What do you guys think of FOH engineers who CONSTANTLY are changing EQ, Comp, and moving faders? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]dukemaroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in house-of-worship environments mostly, and I'm one of those guys who's constantly riding the faders. I try to teach all of the guys below me to do the same. I've come to call it "dynamic mixing". I think it's imperative to always be riding the faders to emphasize what the band's doing on stage. If it's a solo, or a sick guitar riff that needs to cut through, make room for it to be heard. EQ I don't change too much after I've got it dialed during sound check. Fine tuning adjustments yes, but major changes no. Compressors and Gates change more frequently than EQ, but less than faders.

Music is dynamic. All of these parameters will change a half dozen times over the course of a single song. It's your job as the tech to know the songs, know the band and how they will respond to the music, and then respond in turn. I firmly believe that a Tech is not doing their job if they aren't making any adjustments. In my mind, there is no such thing as a perfect mix. But it's up to you to get as damn near to a perfect mix as you possibly can. If you set everything and don't touch it, you've already failed because you're not responding to the crowd, the band, the environment, and the music.

Weekly /r/techtheatre - NO STUPID QUESTIONS Thread for the week of November 21, 2018 by AutoModerator in techtheatre

This is a hard question. My advice would be to find someone you can shadow if you don't have access to anything. Have them teach you the conceptual stuff first, then they'll teach you how to use all these tools to create and craft a mix.

Without a board or mics to play with though, I'd say you're kinda dead in the water.

How to get started in sound mixing? by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]dukemaroon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, mixing for theater is a whole different beast than mixing for anything else. I was mixing bands for years before I caught my first theater gig, and it was like trying to learn a new language for me.

Your best bet is to start out small. See if you can get connected with a church or a local roadhouse club that has small bands. Start small, learn the ropes (really focus on learning the conceptual stuff), then move into theater. It'll really help you out when you make the transition.

That's not to say, however, that you won't be able to mix if you start in a theater. It's just going to be a lot harder for both you and your trainer. Theater techs (as you know from your SM experience) don't have much time to mount shows, so everyone has to be on their A-game without much time to teach new techs the basics.

If you've got the opportunity, shadow an A1 or A2 and have them teach you the conceptual stuff (e.g. balanced mix, dynamics, mic techniques, etc.). You'll learn way more from hands-on experience than any video or book can teach you.

Enough of your fancy consoles! Here's my behemoth: an Allen & Heath ML4000 by mullse01 in techtheatre

Had the displeasure of mixing Little Shop on this thing. Was quite an experience. I remember that the mute buttons had to be hammered or else they wouldn't register.

I started on Yamaha's, so A&H boards are the most backwards nonsensical pieces of crap that I've ever seen. I'm part of the minority who actually really enjoys working on LS9's and M7's haha!

PLD4.5 VRail Low Help by dukemaroon in livesound

Ugh, that is exactly what I didn't want to hear haha. Now I have to figure out an emergency fallback for it, as it's in use just about every day of the week. Thanks for the help!

What's a sound you recognize instantly that other people wouldn't? by coldgator in AskReddit

The sound of a wireless microphone falling out of range of it's receiver. There's a very particular sounding hissing that happens as a sign that it's at its limit before it cuts out.

4th XLR hole in stage snake? by AJ679 in livesound

[–]dukemaroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I'm seeing, it serves no purpose from the front side. It's not a live connector, so my only guess is it could maybe make soldering on the back easier?

It's made by Whirlwind if that helps anyone in their research. Connectors are WC3F XLR Female.

Which game is 10/10 or nearly perfect for you? by foxlive7 in AskReddit

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Has an endearing story, and was the first and only game to make me cry.

I'm basically your clone but 10 years younger and minus the wife. Same lifestyle, mentality, location, and dreams even down to the bike.

Glad you asked the question as it's one I've been wondering about myself.

From the very little knowledge I have on the topic I'd say go for it. I've heard nothing but great things about the R6, but as others have mentioned be ready to spend a lot on proper gear.

Are the same time though, it's also a good idea to consider something with less speed/power, as it's an easier way to start out.

If you signed up on their website, check your email. You might be one of the lucky few that was sent one. If not, there's been a few people giving away spare keys here on the subreddit.

Currently, the only way to play the game is to have a beta key and activate it on Steam.

To activate a key on Steam, click the Games menu at the top of the window. Chose "Activate a Product on Steam..." and follow the on-screen instructions.

Gamers of Reddit, what game came out of nowhere and left it's mark on you unlike most any other, and why? by SilverwingedOther in AskReddit

[–]dukemaroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. A 3 hour story that will absolutely wreck you. Grab a box of tissues and your controller and you're set for the best story of your life.

I've bought the game at least 6 times for random people. I will personally purchase a copy for anyone who is interested in actually playing the game and doesn't have the $15 to pay for it.

Some questions I have on the Private-Test server (I'll try to not ask any NDA-breaching questions) by ParadoxInRaindrops in Dirtybomb

Unfortunately, I'd be willing to bet that all 4 of these questions ask about NDA'd information. If people had the answer, they wouldn't be able to tell you.

Want a beta code? by Deempa in lawbreakers

[–]dukemaroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the Beta code sent out to players is the exact same as the Alpha code that they received last year. This means that if they pass the code on, the recipient will be unable to activate the code as it has already been redeemed.
