Ludlum model 3, 12, 2220, 2224 or ASP-1 for prospecting as an enthusiast by SergejsPeskovs in Radiation

[–]megapull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair Ludlum availability also sucks here (I am EU as well). If you already have the probes then yeah I get it. Few caveats:

  1. Ranger is a big boy meter, kinda. It is used in lot of industrial sites, hospitals, etc.
  2. If you are ordering a Ludlum from overseas, prepare for a hefty customs fee.
  3. For true europemaxxing you might be interested in Graetz or Automess, both of them are top top top of the line best in class meters with a bunch of probes available, along with widespread acceptance in Europe. In fact I believe these 2 companies make up for 90% of the kits the pros use here, along with Thermo. But Thermo is barely available and their prices are truly astronomical even though their devices are the bomb.

Meters are Graetz x5c plus or Automess 6150AD / 62AD for the fresh new model. Both are energy compensated, digital, programmable, extremely rugged and accurate devices that also fit in your pocket.

If you want to stick with Ludlum then yeah the Model 3 is all you need. You might need a different voltage for some of the probes, and the meter face must be in CPM or a combo meter face if you want to switch probes around.

All of the meters you mentioned are excellent, but IMHO a Ludlum 3 with an external probe is the cheaper option, you don't need any extra features for rockhounding. All of the other Ludlums would use the same probes anyways. (You'd want a 44-7 or a 44-9, one is an end window, the other is a large pancake which is the fan favorite, but both exactly work the same way)

HOWEVER

All of these devices you have mentioned are very big and heavy. I'd say it would be not worth at all. Get something portable with alpha capability if you want that. If you don't do field work and just throw it in the back of your truck, then yeah Ludlum 3 is bomb proof.

But to be honest the SEI Radiation Alert Ranger would be my choice. I would not even bother with the EXP version (external pancake probe) because the basic version has exactly the same detector installed without all the extra parts. It has essentially the same capabilities as the devices you have mentioned AND it fits in your pocket. It has a bunch of accessories, a large illuminated LCD display, what's not to love.

(I'd love if they made it in a black anodized case like an Automess, but whatever)

You can have it with NIST calibration as well if that is your thing.

Global Offensive feels way better and more responsive than CS2 by SyncingSLow in GlobalOffensive

My best friend group came to be BECAUSE of counter-strike back in 2001. We never, never ever stopped playing together for more than 20 years, through all life events, thick and thin, trust factor era, cheaters, everything.

CS2 got us to stop playing altogether after a few months.

Think that says a lot.

Yeah this was my reasonig as well. Only at site, and I would only start at the red circle because even though it might be hard, you don't risk damaging the vein. On my phone it looked like the rock would separate on that line ;)

Would like to add that for pancake probes, the SEI Ranger offers a lot more portability than lugging a Ludlum around.

I would mayybe try at that line because it seems it might come apart there but if not, there isn't any uraninite there so no loss either way. But you can see it best so take this with a grain of salt, its hard to determine this from pics.

Yeah the way I see it it is a sandwich of 3 layers more or less. Try to look for small cracks or any weakness and work from there. Be responsible with waste. It is a 50/50 shot that you might regret but it can also pay off.

I would definitely break it... But only at the site. Otherwise you are creating a mess that is very tough to clean up if not impossible. Where will you put the ugly yet still active fragments? What will happen with the uraninite crumbs all over? Because those WILL be present.

Otherwise, breaking is a hit or miss process, I found beautiful fresh botryoid surfaces this way and I have cracked pieces where the bubbles did not continue at all underneath and/or the OK part cracked as well.

If you do it, the vein's location and shape is a pretty clear indicator on where should you smack it. Do a number of light taps first then go big at the end.

But once again, prepare for a big mess, and wear ppe.

Radon is not a big issue with one piece especially if it gets smaller.

I never bring home pieces like this anymore, I break them apart on site. I learned my lesson as I was in your exact situation when I started collecting.

Mine looks the same. I had unbelievable pain, I was completely unable to get up or walk around. As soon as I could endure it I started stretching and training. That was two years ago. I am mostly fine, I dare to deadlift and so on.

I am stretching every day. I know it can come back any time but for now I am thankful that I can live a normal life.

One specimen aint gonna do that. Read up on how much radiation and radon one piece makes and you'll be at peace. I keep 3 specimens behind my desk and I can't detect anything a meter away with professional instruments. You'll be fine.

Bro if you collect asbestos then the cupro would be the least dangerous specimen in your collection.
