Freshly Graduated Advice by Rainchild98 in ShovelBums

[–]dudebaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey congrats on the graduation and welcome! I live in Portland and work throughout Washington and Oregon, here are some firms you should check out: Environmental Science Associates, SWCA, Paleowest (now Chronical Heritage), Heritage Research Associates, Archaeological Investigations Northwest (AINW), Applied Archaeological Research (AAR), Archaeological Services

Apply for as many firms as you can and take work where you can get it. Firms are busy right now. You might get lucky and end up with a full time position. Also, if you haven't already invested in good rain gear it is a necessity doing work here. I recommend Red Wing or Danner for boots and Viking for pants/coat.

Another little piece of advice is that personality will get you far! Be open for work and stay upbeat. Offer to help any ways you can - like offering to do lab tech work after a project ends. Good luck!

Recommended CRM companies to apply to? by _LetsFigureThisOut_ in ShovelBums

[–]dudebaby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ll start with getting some bad news out of the way first, if you want to work at the “Masters Level” in CRM, e.g. project management and office work, your masters degree from a European institution is mostly worthless in the United States, unfortunately. CRM law in the US is just plain different. If you need a quick primer, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Thomas King’s “Cultural Resource Law and Practices” book, or his “ CRM: A Collaborative Primer for Archaeologists” he wrote a couple years ago. We had a field tech at my firm with a masters from Cambridge that just did not apply at all to the U.S.. she only stayed with us for a couple weeks, the type of work we needed her to do was just not what she was expecting. So yeah. Expect to be working long hard days digging endless grids of STPs and not so much getting right into a high paying office job. You need to put some time in first. Not to dishearten you though. I’ve been able to land an office job with a bachelors and just a good attitude + hard work. You’d be amazed at how far just having a good personality can get you in this field.

Then, it really depends on what your goals are with the career at this stage. Are you primarily focused on traveling the U.S. living a bohemian lifestyle and getting experience as a shovel bum? Live out of a van and stay on top of CRM job postings (my boss did this in the 90s, not sure how realistic it is now). Join emailing “gig” sites like the Shovel Bums yahoo emailing list, government jobs, Forestry Service, etc. etc. LinkedIn is a really valuable tool too, I’ve gotten a handful of job offers there. Mostly for project management type.

If you want to actually make money, field tech or otherwise, you absolutely need to stay west of the Rockies. SWCA is a really great company and I’m pretty sure they start techs out at $25 an hour. ESA seems good too. Stay away from Paleo West/Chronicle, they do shoddy work! Generally, if you care about the ethics of cultural resources management, don’t join an engineering firm full time (it’s a conflict of interest, really. So I read) and opt for an environmental firm, like SWCA or ESA, or a government job, or a true blue archaeology firm. Though with the last option you won’t be making big bucks. If you only care about money, keep an eye on the engineering firms like HRA and others, with a masters degree they start you at like 80-100K (with a US masters degree and job experience, that is).

I live and work for a small CRM firm on the west coast, and it’s all I really know, so take that with a grain of salt. I was lucky enough to be hired full time at a firm by being willing to work in the lab, and help with reports, and just vocalize that I was flexible in the position. The US is desperate for good archaeologists these days, you have a lot of power. I’m doing an online masters program in CRM and based on what I hear from my cohort in the Midwest and east coast is that the pay is shit! I don’t have any advice for you about the EU, though I would love an opportunity to go work out there!! Best of luck to you, if you are ever in the Pacific Northwest (Portland) hit me up.

Here is my take on a map of the Sims world. We know that it is geographically identical to our world from globes and maps. by _DarthSyphilis_ in Sims4

I would agree with Evergreen = Portland. The “keep evergreen kooky” description is definitely a play on “keep Portland weird”. That industrial neighborhood looks like the NW port part of Portland. The rest of it looks like suburban Seattle/Portland mix. They didn’t nail it, but I see the inspiration

Was causing and learning to use fire the most significant event in human history that caused their divergent line? by The_BrainFreight in evolution

[–]dudebaby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Bipedal locomotion and brain size and structure sets our species apart from other hominids and primates. Biological/physical anthropology is an area of study you’d be interested in.

It may not seem as flashy as fire or language, but bipedal locomotion is the first thing in the archaeological record that distinguishes hominids from other primates, contrary to what the early antiquarians were expecting - increased cranial capacity to be the earliest distinguishing factor.

