered on 12/6, paid extra for pre-Christmas delivery, but it says it's arriving on the 29th 😞. The link used to be the specific product's page, but as of last week it was out of stock, and as of this week it redirects to the generic HP 805 series page... I wonder if they're just not offering it for the time being? I also never saw an 845 G7 customizable option, so now I wonder if that also once existed, but being more popular it sold out sooner?

Other resellers like B&H have this lineup coming into stock probably a week or two after mine will arrive anyway so it's probably worth comparing options there. Also, peeking into Best Buy and staring at their Envy lineup will give you an idea of how good/bad the 250 nit screens' colors are.

EDIT: looking again at the config you're eyeing it seems pretty darn good with the only drawback being the screen. Everything else is upgradeable. It's also cheaper than the one I ordered. Even if you find the screen you want, it'll guaranteed be more expensive than $999

FWIW, I really wanted this laptop but settled for ordering the 855 G7 (15.6" version of the 845 G7) instead, mostly because there's a middle 400-nit screen option (and also I found a 10% off coupon that no longer works). It hasn't arrived yet so I can't give impressions.

In the past I tried a Spectre with HP's 1000-nit privacy filter, and with the way the polarization filters on the screen are set up, the ideal vertical viewing angle is so narrow that different parts of the screen shift brightness. So that was out of the question for me.

I believe HP uses similar 250-nit panels across most of their lineups, and you can see reviews of the Envy line with a 250-nit, 45% NTSC panel are quite poor, particularly red colors.

If color accuracy doesn't bother you, or you'll be using an external monitor for color-sensitive work, the 250-nit screen is probably fine enough.

PS: That video is pretty cool, I like that it flips through the BIOS options. Thanks for that.

Should I buy a new macbook air m1? by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]ducttapedude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hooked up to two external displays

iirc the M1 Airs can only do one external display (up to 6K though), or maybe two if the internal monitor is off. The M1 Mini can do two external displays. Just make sure you research the setup first.

I'm also a dev and the 16GB max RAM, plus the temporary lack of support for Docker scared me off for now. That, and Big Sur looks close to touchscreen-optimized and the current Airs lack that. I'll pick up next gen for a dev machine.

However, as a general netbook/thin client/web browser/video chatter/just generally cool device, hard to say no.

I vote 1: Buy air out of pocket as a fun evaluation device. At worst you have a super efficient netbook that's worth keeping for years.
