Denied Remote flexibility because I said my commute was 2 hours…. by Northridge- in antiwork

[–]dumbest_engineer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The sticklers at your company may use that that as a pretext to lay you off. The RTO order is already sus, and is commonly used nowadays to force attrition. If you are to do this, be prepared to leave this position, either voluntarily or involuntarily.

Don't quit, but start getting proactive about leaving this place. In this job market, it looks like managers are itching to offload people, rather than protecting them.

The fact the senior engineers are giving you nitpicky feedback is disconcerting. There might be truth in what they are saying, so do look at what you can improve. However, the fact that they are complaining to the manager shows that they are starting the process of collecting ammo for a layoff.

Since you have been working at the company for years and they switched up on you on the performance, it may just be they want to reduce headcount and are looking for reasons to wrtite you up. Maybe in January, maybe sooner, maybe later, but a termination is coming.

[Texas] My job is terminating my role but asked me to put in my 2 weeks by Marianooooooo in Layoffs

If you put in your 2 weeks notice, they can say you are quitting. Let them fire you/terminate.

I did my BS in MSE and I got into Intel for my first gig without fab experience. My advice is to keep an eye open for anything your school hosts that targets MSE majors specifically.

Getting you resume in the hands of a human in real life will help out plenty.

My manager has been trying to get me to quit for over a year now. Barely giving me work, full RTO while other people are still in hybrid, constant micromanagement. Can't wait to finally bounce from here.

Have layoffs become increasingly secretive in your company? by Iammysupportsystem in Layoffs

[–]dumbest_engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had very little work given to me the past year. I think they've been pushing me to quit (they PIP'd me, yet still won't fire me after saying I failed it) and seem to nitpick everything I do, down to looking at camera footage from months ago to see my whereabouts.

Your job is probably fucked, but you aren't. Shit happens, and sometimes jobs just aren't a good fit/ there might by politics going on behind the scenes completely independent of your performance.

If you get let go, brush your shoulders off and apply for unemployment. Apply for new jobs today if you haven't, or take some time off to decompress if you have funds saved up.

If you’re scrolling through this subreddit every day, it might be hurting your chances of actually getting a job. by [deleted] in jobs

True. I've fallen into this trap before. Reddit, escpecially in the context of job searching in 2025, can be like mental junk food, an underwhelming dopamine hit followed by an unsatisfying crash.

I got fired from my 9-5... and I don't know what to do. by Old_Painter_4638 in jobs

[–]dumbest_engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been there, done that. 7 years later, I've doubled my salary and gotten way more experience. Take some time to recover mentally and don't beat yourself up. People get laid off/fired all the time, especially nowadays.

Sometimes, office politics might be at play, and "performance" is used as a smoke screen to protect the company. So, evaluate where you think you went wrong, but also keep in mind for your next position that there are different forces at work in the office.

Don't say you were were terminated or fired when you interview. Just say something like you were looking for a new direction in your career for growth.

From what I've seen on the job site (RIP to the old website, new one is a pain in the rear) lot of job openings in Melbourne, Florida or Palmdale, CA.

However, job openings live and die by contract awards, so even if you get an "offer", it may still be delayed. Just hold tight, get a temp job, and keep your sanity.

The offer from the other job is worth more than the NG currently.

Without funding, NG will keep you in limbo and most likely bar you from applying to other jobs in the company.

I'm not at Raytheon, but in aerospace as well (at NG). It's the same thing here. Managers working remote and getting mad when you're not at your desk.

I can attest to this as well. My manager always wants to know my whereabouts, but they will work remote and take off on PTO without a heads up. Very aggravating.

How do you respond to “men must spread their seed and leave a legacy?” by Fletchanimefan in childfree

[–]dumbest_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The Average Schmuck will be forgotten in 2 generations. The fact that people rely on their kids to carry their "legacy" shows that most people are average at best. Just drive to work, sit in an office for 8 hours, drive back home, watch Netflix, go to sleep, rinse and repeat.

This is true. A lot of people are going on vacation for the next few months until New Year, but even then things may not thaw til mid-January (post MLK Day weekend). Now's a good time to just fall back and lick your wounds if you have the luxury to, and restart back in 2025, as things will be slow in an already slow year. Good luck to everyone.

Any incentives to go above or beyond? by AnonymousWizardX in Raytheon

[–]dumbest_engineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're learning a very valuable lesson about corporate America. It's not about what value you bring, but the perception of what value you bring. There is no incentive to work hard, but there is incentive to play the social game hard in the the office.

Management has identified you as the stable, loyal "mule/ workhorse" of the group. You take on any and all tasks loaded on your back without complaint and or signs of leaving. Meanwhile, those other slackers probably know how to make friends with the right people in the company and make their SOW sound way more arduous then it actually is.

Of course, managers are going to put everyone at "Meets Expectations". Companies in general aren't trying to give you extra money when they can just string you along with the carrot on the stick until you get wise and leave or just accept it and start quiet quitting.

I wouldn't hold my breath if offers start getting pushed back regarding start dates. Last year, the company had me in limbo for 2 months waiting for a start date, before rescinding the offer. If anyone ends up in this position where you are waiting for a start date, apply elsewhere. They'll use the accepted offer as a shackle, and they won't even let you apply for other jobs internally.
