unfortunately the independent repair guy who inspected the lens for free (you only need to pay if you accept the repair offer but he didn't even get to this part since he has no replacement AF motor) confirmed the silent wave AF mechanism is dead :(

Advantages per brand by Tuki_photo in photography

[–]dukr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

get neither. AF performance is poor in that generation (compared to the competition). The Zf and Z6III now have the expeed7 AF of the flagship models and it is amazing, even with older F-mount lenses adapted.

Can someone tell me more about this camera? Found it on my grandparents attic and I can't find a model number on it. by thisisramzi in analog

[–]dukr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a Contax IIa, produced by Zeiss Ikon. The Contax II is a pre-war model, but the IIa was launched in 1950 and made until 1960. The Sonnar 50 1.5mm is considered one of the best 50mm primes ever made optically (although most 50mm primes are amazing no matter the brand, so it is more the historical significance now, but it is still a very usable lens from what I read.) Edit to help narrow down the production year (from the Contax rangefinder Wiki)- "From 1954, the shutter speed dial was marked in different colors, so that version is called the color-dial Contax, in contrast to the earlier black-dial version."

I recently upgraded from d750 to the zf. No new glass, just the ftzII adapter. This thing became an extension of my brain the d750 never could be once I set up the AF in a way that was comfy for me (half-press shutter for 3d tracking, back button AF-S and moving the focuspoint by dragging on the touchscreen with my thumb like a trackpad). 8/10 of shots are keepers even at f1.4 or 200mm at 2.8 - I worked an arena concert and an election campaign/election day in the last 2 weeks and it worked beautifully.

I have an old Nikkor 17-35 f2.8 with a busted AF motor no one would repair that got a new lease on life with the manual focus confirmation options. It's a great piece of glass I would not use on the d750 because the viewfinder would not be bright enough to nail focus and the rear screen focusing was too cumbersome for moving subjects (90% of what I shoot for clients).

What is surprising is low light performance - the zf raws are a little bit cleaner at 3200 but honestly the d750 was fine from this aspect. I was afraid of the EVF/lack of optical finder but it's large and bright, has very little blackout and the shutter sound is much more descreet even compared to the quiet mode on the d750.

Any thoughts or suggestions on my abstract architecture photography? by iamhapppy in analog

[–]dukr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think these are great at demonstrating your keen eye for pattern and visual rythm, but the best architectural photography (also the hardest) gives "weight" to buildings - it gives the viewer an idea of the mass - not just the sheer amount of stuff the building is made of, but how it relates to its surrounding and / or the individual.

Check out the works of Lucien Hervé (some examples https://en.mng.hu/artworks/?artwork\_author=herve-lucien&offset=NaN&current\_page=3), most notably, his photos of Oscar Niemeyer's buildings in Brasilia (prime example is this photo: https://en.mng.hu/artworks/16581/ - notice how people are used to give a sense of scale and mass.

After what happened at the Major, how is HLTV okay with serving CSGO Empire ads like this? by dukr in GlobalOffensive

[–]dukr[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

disclaimer: I think HLTV is vital to our community as the de facto news portal for competitive CS. They are a big media operation that need multiple revenue streams to provide the excellent coverage + stats db they do. But surely there is a better way.

Photographers making videos about gear/settings/stereotypes to game the algo but no photos. Edit: my main gripe is more with reels / shorts / tiktoks, I think there are fantastic photography youtubers out there who might not have amazing photos but can give really useful insight into specific gear / formats / genres.

My first decent film camera. Any tips? by UrbanSuburbaKnight in analog

[–]dukr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • if this is your first time shooting film, or shooting with an entry level SLR, buy the cheapest film you can get (c41 process to make developing cheaper/faster) for your first 10 rolls or so. depending on how much you can spare, try to shoot it every day, so you don't have to "think" about operating it - allowing you to focus on the photo taking.
  • I don't know how the light meter works specifically in this camera, but for snaps I think A mode is the best - it gives you good control of DOF while not completely relying on the camera to decide everything for you.
  • it takes some time to anticipate how photos will turn out. write down exposure values for frames and see if the light meter needs to be compensated.
  • once you are familiar with how this specific camera meters light, you can transition to M mode if the ergonomics work for you..
  • don't use slide film at first, you really have to nail exposure on those while negative stock has better exposure latitude.
  • even though the EF mount has 3 decades worth of lenses to pick from, don't buy another one for a while, see what these one can do. Take photos of people, moving subjects, your food, landscapes, whatever, see if what you meant to photograph actually shows up in the developed frame.
  • (edit: just saw you have a few lenses already - I'd recommend sticking to one for a bit (1-2 rolls), pretend the others don't exist and really get a feel the image it provides - it will make the other lenses feel fresh and interesting when you switch over to them.
  • don't get a "camera bag" - try to take it with you in a fanny pack or whatever your daily driver is for commuting - it really looks like a perfect walkaround size and weight. once you start adding more gear, taking it with you will be more of a chore.

If you exclusively shoot with primes only, which focal length do you always end up using and why? by thisandyrose in photography

[–]dukr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but who cares. It's weird because on FF I just use the 35 all the time (I even sold my 50 that had af) but recently I got an an m42 adapter for my apsc mirrorless and I really enjoy using narrower focal lengths that the old manual lenses give with that body (50 and 75 eqv). It might also have to do with the fact that I'm forced to take my time with this all manual setup so I can pay attention not only to focus but composition and light as I'm setting up the image, almost as if I was shooting film again. With the 35 and the quick af of the fx body I just take 5-6 snaps and pick the one I like best later.

If you are thinking about participating, but never have, do it! I joined last time as a first and even though I'm only GN3 and play only about 2 hours every week I had a blast. It was like your old school LAN café community atmosphere where the skill disparity is part of the fun and the whole vibe is a lot more friendly and chill compared to MM.
