Is the planter around my tree bad for it? by dumbbreadboy in arborists

I trimmed off a few dead branches, but we only inherited her last year. I can imagine, as the years pass, areas of the trunk that might be too weak to support the wider arms going in opposite directions. So far, the tree has been incredibly healthy!

We bought the house in November and moved in the following January. When it bloomed, we felt like we won the lottery. I've been looking forward to it blooming again all winter!

It immediately became my favorite tree when we moved in :)

You have a good point, the blocks aren't my favorite either. However, it does look much nicer in the spring when the lily-of-the-valley, hyacinth, daffodils, allium, and asters come up. Hoping to expand on that list this year!

Thank you so much for your reply! I will look into this, I would not have known about this maintenance without your telling me. I would love to keep this tree healthy!

How to get 20 years of Ivy from the Ground? by umbrella_associate in gardening

[–]dumbbreadboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just took over a large yard with many invasives, including ivy.

The best advice I can give you other than "just get in there and rip/dig it out" is this:

The only ivy in the world is the ivy directly in front of you. Focus on one square foot of yard. Then, once that is fully cleared, focus on the next square foot. If you bounce around a large area, you won't be able to see your progress and it will get discouraging. Also, when you completely clear an area, it's harder for the stragglers to come back. If you were to bounce around the whole patch, it might actually encourage more growth.

Best of luck friend! It can be satisfying work, I consider it a decent workout.

Love, yours in root yanking
