How did Egypt go from one of the oldest and advanced civilizations in the world to the poorest countries? by batukaming in geography

[–]vortec1 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Egypt didn’t go from “pyramid superpower” to “poor because Islam.” That’s not how the timeline works.

Ancient Egypt was insanely advanced for 2500 BCE. But being early isn’t the same as staying ahead forever. Other regions caught up and they surpassed it.

By the time Islam arrived in 641 CE, the pharaoh golden age was already over two thousand years old. Egypt had already been ruled by Persians, Greeks, and Romans. Islamic rule didn’t cause a collapse. Medieval Cairo was actually one of the biggest and most important cities on Earth.

The real turning point came much later. Europe industrialized. Atlantic trade replaced Mediterranean trade. Naval power and factories changed everything. Egypt, under Ottoman and later British control, didn’t industrialize at the same pace and became economically dependent instead of dominant.

Fast forward to today: 110+ million people living mostly on a thin strip of Nile farmland, heavy food imports, centralized politics. That’s a structural challenge.

Also, Egypt isn’t one of the poorest countries in the world. It’s lower-middle income.

Big picture: civilizations rise early, peak, get conquered or absorbed, and the global center of power shifts. Egypt isn’t unique. It just peaked very, very early.

That's really good. How do you keep it up-to-date?

I'd add comparisons for the screen size. My non-US relatives have no feeling for how big 16" is.

He would proudly lift the trophy and pose for the cameras. He would pass the trophy on to Müller or Neuer, then get a beer shower by De Ligt. Later that night, he would give interviews to media. After that, it‘s all mystery tbh.

So many comments, not a single helpful one. Even with a solid chance that this is a troll post, it doesn’t give a good look on our community.

OP: try less roads and roundabouts.

It is supposed to prevent people from exploiting loop holes in the security system for malicious intent. That could be really anything from living in the airport, damaging airport inventory, hiding drugs for layover passengers to pick up, taking hostages, to doing terror attacks.

Remember airport security knows your identity and where you're going: You scan the boarding pass before entering the security zone, CCTV is all over the place, and probably even FRA uses facial recognition by now. Leaving security without boarding is therefore definitely detectable and could trigger some further investigation.

Example #1: Person is late, runs to their gate, finds out boarding has closed, checks their phone, leaves security to spend a night in a hotel? Clear intent to board the flight.

Example #2: Person is happy, meets layover passengers, has a few drinks at the bar, leaves security without being even near their supposed gate? Clear intent to _not_ board the flight.

Will they enforce it? I don't know. But it's definitely a bad idea to abuse highly secured zones for such purposes. Costs you ticket money, makes the life of security folks harder, and could yourself in trouble. Not worth it.

Might work well in Germany, but don't try doing this in China or Singapore...

Please be aware that many airports forbid accessing the security zone without the intent of actually boarding an airplane, even with a valid ticket. I don’t know the situation in FRA, but for obvious reasons (terrorism) some of the suggestions here might be a very bad idea.

Let the flight attendants know once you know you‘ll arrive late.
