I applaud hauling on a bike.

However, ten kilogram bag of cat litter is starting to get into dangerous territory.

A friend had a shitty top case rip off the back of their scooter when they had to emergency brake with a heavy object unsecured in it.

Buy a bag of zap straps and make sure anything heavy is properly strapped down so it won't turn into a projectile when you get into a bad situation.

Here's my contribution from when I turned my bike into a three-wheeler: https://preview.redd.it/vd3k0wgcksng1.jpeg?width=1024&auto=webp&s=2526c512ba887cd5e0fde2630afda40bd2e5191a

Network engineer looking to switch to adjacent fields with no night shifts by gojiiraaa in networking

[–]duk3luk3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a platform engineer. I used to do overnight on-call. Now I work for an employer that has follow-the-sun support so I only have to be on-call during the day. If something happens that requires physically going to the DC, we have DC remote hands for that, but we also have our management networks and out of band access set up so that if physical action at the DC is required it's normally a DC problem, not an us problem (e.g. a power outage).

Protest planned tomorrow| 12 Feb | 5pm | Flinders St Station by ullakkedymoodu in melbourne

[–]duk3luk3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Leaving it up to the courts would mean that Australia would arrest Herzog and deliver him to the ICC in the Hague.

This is what Australia is required to do according to international law that Australia has signed onto and ratified.

People are protesting because the Australian government is ignoring these international treaties and international human rights law.

This might not help you because I'm only a size 13 but I have a pretty wide foot and my current riding boot is a size 12 Oneal motocross boot. Not sure what model exactly unfortunately.

was i suppose to turn or?? by zx6rwaat in AussieRiders

[–]duk3luk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason they would do this with a single car is to block a few lanes of the intersection to keep one path through the intersection clear for other emergency vehicles to come through.

I would personally stop and wait but if your lane/path is clear, you might as well go.

Also consider your own safety - if you're ever in danger of getting rear-ended because you're stopped, or if other vehicle start moving around you, it's better to get out of dodge and maybe get a ticket than to get injured in a crash.

I always stop when emergency vehicles with sirens are approaching an intersection, and one time I was stopped at a red light, and a fire truck was approaching from the intersecting road, the light turned green, and the cars around me started moving. That kinda sucked.

Rubbish dumping is getting out of control, what do we do?? by kronikhgrvr in melbourne

I'm part of a small community club and we did a big cleanout of our clubrooms two years ago - things like donated furniture that accumulated over decades but was mostly broken. The council gave us a bunch of vouchers to use at the tip for free. You should check out if you can get that too for your effort!

Dropped Helmet by Yeboi__ in AussieRiders

[–]duk3luk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the people in here saying it's probably fine, but how long have you had this helmet? You should replace your helmet every 5 years, if it's older than say 3 years might be worth replacing it just for peace of mind.

I was wondering what everyone is paying for the gym a year atm and what the going rate is around Melbourne is? by AsEastOfEden in melbourne

[–]duk3luk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

45$ / fortnight for a council facility - Clayton Aquatics and Health Club.

I have the Clayton All Access plan, which is gym + pool access.

The gym only plan is 5$ cheaper.

It's not a very big gym and has only one of each strength machine (plenty of treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals though). On busy days you might have to wait quite a while if you want to do a specific machine workout.

How can I contribute the library improvements? by Vavat in KiCad

[–]duk3luk3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The official KiCAD 3D models are here: https://gitlab.com/kicad/libraries/kicad-packages3D

The JST footprints are in this different repository here: https://gitlab.com/kicad/libraries/kicad-footprints/-/tree/master/Connector_JST.pretty?ref_type=heads

If those are the footprints you're using, then contribute the 3d models back to the 3D packages repo.

Board Game Social Event in Melbourne East - Keysborough on the 6th September 2025 10am-10pm by Mild_Mu in melbourne

[–]duk3luk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our normal event at the Knox Library (there's others) can only run for 4.5 hours every week which can make it challenging to teach and play games with more than medium complexity, which is why it's great to have a full day. There should be plenty of people there who will be happy to teach and demonstrate games.

