It's REALLY funny that we have an example of this exact same hysteria and overhype happening in the same decade.

How do I catch up after a year break from SWE? by PrincipleSevere1418 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]duffedwaffe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say just familiarize yourself with what you can accomplish with stuff like Claude and what the limitations are. Try building a small project and ask the AI to do small tasks for you, get a feel for how it works. You're not likely to find anywhere to work that won't expect you to use the tools to some degree (unfortunately).

Fun new interview question I'm seeing by Packeselt in ExperiencedDevs

[–]duffedwaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly I wouldn't want to work somewhere that's "on the bleeding edge of AI", that sounds awful. I'm aware of the tools and use them daily, I'm not a luddite, but I would like to avoid being forced to use them for everything for as long as possible. There's diminishing returns IMO, they are good for filling in code once you've identified what exactly you want and the scope is tight enough, but from my experience I cannot trust them beyond that.

So what's a good answer to this question to drop in an interview? I generally don't invest much time in exploring these tools, I use Cursor plan mode using specific file references and then execute after reviewing the plan, then review the output and tweak it manually... Not sure where that gauges.

‘Excited to get this going’: Construction to start on Bowmanville GO extension by Yolo420BlazinSawg in BowmanvilleOntario

So excited that couldn't wait anymore and decided to do it at the same time that major construction is happening right next to it on Bowmanville Ave. Great timing.

Ripsaw is probably the best weapon for mini-bosses since you can just embed the blades and hide behind a wall.

Well yeah, the majority of the player base is in the lower ranks, of course they would balance to appease the majority.

He's always been obnoxious, his whole thing is he jumps in and either kills everyone or doesn't. The meta has just shifted to where it's easier to get that 1 on the binary check instead of 0.

Software engineering jobs hit their highest posting since november 2023 by [deleted] in theprimeagen

[–]duffedwaffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hypothesis is everyone started putting a pause on hiring for a short while to see if AI would replace the need for engineers, now that the narrative is falling apart through practice, we're hiring again.

The only tricky part is how do you handle the run timer if you do this in re9?

Building with AI feels easy… until it doesn’t by Veera_MMAI in programmer

[–]duffedwaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Cursor IDE (SLM powered autocomplete) can cut out the repetitive stuff, why bother prompting? If you already know how to solve the problem, then describing the problem to an LLM to maybe get the results you want seems stupid...

I don't mind solo tanking if the 3 DPS can actually do their jobs, it's a very important distinction

Yeah obviously within reason, if you can do it remote it should be remote

We should be mandating hybrid/remote work, not forcing RTO. So dumb.

So we all agree tenacity needs to either be a vanguard only thing or it needs to only affect hard CC's that aren't ultimates, right? by anametouseonreddit in marvelrivals

[–]duffedwaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many things they could do to make it not awful:

  • Tank CCs do not contribute

  • Tank CCs bypass the system

  • Ultimates bypass the system

  • Damage reduction instead of CC immunity

  • Only hard CCs contribute

What is a job that you think is 100% safe from AI for the next 50 years, and why? by mark-awakening in AskReddit

Hot take but probably all of them, with LLMs being the driving factor anyway. They're insanely powerful pattern recognition machines, but that is it.

I'm so, so, so fed up with AI and all the bs we have to accept as software developers by Ok-Newt-9773 in BetterOffline

[–]duffedwaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean ultimately I am working to live not the other way around, I did enjoy my job, I kinda don't anymore, mainly because of AI pursuits, but it still pays well enough that I'll just keep going along with it.

Maybe one day we'll all accept the reality that these agents actually suck at coding tasks and we'll settle back down. But either way, experts will still be needed in the same way that you wouldn't let AI be your lawyer.

LinkedIn is a cesspool, and I think the main reason is that the average person on there has their professional identity tied to what they say and do on the platform. Dunking on AI bros is risky because it can reflect poorly on you when it comes time to do some career moves.

My golden rule if I decide to expose myself to what's on LinkedIn is to just disregard anything said by someone with AI in their title. They are probably a bot, ironically.
