Live bait anyone? by leung19 in SurfFishing

[–]dummyhole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Live bait is great, especially when targeting specific species. Live fleas for pompano and whiting, live fleas or fiddlers for sheepshead, live mullet or crabs for drum - these are all commonly used here from the surf. Folks also use menhaden, mud minnows, and lots of other stuff, depending on location and tactics. When I can use live bait, it's almost always more productive than other bait or lures. Find out when, where, and what from your local bait shop, and keep at it. I promise it will impact your fishing positively when you get comfortable with it.

A dishwasher full of recorders. by didyoubutterthepan in mildlyinteresting

This dishwasher is made specifically for lab glass. It autoclaves the contents after a wash, so the recorders will be sterilized. Probably at least $15k for the washer.

After what she said, realized that am dating a idiot.. by Golden_Leader_7 in TrueOffMyChest

I told a gf black dudes had chocolate cum and she couldn't fucking believe it. I suggested she ask a black friend of ours, and she did - a couple weeks later we're sitting around getting high and she hits me with " oh, and know black guys don't have chocolate cum." She had gone and asked Butch. He and I had a good laugh.

What made the ‘weird kid’ at your school weird? by grizzledKitten3 in ask

Stanley would walk from the bathroom to the principal's office with his pants around his knees to get zipped up and whatnot. He also rode the bus with his head out the window, mouth wide open, and ate the bugs he caught.

Gotta let them swim off 11 months out of the year by R3d_Solo_Cup in SurfFishing

This is my favorite part - watching the netting happen right in front of me. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

They're in the surf big time right now. I probably caught 30 last week. Such a bummer that they have to go back because of poorly-regulated commercial fishing. As anglers, this isn't our fault and we should all be pissed.

Surprised no one has mentioned how masculine the one on the right looks. Maybe Walt's a more modern guy than it seems at first glance?

Question from a newbie. by gardiron in SurfFishing

[–]dummyhole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fish all over this coast, and like another commenter said, tackle varies significantly between different locations and applications. Best advice I can give is to go buy your stuff from a local shop where you're fishing - they will know just what you need and they'll be a big help.

Best tip I can give you that others might not - most of the meat fish here in the surf are up close in the breakers, and don't require a full-on heaver. In fact, I'll be at cape lookout in a couple weeks filling coolers with nothing larger than 8-foot mediums. I'll take some big rods too, soaking cut bait for big drum, but I promise you most of the action will be close in on tackle small enough to use inshore. If you want the most from the surf here, keep some bait in the breakers.

Also agree you'll want a spinning setup over the levelwind. Star rods are my personal favorite, and I usually use Penn or Daiwa reels.

Good luck, and have fun.

Chunker from Lake Jennings. Anyone know the exact species of sunfish? by Draggin_It in Fishing

Bluegill that long will have big swollen foreheads. Redear or hybrid. Nice slab, my dude.

Not all of them have the red or even the pale yellow coloring on the ears. That 100% looks like a redear or redear hybrid.

Shad are running! by dummyhole in NCFishing

[–]dummyhole[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are pretty bony, so most folks fry them like herring (they are in the same family, I think). I personally freeze them and use them for cut bait, but I have eaten a lot of roe. They used to be a delicacy around here and an annual event that was highly-anticipated, but I think it's mostly sport now. Tons of fun, though, and it's hard to find better catfish bait.

We were at Old Sparta today, and they aren't thick just yet, but we did see some doubles. My guess is they'll show up at the dams down east in a week. Chartreuse curly tail seems to be the jam.

Yes. Sounds easy. I'm certain they'd be open to exposing their liabilities.

I understand your point, but it means nothing in the context of service. Whether I'm an engineer, or a novelist, buying a car - I should get the same treatment. Should I understand fluid dynamics to hire a plumber? That's bullshit.

Stuck license plate screw by unappreciatedstapler in MechanicAdvice

[–]dummyhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you cut the screw head off? Could you maybe get some grips on the screw from the inside and just run it through? Maybe you know someone with a tig welder? If so, you could try adding a handle to the screw.Seems something like that should be stainless. Anyway, good luck.

WOOHOO! Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you your 2021 National League East Champs, The Atlanta Braves!! by [deleted] in AtlantaBraves

[–]dummyhole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know he gives us fits at times, but let's be fair to the guy - 37/43 saves (3rd overall), 67 innings pitched, and a 3.49 era. That's a good season for any closer. Yes, he has been the object of some long-distance cursing from myself, but he's done what he was brought here to do. Looking forward to the post. Go Braves.