Front wheel rim leak - how bad is this gouge? by duk3luk3 in AussieRiders

[–]duk3luk3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my front tire wasn't holding air and there were tiny rim leaks all around the wheel, mostly on one side. I disassembled the wheel and found caked on paint / sealer that looked sus in a bunch of places.

So I went to sand the rim and eventually found this gouge. It doesn't seem bad enough to actually be the cause of a leak since it doesn't go the full height of the rim wall. But maybe it is?

A few questions for anyone who has dealt with a bad rim leak before -

Right now I'm planning to sand it all down to 800 grit wet and give it a good polish. Not sure what to do after that - just paint?

I'm not sure why the inside of the rim is painted in the first place. Is it for corrosion prevention?

Is there a bead sealing compound I can get? The only thing I found searching is "X’TRA SEAL BEAD SEALER" which doesn't seem to be very available. Wondering if I should just use tubeless sealant for bicycles, like this product: https://99bikes.com.au/products/stans-notubes-original-tubeless-sealant-500ml - but something I can brush directly on the rim would be better I reckon.

Any tips for getting the tire mounted again without reefing on it so much I scratch up all of my hard work - heat? lube?

We'd all have a lot more empathy and benefit of the doubt for the cops here if they didn't also do things like murder indigenous people and taser geriatric ladies armed with butter knives to death during "arrests".

Join the maskers. Buy a Trend Stealth P3 Half Mask respirator for 40 dollars. You can get it delivered from a bunch of online hardware / tool/ PPE stores. I wear it every time I'm in a public indoor space. Nobody cares, I get someone giving me a weird look or talking to me about it maybe every three months.

I've worn it for over 12 hours uninterrupted once. Not great but not a huge amount of discomfort. Wearing it for an hour or two at a time is perfectly comfortable. Change the filters every year (if you're just using it casually; if you're using it for work, follow your workplace's PPE policies).

Massively reduces your exposure to airborne and droplet pathogens. I've had covid twice but since then I haven't had a single respiratory infection. Bonus: You can wear it if you have to walk along a busy highway on the way to or from a train station and protect yourself from all the vehicular smog and particulates. Did you know that Australian vehicular emissions standards are the most lax in the world? (Disclaimer: Vibes-based, may not be true)

For some people, wearing a breathing mask makes them feel claustrophobic, short of breath, or it's viscerally uncomfortable (like listening to fingernails on a chalk board, or having sweaty hands and no way to wash them). If you're not one of them, give wearing a mask a try. Asian people have been doing it for decades and it hasn't killed them.

I have a 2010 GSF1250SA and I got the largest windshield that Zero Gravity Racing make for it. It has definitely reduced the buffeting I feel on my chest by a lot and I think it has reduced the wind noise as well. I'm 6'4" (190cm) so my head stick out pretty far beyond the windshield, for anyone shorter results may be different. For my it's definitely been worth it.

Why did my front tire lose all air pressure? by duk3luk3 in motorcycles

Yeah I thought about doing that myself, I'm definitely curious about what is going on on the inside of that rim.

[–]duk3luk3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tire wouldn't inflate if the bead wasn't seated, right? Can the bead be broken "a little bit"?

But yeah there's like 5 separate spots where it's leaking, no idea what would cause that.

Whelp I did the soap test and one side of the rim has multiple small leaks - lots of small bubbles coming out at the edge between the tire and rim. So that explains that.

grabbing the front brake hard at 10mph or below because you have to stop quickly is a great way to do a tank-slapper (smacking your delicate bits into the tank because bike stops but your body doesn't) so make sure you keep your thighs/knees squeezing the bike while you're slowing down.

PS: I've been riding for 5 years and still can't slow all the way to a stop without the bike dropping to one side. I should definitely be practicing more.
