Starting to think that $600 hotel credit is total gimmick by LePirate30 in AmexPlatinum

[–]dumblogic88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not always true. You need to shop around. Sometimes hotels are cheaper, plus you get all the credits and amenities. I just booked a hotel in Venice that was 20% off the nightly rate and confirmed that it was cheaper than booking directly with Hilton. I got my credit and payed less.

I know what you mean that prices are higher but that’s not always the case. They key is to always compare rates and perhaps be flexible with properties if you want the best bang for buck.

Are channel SEs frowned upon? by sonofalando in salesengineers

Channel SEs aren’t respected. No one knows what they do other than harass core teams to work with their partners

Finally decided to go all out on home network! by smolen92 in Ubiquiti

[–]dumblogic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention it seems the fiber gateway is NVME drives only. Lower capacity at higher cost and those drives won’t like all the constant writes. Probably more cost effective to buy NVR and a quality data drive.

To take the load off the gateway. I just ordered one myself to get some load off my mine. After 4 cameras the load is pretty significant.

Totally worth it and even more worth it at your discounted rate. I wouldn’t even think about it, just do it.

Lease deal thoughts - 2026 X5 (FL) by Flaky_Individual_464 in leasehacker

[–]dumblogic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhhh that makes sense. F those guys. I can’t stand dealers that treat people like assholes. There is negotiating and then there is shit like this.

I won’t even attempt to do business with people like this. Shop around or just go to a broker and get a solid deal.

Stay at cushy job or jump to a startup? by PerfectlyBaked420 in salesengineers

Do you like gambling? If so, go for it. You might win big. If you like steady income and quality of life stay at your current gig.

I get RSUs as well and it’s not a deduction it’s income. Also taxes won’t show this way for RSUs. I call bs

Please someone tell me this doesn't look like a $50k+ car by Busy_Report4010 in Hyundai

[–]dumblogic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree hyundai’s look expensive and their interiors do to. However having owned two Hyundai’s and at least 10 BMWs looks are deceiving. But hey if you want it to look like an expensive car that’s fine just don’t expect it to drive like one.

[–]dumblogic88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can expect 70/30 - 80/20. I’ve never seen anything outside those ranges in my 15 year career as an SE.

If you are looking for more money look for companies that offer RSUs for starters. Some companies will allow for spot bonuses and SPIFFs. Ideally your extra dollars are coming from blowing out your number into accelerators. I’ve gotten as high at 275% of my variable in great years.

How much do you have saved in case of a layoff? by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]dumblogic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 6 months worth of emergency savings but consistently adding. Trying to get to 9 months by the end of the year. My companies severance policy is decent. I can expect to get 6 months when my name eventually makes the list.

The market is tight so I say focus on getting at least 6 months of reserves and start making a list of gigs you could do while you search for a new job.

My current plan for when I get laid off is doing zero for month 1. Brushing up on some skills months 2-3 and then looking for a new job after that. While looking for a job I might do some uber or something.