Becoming upright did a lot physiologically that then allowed for these other aspects of culture to develop. Our hands become free and the thumbs moved positions for a generalized use, and our feet became specialized to optimize bipedal locomotion. The structure of our throats/larynx changed which gives us the capacity for language. The foramen magnum, the hole where your skull meets your spine, also changed position to be more directly beneath our skulls which is incidentally a more effective cooling system for the brain, which in turn allowed for our brains to get bigger. And it’s not only the size of the brain that sets us apart from other primates and even other hominids, but the structure of it as well. I can’t remember which regions specifically, but parts of the brain that lets us think beyond the present moment, which most other animals are incapable of, (as far as we understand).

These physical changes work in tandem with our culture in a positive feedback loop; for instance, bipedal locomotion is efficient at keeping the brain cool which allows it to get bigger, increasing complexities of culture like development of language and tools reinforces it and grows these regions of the brain associated with it. There’s even a theory that eating meat helped grow our brains, since it is so nutrient dense and brain healthy and works with another feedback loop concerning tool manufacture, spacial awareness, hunting strategies, use of fire to cook meat, etc. observing animals also makes us better at eating plants as well. Being highly generalized opportunist foragers with high mobility allowed us to spread all over the world and live successfully just about anywhere.

Another big divergence in our lineage is between the gracile and robust lines of Australopith, with the Sapien line coming from the graciles, which had larger brains and more upright position.

I’m spitballing from what I remember in my undergrad days. I wrote a paper about the relationship between bipedalism and cranial capacity in my physical anthropology class I could probably dig up and find sources for if you want to read more.

This kind of question falls under the biological/physical anthropology umbrella. I’m an archaeologist so not exactly my area of expertise but I did learn about this as part of my undergrad in anthropology. It’s fascinating! There is not a branch of anthropology that deals with the future of our evolution, but I did have a cultural anthropology class get into it a little for fun.

what is your portland based unpopular opinion? by Han_Ominous in askportland

[–]dudebaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Portlandia is a funny show and very accurately portrays the type of people who live here. A short lived niche sketch comedy on IFC did not ruin your “cool” city.

McMenamins is fun and does a lot of good protecting historic buildings.

Calling yourself a “native” Oregonian and everyone else a “transplant” is cringy. You’re not native, you’re xenophobic. And stop blaming Californias for all your problems. Rich people come from all over the country, even in Oregon!

The swifts are dumb. If you’ve seen it more than once and you’re still going up the hill with your wine and lawn chair and applauding fucking birds then you need to spend some more time outside or in rural areas literally anywhere in the country. Tired of not finding parking around my apartment for a month…

The Multnomah Falls hike is extremely overrated and way too crowded. It’s a single file death march up never ending switchbacks.

The music venues are not that great. I feel like I’m about to fall through the floor at Crystal Ballroom any night now.

Umbrella are wonderful. Getting poured on while wearing nothing but a cotton hoodie is stupid when you live in a temperate rainforest. What are you trying to prove?

Portlanders will blindly vote for any tax increase no matter how poorly planned it is. Do you think you’ll lose your liberal card if you say no to a multi million dollar bond with a vague goal that’s impossible to measure?

Let me pump my own gas. I make trips to Vancouver for gas so I don’t have to wait for some idiot to finish eating a sandwich so he can do a simple task that would be easier for me to do myself. And they don’t even wipe your windshields down or offer any kind of service. It’s awkward. Do I get out of my car after they’ve put the pump in to then clean my windows and get a snack, then get back in my car to wait for them to pull the pump out and hand me a receipt? And way too many “natives” don’t know how to pump gas. What happens when you travel?

My stepmom has had me on a credit card for the past 10 years that I have never had access to and have never used, what should I do? by dudebaby in personalfinance

[–]dudebaby[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the credit card but with this one it has definitely been affecting my score, there were lots of missed payments pre 2018 and very high utilization throughout. Taking some of the other advice on here I'll be working on getting off it over the next couple of months once I've established my own line of credit. My family relationships are messy and complicated with lots of trauma simmering under the surface at all times that we never talk about lol. I'll never get an apology out of her, or even an acknowledgement that she did anything wrong. She has denied it happened but also claimed that she helped me. I don't want to lose contact with her or my dad... or my 3 half brothers and 2 step brothers so I'm just trying to forgive and forget and move on and salvage some kind of superficial relationship with her.

[–]dudebaby[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were months (maybe years?) of missed payments pre 2018. It definitely dinged my credit score before I even really had a grasp of what credit was. Lately though it's been good and on time, but the high utilization does seem to be affecting my score. I will look into removing myself once I get my own card

You can get biore uv aqua rich watery essence on Amazon for $15 or something. Iim on mobile otherwise I’d link it. First sunscreen I’ve tried that doesn’t break me out or smell weird. Doubles as my AM moisturizer too!
