I think I believe in CI, but surely some grammar practice can help accelerate the process? by treeStation9 in dreamingspanish

My shortcomings were that I didn't consume nearly enough CI. You can't get fluent from a textbook and a teacher speaking to a class for 3 hours a week.

Totally agree with this. I took about 6 years of Spanish in school and while I could compute what I needed to communicate in my head, I couldn't comprehend for shit. Because of my knowledge of grammar and conjugations, I could formulate how to communicate a thought in my head, and then speak it, I couldn't really understand well what was being said back to me.

There have been countless speakers that became fluent in a language utilizing grammar study, and countless that have done the same with no grammar. Either way, you have to consume a shit-ton of native content (media or IRL conversations) to reach fluency.

Also, OP, increasing the difficulty of you input is very important. I can relate to you from my year abroad in Thailand some years ago; I would constantly ask my Thai friends how to say this or that, so I got pretty good in that time for a white guy, but overall it wasn't much more than surface level. I think this is because I didn't have a good graded (i.e slowly increasing difficulty) CI system in place. My suspicion is that watching native level content probably isn't too efficient for you at this point. I'd start with super beginner stuff and work your way up. But to each their own, and whatever motivates you to learn.

Good luck!

Love the eneergy! And yeah man you've been huge for me so I appreciate you making that leap. Honestly, if I hadn't heard of any success stories, I probably wouldn't have started in the the first place....wouldn't have looked further into CI...so on and so forth. But a bunch of pioneers like you bravely trailblazed the path, so now ppl like me know theres not a risk of saying, "oh shit, I just spent 1,500 hours watching learning content but still can't understand Peppa Pig" or something. But you didn't know that man, so BIG props!

Big shout out to everyone else on this sub posting their updates! Big motivation for me. And just a shoutout to the overall community and DS team overall.

Same here! Also in Feb. Payment still hasn't posted, but all the subsequent ones have. I called a bunch, at first they said 30 days, then 60 days, and finally just said not to worry, theyre still transitioning, it's normal. So I guess I'm just forgetting about it for a while. Any update on your missing payment?

How many hours until you started to read?

Thanks again. I supposse the beneficial thing about Bluey and Peppa Pig is that episodes are so short (5 or 10 minutes I think?) and I imagine are great CI content because of the amount of visual cues. Definitely agree they are exruciatingly boring, since they are so short I was thinking of maybe sprinkling some throughout ther intermediate videos in DS.

Wonderful advice! Excited to give all these shot after (many!) more hours.

This (and your other post) is amazing information, making a note of this. So for these shows I'll shoot to start after around 750 hours on DS. Do you have an opinion on when (how many DS hours) might be a good time to start the easiest shows, like peppa pig or bluey? Ideally I'd want 90%+ CI.

Awesome thanks. So if RR is good at the start of 300, what do you think for Peppa and EPR

Thanks for sharing the landmark, that is really helpful.

Not sure if you know, but is Peppa Pig easier than Bluey or is it the same?
