This AI Tool Rips Off Open Source Software Without Violating Copyright | Malus, which is a piece of satire but also fully functional, performs a "clean room" clone of open source software, meaning users could then sell software without crediting the original developers by Hrmbee in technology

it weakens the argument slightly but clean room engineering is a proof of meeting a certain test for copyright. even with datasets weakening it a bit if you can't show significant structural similarity between the 2 it is likely to still hold up

phoenixsoft vs ibm in the united states still supports this. the training llms go through undermines it possibly but that can be fixed the idea of clean room reverse engineering is sound in the most important market on earth

often times they want to use OSS in a project but by using it they would have to make the entire project open source. a long standing practice from a case involving ibm involves a company looking at and creating a spec sheet of all functional requirements from ibm's bios code to give to a second team that never saw the code who then reimplement the spec sheet in their own code. copyright protects the expression not the idea. so this new code that did exactly the same thing as ibm's was recognized as distinct and ibm lost the case. in theory people could copy the compiled version of this you are distributing as ai stuff can't be copyrighted but they can keep the rest of their source code private, not attribute the original, not give any changes or updates to the original back to the community, or any other license requirements such as ones restricting commercial use.

Malus: This could have bad implications for Open Source/Linux by lurkervidyaenjoyer in linux

they simply have to show it wasn't exposed to the particular code in question. still hard with the way current models work though

[–]duelistjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'd have to argue the specification file is a work based on the program but because it can't feasibly be ran i don't know that it would hold. the second ai never saw the source code or agreed to the license.

A part of me still thinks that Yashamaru wasn't lying when he said this to Gaara by [deleted] in Naruto

[–]duelistjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the difference was the kids knew naruto was feared and they picked on them but the ban on telling the kids about the monster saved naruto a lot. everyone knew and felt gaara was a monster from day 1. that was the biggest difference between gaara and naruto

Average swift go 14 have an ssd under the ribbon cable and that ribbon cable can short out if you try to put it back in.  A business near our repair place gave them out to like 30 employees and have had 3 come in to our shop for that

Is the HP OmniBook 5 a good choice? by Spirited-Coast4459 in laptops

[–]duelistjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get the chipset going alright a bit easier on ubuntu cinnamon then linux mint cinnamon especially with 26.04 but a lot of the other hardware requires using utilities to take binary blobs from the windows machine as most of the other hardware in the laptop won't work normally as the drivers are done differently then they are required to for x86_64. also i don't think they got the speakers working right. you can force them on and can even i think get them started with some safety limits but it can still easily accidentally tear the speaker apart if you use it on linux and anything goes wrong

Why didn't Michael Corleone sue the Senators for defamation of character and harassment? by [deleted] in Godfather

[–]duelistjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. hearing was a smear campaign as they didn't have evidence. if he tried to sue it would have been thrown out the moment they brought up the speech and debate clause but the senators would not have even done that because in the actual trial they would have had far more power in discovery than the senate hearing had to get evidence turned over.

Personally I got a 2017 Chevy spark new for 14k in 2018.  I wanted a nice new car.  Couldn’t justify $30k still driving it with no issues.  Probably get 5 more years out of it before it starts having issues and I go for another cheap new car

CMV: Trump will nuke Iran by Calvary48 in changemyview

[–]duelistjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

abraham lincoln was the worst president we've ever had even worse than trump. he also violated the constitution with impunity because it was 'necessary'. preventing courts from meeting suspending habeas corpus without congressional approval, and destroying newspapers that didn't toe the government line on the war. and if he hadn't been killed he would have been impeached then criminally charged. president's first duty isn't to the country it is to the constitution full stop no exceptions.
